Chapter 1686: Chapter 799: Finally Coming Over_2

The technological gap is truly frustrating. Even if you know exactly how something works, without the right equipment, proving it might take ten to a hundred times the effort—it’s almost like using a 20-centimeter ruler to measure the length of a train, while someone else uses a laser rangefinder and gets the result simply by pointing it from the train’s head to tail.

Fortunately, for Boss Yan, things like advanced equipment have never been much of a problem for him. Plus, many of the materials here are temporarily of little use to him.

By around 11:00 PM, Professor Carter and Professor Hans finally wrapped up their work for the day. Originally, Carter intended to arrange for them to stay in the laboratory dormitory, but Professor Hans insisted he needed to go back, as he had some tasks at school to handle in the morning before coming over again.

Likewise, Yan Fei wasn’t too keen on staying there either. Sure, the lab was top-notch, but how good could the dormitories be?

Once the trio got into the car, Professor Hans began rubbing his temples, clearly exhausted from the afternoon’s work. Seated in the driver’s seat, Hans started the car and was just about to say something when he glanced at Yan Fei, who looked full of energy. An idea struck him immediately: "Do you know how to drive?"

"Of course!" Yan Fei nodded.

"Then you drive!" Hans promptly unbuckled his seat belt.

"But I don’t have a driver’s license," Yan Fei replied, pretending to be an exemplary citizen. He conveniently forgot that he’d been driving for years and had only recently gotten a questionable license.

"No problem. There’s no car checks here now anyway," Hans said nonchalantly.

Yan Fei didn’t hesitate—he got behind the wheel and drove off.

Things went smoothly on the road at first, but just as they were nearing the university town, flashing lights appeared ahead. Several police cars were blocking the road—after last night’s big incident, security personnel were out in full force tonight.

Quick-witted, Yan Fei immediately pulled the car over to the roadside. Surprisingly, Hans handled it like a pro, seamlessly switching seats with Yan Fei. This made Yan Fei suspicious—was this old man often involved in sketchy activities? He seemed awfully experienced!

Back at the hotel, Yang Xing didn’t have the energy to chat much with Yan Fei. He simply told him to rest early before heading into his own room.

Yan Fei closed the door, entered his room, and directly traveled to the dinosaur world.

He then went to the laboratory, turned on a computer, and began furiously typing away. He needed to document everything he had gathered over the past half-day, intending to send it back to Yang Xing once he returned to China.

As he thought about having to wait to return to China to hand it over, a feeling of frustration welled up inside Yan Fei—because anything involving slightly advanced technology couldn’t pass through the airport security here, especially the security at airports heading to China.

Despite his frustration, Yan Fei wasn’t planning to do anything drastic. He did consider visiting Anderson, who had pocketed his money, but time was simply too tight. With dawn approaching and Yang Xing unlikely to wake up late, there wasn’t enough time for him to fly over to Anderson’s city and come back.

After typing away at his keyboard non-stop all night, Yan Fei finally lay down on the hotel bed around dawn, resting for just half an hour. Honestly, the hotel expenses felt rather wasteful—he had paid for two nights, yet only slept for half an hour. Luckily, the money had come from questionable means, so it didn’t sting too much to spend it recklessly.

The next day unfolded much like the previous one—Yan Fei continued to ’do nothing’ and act on his own. Meanwhile, the professors and experts painstakingly analyzed and compared every single piece of the fossil. Each fragment could take them half a day to discuss, making it clear the work wouldn’t be finished anytime soon.

The reason, of course, was that the person who had forged the fossil was incredibly skilled. This fossil, originating from Northeast China, had already been proven to be a combination of several different fossils pieced together. So, analyzing each piece required significant time and effort.

Fortunately, that evening, the group didn’t continue their research late into the night.

When they returned to the hotel, Yan Fei felt the moment was right. Transforming into a blackbird, he flew into the night sky.

...

Latvian City.

Anderson sat in his home, feeling incredibly agitated.

The cause of his agitation was simple—he had been trying to contact his nephew and best assistant, Abe Sanders, all day but to no avail.

While Abe occasionally partied wildly, it was rare for him to be missing for an entire day without any news. If he were truly that irresponsible, Anderson wouldn’t have placed so much trust in him.

By the afternoon, Anderson had already asked some friends in the city’s underground to investigate Abe’s whereabouts. However, the information they sent back wasn’t encouraging. Reportedly, the last person seen with Abe was a female technician. This technician claimed that amidst the city’s chaos, Abe had been drinking, shouting, and clutching a bottle. Later, as the crowd jostled, they got separated.

As for where Abe had gone afterwards, she had no idea.

The scene had been too chaotic, with many people carrying weapons, and she soon returned home out of fear for her own safety.

Clearly, the technician was lying—she had actually witnessed Abe’s disappearance.

She had been drinking heavily too, and at first, when Abe suddenly vanished, she thought he was messing around or playing some romantic game with her. But after searching for a while and sobering up a bit, she realized Abe had truly disappeared, and that’s when panic set in.

The situation was utterly terrifying!

Living in a city like this, the female technician understood one crucial truth—if you didn’t want to ’disappear’ one day yourself, you had to learn to stay out of trouble: see nothing you shouldn’t, hear nothing you shouldn’t, and know nothing you shouldn’t.

Clearly, Abe’s disappearance wasn’t something she, a mere technician, should get involved in. Given the chaos of that night, if she revealed she had witnessed Abe’s disappearance, her own future could become dangerously unpredictable!

No one wants their future to be unpredictable, so the technician chose to feign ignorance.

She played her part flawlessly, leveraging her innate talent for acting—a must-have skill in her line of work. When she returned home, she even complained to her roommate, pretending to gripe about how she’d snagged a rich target during the party, only for him to take advantage and bolt without paying up.

Anderson’s contact in the underground was fairly resourceful and quickly dug up the technician’s background. It became apparent that she and Abe had no prior connection—their interaction the night before had been a one-off collaboration, and one with an unfavorable outcome.

Ultimately, Anderson’s contact didn’t link Abe’s disappearance to her.

But with Abe still missing and considering the chaos of that night, the possibility of something bad happening was high. By morning, security forces had returned to clean up, arresting quite a few people who had opposed them during the night. There were violent altercations between enemies, drunken shootings, and even multiple bloody confrontations.

Weighing his options, Anderson picked up his phone again and increased the fee for his investigator, urging faster results in locating Abe.

The empty hall echoed with Anderson’s voice—it was his habit to isolate himself during crises. From servants to family members, all had been sent upstairs.

"Anderson, my friend." His contact seized the opportunity to haggle, likely sensing Anderson’s desperation. "You know I’m doing everything I can, but if you want the entire city searched, including the sewers, it’s going to cost you at least $100,000. That’s already taking our years of friendship into account."

"$100,000 it is," Anderson gritted his teeth and agreed. "I’ll pay $50,000 upfront, and the other half once Abe is found."

The other party hesitated for a moment before agreeing.

After hanging up, Anderson realized he couldn’t sit idle anymore. Just to be safe, he decided to relocate—Abe had handled countless shady dealings for him, and his sudden disappearance wasn’t a good sign.

As Anderson grabbed his coat to leave, an entirely unexpected voice echoed in the room: "You’d spend just $100,000 to find your nephew, yet the promise you made to me cost me $700,000—and twenty cows, no less..."
