Chapter 1684: Chapter 798: Don’t Be Too Nice to Me (Happy Dragon Boat Festival)_2
"Not here, right?" Yan Fei walked over and asked in a low voice.
"Mm, not here." Yang Xing was immersed in anticipation and completely missed the unusual tone in Yan Fei’s voice. "He’s currently at Professor Carter’s lab. Professor Carter, a friend of Professor Hans, has an independent lab off campus sponsored by a company. It’ll be more convenient for us to go there."
...
Professor Hans drove a somewhat feminine yellow compact car himself; he didn’t rely on assistants. He drove Yang Xing and Yan Fei straight off campus.
It seemed close to noon by then. The three ate a quick meal and spent over an hour making their way to Professor Carter’s lab.
What surprised Yan Fei was that Professor Carter turned out to be a Black man. In America, skin color often carries significant weight. Not only had Carter managed to become a professor, but he’d also had a lab built solely for him. This could only mean one thing: he was truly extraordinary.
Perhaps this was why Professor Hans, Yan Fei, Yang Xing, and even Carter’s lab team had no ’objections’ to Yan Fei and Yang Xing’s presence.
Professor Torres and Mrs. Torres arrived together; neither was very old, and both were scientific researchers.
Initially, the two had been quite discriminatory and self-serving. After acquiring the fossil, they didn’t even consider returning it to its country of origin, in accordance with international conventions. Instead, they wanted to study it themselves to gain fame and recognition.
But after a series of setbacks, as the fossil was gradually verified to be a forgery—something created by artifact and fossil dealers purely for profit—Professor Torres was thoroughly worn out...
He actually felt so humiliated that he was on the verge of losing confidence in himself altogether.
A counterfeit fossil might not have been a big deal, but when it became entwined with Earth’s other nations, and Torres found himself cast in a rather unflattering role, even someone as psychologically robust as Torres couldn’t avoid feeling a little disheartened.
For the Torres couple now, they truly didn’t know whether to feel relieved or dejected that the fossil’s issues were discovered before their paper was published.
This case kept implicating more and more people, and its impact grew increasingly widespread. Not only in America but even in Britain, many renowned experts and professors were now in the know.
The wider the impact, the worse it was for the Torres couple.
It could be foreseen that this nearly year-long scientific hoax would ultimately go down in the annals of scientific history. And the two of them would unquestionably be central figures in it. Their disgraceful actions would inevitably be exposed to the entire world.
Anyone who’s done something discreditable would hope as few people as possible know. But now, well, they weren’t just infamous internationally; their notoriety seemed likely to grow even further and perhaps never fade...
It must be said, whether it was bad luck or ironic fortune for the Torres couple, in Yang Xing’s earlier research on a theropod dinosaur specimen, he happened to discover that the tail of the specimen was indeed a primary mold of the tail from the Torres couple’s fossil.
As of then, the matter was settled: the fossil was definitively proven to be fake.
This whole affair certainly had a touch of tragedy.
Thus, at that moment, the Torres couple treated Yan Fei and the others with a lukewarm attitude. It wasn’t intentional; it was purely because of their own emotional state. They truly couldn’t summon the energy, especially since they were facing researchers from the fossil’s place of origin and Yang Xing, the individual who had shattered their last shred of hope. Managing a weak smile was already them trying their best.
Yang Xing didn’t immediately propose returning the fossil but instead collaborated seriously with Hans, Carter, and the Torres couple to observe the fossil and exchanged his research findings with them.
After all, the Torres couple wasn’t foolish. They fully understood Yang Xing’s agenda.
Professor Carter and the others used various instruments to examine the fossil, exchanging ideas constantly. Meanwhile, Yan Fei began observing the private laboratory again. He had to admit, even though it was privately owned and smaller than the labs he’d seen in Japan, it had distinct advantages.
It wasn’t that Yan Fei was intentionally disparaging Japan, but the current lab location had the bragging rights of being in Silicon Valley, a world-renowned research hub tied to a prestigious university. Countless scientists considered this place a haven for academic inquiry... without bona fide credentials, one wouldn’t dare linger here.
With Carter and the others delving deeper into the discussion, Yan Fei started to get confused. He knew the correct results but didn’t necessarily understand the theoretical basis these experts were exploring to arrive at those results.
Yang Xing kept an eye on Yan Fei. Seeing that Yan Fei had been quite ’focused’ earlier and was now getting lost in the theoretical discussion that exceeded his knowledge range, he smiled encouragingly at Yan Fei: "Why don’t you take a break nearby? Or head out for a walk?"
Professor Carter snapped out of the discussion at this point and noticed Yan Fei sitting by. Perhaps indulging too deeply in their discourse earlier, Carter had almost forgotten Yan Fei was there. Slightly startled, he then stood up and greeted Yan Fei warmly, "Young man, let me show you a big toy you’re bound to like. Come over here."
He powered up the massive supercomputer that Yan Fei had already been eyeing, a machine far larger than any regular computer he’d seen before. Carter grinned mischievously at Yan Fei and said, "This is Silicon Valley’s latest creation. I think young people like you will surely find it fascinating. And if it still doesn’t amuse you, the data stored inside it might... You’ll soon discover there’s never enough time."
Due to Carter’s skin color, Yan Fei couldn’t discern his age but figured he was likely around Professor Hans’ age. One thing was certain: this Black professor was undeniably kind. Letting him personally operate the advanced computer and granting access to the data inside—a gesture far beyond mere friendliness.
Take this computer, for instance. Yan Fei could bet that America wasn’t about to sell such technology to China anytime soon. As for the data within, judging by America’s general disposition, there’s likely plenty they wouldn’t want outsiders to see... otherwise Carter wouldn’t have smirked while hinting that Yan Fei might find himself short on time.
It was, in fact, a thoughtful warning.
Perhaps in Professor Carter’s eyes, science was truly borderless.
Yang Xing threw Yan Fei a supportive and encouraging glance, subtly expressing gratitude toward Carter—no need for excessive words. After all, in the eyes of certain strict Americans, Carter’s current behavior would amount to a crime.
Sigh!
Yan Fei sighed heavily internally.
Initially, he’d thought the Torres couple would behave atrociously, but instead, their despair had rendered them impartial to everyone. Professor Carter’s actions further dispelled any resentful notions; Yan Fei felt genuinely helpless.
Not to mention, let’s not forget: it was Professors Hans and Carter who had been persuading the Torres couple to return the fossil from the start—even before it was proven fake.
And so, sitting in front of the supercomputer, Boss Yan could only feel nothing but helplessness. Such an impressive tool, but lacking any excuse to use it, why hadn’t anyone managed to offend him?
Wishing for someone to offend him—this absurd longing for conflict had become Boss Yan’s greatest desire.
Now, all he could do was work hard to memorize the information stored inside, even plenty of content he couldn’t comprehend. With his excellent memory, he figured he’d read and recollect as much as possible, to report back to Yang Xing later and ensure that this visit wasn’t in vain.
After all, without Yang Xing’s involvement, he might never have come here due to Anderson’s meddling, let alone encountered the opportunities he was experiencing now.
"You have treated me with the respect of a statesman; in return, I will treat you with the honor of one."
But why was it that when he needed someone to ’treat me like grass,’ nobody did?
Boss Yan was filled with resentment...
