Chapter 1636: Chapter 779: Getting a Passport, Returning with a Blank Shot

The early morning streets were filled with hurried pedestrians.

Xu Xiaoyan was riding her electric bike, constantly urging from the side, "Yan Xiaofei, can’t you move a bit faster? Everyone else in the lab has already started work. Aren’t you embarrassed?"

"I’m not even late yet!" Yan Fei, pedaling a bicycle, retorted, though he pressed harder with his feet to pick up the pace.

He hadn’t stayed at the accident scene waiting for the ambulance and had rushed back. After returning home, he took out the Mercedes-Benz from a nearby spot and was back in time. Luckily, Xu Xiaoyan, having stayed up too late, was still asleep. Seeing this after a busy night, Yan Fei dove right into the bed covers.

Young men and women always have their little moments—anyone who’s been through it would understand. They clung to each other, reluctant to leave the warmth of the bed. After dawdling around, Yan Fei received a call at the lab, informing him that Boss White had been arrested.

Though he was in custody, thanks to that miraculous "Crow," whether Boss White could pull through was still uncertain. It was even less clear why he had someone attack that lab staffer without reason. Seriously, those two were lucky—this car accident was severe enough to nearly reduce the vehicle to scrap, yet neither sustained major injuries. If the ambulance hadn’t been so late, they really might’ve gotten away unscathed.

After wrapping up the call, Xu Xiaoyan had already dressed and was urging him to get up. He dawdled a bit longer, which led to them having no time for breakfast. Xu Xiaoyan hurriedly pushed him out the door toward school.

As for Yan Fei, he was such a special case that the school could only turn a blind eye. Ever since the laboratory was established, he’d completely forgotten his grand "determination to study hard" from the beginning of the school year. Nowadays, he showed up at school sporadically, attending a day or half-day of classes before heading off to ask Lu Bin for leave.

Lu Bin had long grown numb to it and couldn’t even remember how many times Yan Fei had asked for leave. Now, whenever Yan Fei wasn’t around, Lu Bin simply assumed he’d already been excused. Nobody made a fuss about it anyway, since everyone at the school knew about Yan Fei’s lab. Many young teachers even wanted to curry favor and get into his lab for some experience—who had time to care whether he attended class?

Thankfully, he had Xu Xiaoyan around.

That girl was to Yan Fei what the golden headband was to Sun Wukong. While it didn’t seem to make much difference on normal days, at critical moments, tightening the band a bit always got him to rein it in.

When they reached the intersection where they had to part ways, the girl reminded him again, "Go to at least two classes before leaving. Remember to ask for leave. When you get back, make sure to check on Xiaochao and... Aunt Xuimei."

If she weren’t running late, the girl might’ve kept nagging.

Once she left, Yan Fei pulled out his phone and made a call: "Hello, Director Niu, I need to head back this afternoon to process an overseas passport. Are you free later? I was hoping you could help with a rush application."

Originally, university students transferred their household registrations, but Boss Yan thought it was too much trouble. As a result, his initial laziness now meant he had to go back for the passport process.

"Boss Yan, you’re too polite. With our relationship, is there even a need to talk about favors?" Director Niu responded courteously. "I’ll call them right away to make preparations. When you come this afternoon, we can handle it together. It should only take two or three days to process. Right, I’ll have someone give you a call shortly to let you know what documents you’ll need to prepare."

"Great, I won’t hold back then. You’re probably busy this morning, so I won’t keep you. Let’s talk when I’m there," Yan Fei said, hanging up the phone.

Before long, someone indeed called, explaining in detail which documents were needed for the passport. Yan Fei had done this before when traveling to Shen City and Hong Kong, so it was all pretty much the same.

People do change—now even Yan Fei knew how to utilize others. If you never give others a shot at helping, isn’t that a bit overboard? Without some back-and-forth, how would relationships grow?

Once at school, Yan Fei packed up his things after the second class. Hu Yidao saw this and sneered, "Taking leave again?"

Yan Fei chuckled, "This time, it’s legit. I need to process a passport to go abroad. Jealous?"

Hu Yidao sneered instead of showing any envy. "Nouveau riche, too much money must be burning a hole in your pocket. Go, go! Just don’t get charmed by some blonde foreign woman and fail to come back..."

Before Yan Fei could respond, Huang Xuan in the front turned her head abruptly. "Where are you going? What foreign women?"

"To America!" Yan Fei beamed. "I’m heading to a capitalist country to experience their decadence firsthand so I can report back about how good it is here."

"Really? Must be nice to have money!" The little girl’s eyes lit up like stars. "Can you smuggle someone along?"

"Sure!" Yan Fei grinned mischievously. "But boys only—girls are out. My wife’s not going, so if I bring you, I’ll be in trouble!"

"Hmph, putting romance before friendships!" Huang Xuan rolled her eyes dramatically.

"And Western-influenced to boot!" Hu Yidao added dryly.

"Don’t worry, I’ll bring you guys back some gifts," Yan Fei laughed, slinging his bag over his shoulder and heading off to request leave again.

As Yan Fei’s identity gradually came to light, fewer people at school dared joke with him so freely. These two—one blunt and the other carefree—were among the few who still treated him like a normal classmate, making his trips to school feel a bit less isolating.

At Lu Bin’s office, after Yan Fei explained the situation, Lu Bin casually waved him off with his usual response: "You do your thing. If anything comes up at school, I’ll let you know."
