Chapter 1709: Chapter 810: More Particular_2
Yang Xing was initially puzzled. Why didn’t this thing even have packaging? Just left lying here like this—could it really be something good?
Fortunately, out of trust for Yan Fei, he took a closer look at the text on it. Luckily, he had some foreign language skills, or else he wouldn’t have understood it at all. Once he understood, he couldn’t help but ask, "Did you..."
"Don’t ask!" Yan Fei said with a laugh. "I was walking down the street, and suddenly saw two items lying on the roadside that nobody wanted, so I picked them up."
"Alright, I won’t ask." Yang Xing burst into laughter. "Give me a moment. These two instruments can’t just be left in this little storeroom. Let me call Elder Su and see which lab he wants to place them in."
Yan Fei watched as he finished the call, secretly wiping off a cold sweat.
Thank goodness he had prepared for this trip and brought these things over—otherwise, today’s face-saving opportunity would’ve been totally lost.
Even though Yang Xing hadn’t finished speaking earlier, Yan Fei understood—Director Su and the others must’ve felt that, even after putting in funding, they still owed him a bit. So, after realizing he had a lab, they pulled together a few profit-yielding projects for him from their resources...
He already had the materials on hand, so they didn’t need to provide those. But they’d definitely say, "These projects—why don’t you take them? We won’t pursue them ourselves. Whether you turn the results into mature patent sales or start your own production line, you’re bound to make a fortune."
If that’s how they approached it and he had shown up empty-handed, it would’ve made him look less considerate by comparison...
These days, trying to be a meticulous and thoughtful person is no small feat!
Director Su arrived swiftly after the phone call. Before Yang Xing and Yan Fei could exchange more than a couple of sentences, a few older gentlemen came jogging over.
Without waiting to exchange pleasantries, their eyes fell on the instruments. One elder’s face lit up: "This is great! I just happen to need something like this..."
"Mine is where they’re most needed!" Another elder, stiff-faced and clearly stern by nature, interrupted him.
...
"Why are you all so impatient?" Director Su, noticing the others gearing up to join in the tug-of-war, quickly interjected. "These two instruments will first be placed in the shared central lab. Whoever needs them, go use them. Decision’s made. Come on, folks, we’re all in our twilight years—don’t embarrass yourselves in front of the students."
Knowledge doesn’t just change personal destinies; it reshapes the bigger picture. Falling behind invites bullying—these are all familiar truths.
The more you interact with high-level individuals, the clearer your awareness of specific gaps becomes, and the more directed your efforts become. Thus, their response to the sudden arrival of these instruments might’ve been a tad over-the-top.
But really, it wasn’t all that exaggerated. An unexpected surprise is always more exciting than an anticipated one, isn’t it?
Soon, the two experimental instruments were carefully taken away. Yan Fei had no intention of touring the labs—who knows how much classified material might be inside? If he inadvertently saw something, it’d be a nuisance.
"Alright, Comrade Xiao Fei, let’s now talk about your materials." Director Su smiled. "Xiao Yang, have you talked with him yet?"
"Not yet!" Yang Xing replied. "I was just getting started when he suddenly pulled these things out."
"Then I’ll explain!" Director Su said with a grin. "Comrade Xiao Fei, we had a meeting last night and decided there are two projects that would be better entrusted to you. As you know, we prioritize foundational work. For projects that encourage involvement from other regions or enterprises, we aim to promote them as much as possible."
As expected, the two projects Director Su mentioned were both bio-pharmaceutical ones.
Yan Fei had always thought, as long as he managed his cattle well, that was enough. The other ventures, like fertilizer and leather goods, were just add-ons. However, Director Su made very compelling arguments from a professional perspective.
Excelling in one area with a highly specialized and market-leading focus is certainly admirable. But now that you’ve chosen the research path, why not broaden your horizons?
Moreover, Director Su had conducted thorough investigations. He had learned about Yan Fei’s company and knew he had plenty of money, so much so he was troubled by how to spend it. With sufficient funds and a strong desire to pursue research, to Director Su, Yan Fei was the ideal entrepreneur.
The progress of technology thrives on greater participation. Letting more people see the benefits of research and understanding that those working on atomic bombs aren’t necessarily less successful than those selling tea eggs—this is what researchers yearned for.
To draw Yan Fei into research, Director Su even gave him an in-depth talk about Earth-wide affairs, emphasizing the importance of technological leadership—though honestly, Yan Fei already understood all this.
The most straightforward example was Yan Fei’s own car. He could complain all he wanted about the "barbarians," but deep down, even he had to admit: when it came to performance, domestic brands still lagged behind.
This gap would undoubtedly narrow over time, but in the short run, foreign brands would continue to hold a significant market share.
In any case, Director Su ultimately persuaded Yan Fei. From the national interest to civilian welfare, the way he put it left Yan Fei with no rebuttals—it seemed like not investing in research was an outright waste of resources.
Upon reflection, not pursuing research really would be wasteful. His business was growing rapidly with high enough margins. No exaggeration—his monthly profits alone could fund the next expansion step. If the money sat idle for over a month, it would essentially stay unused!
And Boss Yan was already numb to the piling numbers in his accounts.
Now with money, viable research projects, and all stars aligning, all it took was a single decision from him to get things moving.
When Yan Fei agreed, Director Su immediately said, "Don’t worry. As for the materials I promised you, I’ll delete them shortly. Go back, start your research freely, and I’ll personally guarantee that if you achieve results, I’ll handle all the patent applications..."
Hearing this, Yan Fei couldn’t help but feel a little embarrassed. "Alright then, I’ll head back and start the project right away—recruit talent, purchase instruments, and aim to produce results as soon as possible."
"There’s no rush. Wait a moment," Director Su stopped him. "Now that you’ve donated the instruments, we ought to have some form of ceremony. Being a hero without leaving your name is something you can’t keep doing repeatedly. This is a great deed—don’t skip off anonymously again!"
Yan Fei felt a bit awkward. Could he tell them he’d already arranged for someone to ’interview’ him after he left?
In the end, seeing as Yan Fei insisted on leaving, Director Su relented. "Alright then, at least let’s take a group photo. People ought to know where these things came from, don’t you think?"
That he could do. Taking a photo was no problem!
When Director Su tried convincing him to stay for lunch, he truly couldn’t hang around any longer. To him, the items he delivered were still just ’picked up’ for free somewhere. Gaining favor by gifting found items was one thing, but imposing for extended hospitality made him uncomfortable.
Finally driving out of the institute gate, Yan Fei let out a breath of relief.
Not bad—this mission wrapped up quite nicely.
This might even serve as a decent explanation for Ren Fei, alias Li Quanming, and others. Why did it seem off on the road for a teacher and student duo to be so enthusiastic? Well, simply because we brought back such good stuff!
Meng Si’an, that guy, hadn’t even given Yan Fei a heads-up before proceeding. Even as Yan Fei headed for the highway, he wondered how Meng Si’an would handle this affair. In fact, by that time, a journalist from a newspaper had arrived, opening with questions about Yang Xing, intending to compose an article on fossils...
Don’t forget, the fossils being repatriated was significant and had already been publicized several times. Why not once more, right?
While the interview was underway and before the journalist even deployed their preset angle, Yang Xing couldn’t help but jump in. After all, Yan Fei had made big contributions but kept remaining a nameless hero. Now with the instrument donation, could he not speak up?
And so, naturally, the conversation shifted from fossils to the entrepreneur Yan Fei...
