Chapter 1706: Chapter 809: Yan Fei’s Losing Business

Yang Xing rarely got the chance to ’educate’ Yan Fei and seized the moment, casually lecturing about ’big principles’ while flipping through the materials, leaving Yan Fei with no room to interject—"At least now I don’t have to listen to this guy showing off his wealth!"

Showing off wealth is the most annoying thing!

Even worse, the person showing off is younger than most of the students he typically supervises, and happens to own not just one but two labs!

Luckily, footsteps from outside finally rescued Yan Fei from being ’educated.’

An elderly man with a head full of white hair walked in, laughing heartily as he entered: "Xiao Yang, what have you discovered? Hmm? And who might this be?"

Yang Xing quickly stood up and introduced: "Director Su, this is Yan Fei. You can call him Xiao Fei. He’s the one who offered $25,000 last time for my fossil..."

Director Su immediately grabbed Yan Fei’s hand: "Comrade Xiao Fei—so talented at such a young age! To be honest, we haven’t properly expressed our gratitude for your contribution. Rest assured, we’re working on this matter, and we’ll find a way to compensate you for the money you’ve put forth."

"Director Su, you flatter me, truly!" Yan Fei said modestly, insisting on remaining humble. After all, compared to such a venerable elder, his own contribution felt trivial.

Yang Xing, worried about them wasting too much time on pleasantries, chimed in beside them: "Here’s the thing, Director Su—Xiao Fei came across some materials by chance, and he wants us to take a look to see if they’re needed. I think the data could be quite valuable..."

"Let me have a look," Director Su said with a cheerful nod.

"Take a seat, Director Su," Yang Xing said courteously.

"No need for formalities. You two sit as well—sit," Director Su gestured for the others and sat down at the computer without hesitation.

After glancing at the screen for a moment: "This is about anti-cancer drug development?"

"Yes, but this is only a portion of it," Yang Xing explained. "Minimize this document; there’s more inside. There’s quite a lot of information, so take your time..."

"Alright!" Director Su agreed and followed Yang Xing’s instructions to minimize the document on the desktop. He was startled: "There’s so much material?"

"Uh-huh..."

Professor Carter’s primary research wasn’t fossils—that was more of a hobby, albeit one he pursued deeply. His main focus was life sciences, as the specialized area that secured financial backing for his lab. Fossil research, being unlikely to yield immediate profits, probably could only attract funding from eccentric dinosaur enthusiasts who had more disposable income than they knew what to do with.

In America, there were quite a few affluent individuals who were keen on investing in research. Some were part of interest-specific hobby clubs and organizations. Domestically, however, there weren’t yet as many wealthy individuals, and cultural trends hadn’t developed enough to encourage scientific investment, so such funding remained sporadic.

Initially, Director Su appeared somewhat indifferent. Although he didn’t show it outwardly, he seemed skeptical that the sheer volume of materials held much value—after all, scarcity often determines worth. Excess can often equate to diminished significance.

But as he delved deeper, his expression grew increasingly serious. By the time he reached sections touching on his own areas of expertise, he seemed so engrossed that he forgot there were others in the room.

Finally, the grumbling of Yang Xing’s stomach broke the spell, prompting him to remind Director Su: "Director Su, shall we go grab some food? If we wait any longer, there won’t be anything left at the cafeteria."

"Huh? Lunch?" Director Su hadn’t snapped back to reality yet. "Why don’t you all go grab lunch? Let me finish reviewing this part before coming..."

"Director Su!" Yang Xing emphasized with extra weight in his tone. "I think you really need to grab a bite—it’s already past noon. This material was brought in by Xiao Fei, and he’s intending to sell it to us."

The implication was clear: it wasn’t theirs yet, and watching it endlessly wouldn’t change that. In any case, Yang Xing knew the elder wouldn’t have perfect recall after just a glance, especially with the amount of material presented.

Yet, Director Su remained unfazed, his instincts as a lifelong researcher making it difficult for him to disengage. Though he had transitioned into administrative responsibilities, the enthusiasm for discovery was deeply ingrained in him, nearly impossible to resist.

Still not fully cognizant of their situation, Director Su said: "Well, why don’t you first take our guest to eat? I’ll watch over the material here. Leaving it lying around isn’t ideal..."

Yang Xing was torn between laughter and exasperation: "But you need to eat too! Xiao Fei, perhaps you could spare the trouble of taking out the hard drive to carry it back with you?"

At the mention of disassembling the hard drive, Director Su finally snapped out of it and sheepishly relented: "Fine—let’s go eat. Xiao Fei, my sincerest gratitude for your trouble."

Yan Fei sighed inwardly, expressing that he didn’t feel troubled at all. As someone outside their world, he had become quite immune to such situations.

Anyone pursuing real research must possess an almost obsessive dedication—or else they wouldn’t be genuine scholars. In truth, across professions, those who achieve meaningful results often exhibit a mix of obsession and foolish persistence.

For Yan Fei, his remaining task was to quietly disassemble the hard drive, stash it in his backpack, and follow the others to the cafeteria, where he ate leftovers—at this hour, most people had already eaten, and the cafeteria was filled with people wearing expressions of distraction, clearly immersed in their work even while grabbing a bite.

During the meal, Director Su finally regained full awareness and asked Yan Fei: "So regarding this data—what’s your plan?"

"If it turns out that you need it, I’ll sell it to you. If not, I’ll take it elsewhere," Yan Fei replied matter-of-factly.
