Chapter 1632: Chapter 777: Everyone Wants to Curse
Along the National Highway leading from the Provincial City to Xu City, inside a car repair shop, Boss White was watching Old Lang test a car.
The two had just left the Provincial City and hadn’t gone far when Boss White made another call to his younger brother. Bai Jianming advised him that driving his own car while on the run was risky; it’d be better to switch vehicles. Boss White owned a repair shop and decided to head over to hide his own car there. He picked out a beat-up van not registered in his name to use as a getaway vehicle.
The van was in rough shape. Boss White, who normally ran legitimate businesses, hadn’t foreseen his sudden turn into a fugitive and was entirely unprepared. Watching Old Lang test the broken-down van now, he felt impatient but knew he had no other choice.
Next to Boss White stood a young lad, rubbing sleep from his eyes while speaking: "Uncle Ren, don’t worry! My van, though shabby, runs like a dream. I repair cars for a living—how could I let it have problems? I made all the replacements that could be swapped. See those tires? I just pulled them off another car. Plus, everything inside is sorted—drive it all you want. If anything goes wrong, go ahead and hit me; I won’t argue about it..."
"Alright." Seeing Old Lang nod from the driver’s seat, Boss White nodded at the lad as well. "Make sure my car stays hidden; don’t let anyone see it. If anyone comes asking about me, just act clueless. And another thing..."
"Got it, Uncle Ren, no problem!" The lad replied carelessly. "I know what’s important and what’s not; you go worry-free!"
"..." Boss White, hearing this, felt something was off. He wanted to say more but, seeing the sleepy look on the lad’s face, decided it wasn’t worth it and dropped it.
He climbed into the van and motioned for Old Lang to drive. As the van reached the repair shop’s entrance, Boss White leaned out the window and tossed out two wads of cash. "Seven Jin, if I don’t call, don’t reach out to me. Use this money for now; if you run out, go find your Second Uncle."
The lad ran over. "No problem, Uncle Ren. I make money every day anyway!"
Before he could finish talking, the van had already turned onto the highway and vanished. The lad picked up the two wads of cash reluctantly, slapped them against his palm, and muttered, "Seriously? Still not trusting me? Giving me money? What’d I even do wrong if not? Damn shame, though—I’d just gotten my GEELY fixed up, and now I’ve no idea when I’ll see it again..."
Muttering to himself, he headed inside to resume his nap.
The repair shop returned to silence. Naturally, no one noticed the small black bird perched on the wooden pole holding the shop’s signage and lightbulb at the entrance. It flapped its wings and leisurely flew off in the van’s direction.
The road from Xu City to the Provincial City was a major transit route. This area, being suburban, frequently hosted large trucks traveling at night and had diners and motels scattered along the way. But the small black bird followed the van tirelessly from above, hovering low and waiting for a chance to land on it. It planned to listen in on the two men onboard to see if they revealed anything useful.
Yan Fei hadn’t driven home just now. Instead, he turned into a small alley halfway back, parked his car in Dinosaur World, and transformed into a small black bird before taking to the skies.
The Provincial City wasn’t small, situated as a key transportation hub in central China, with lots of vehicles and countless roads crisscrossing it. For law enforcement, blockading every possible route to search for one vehicle was no easy feat. Manpower had its limits; screening cars one by one deep into the night was far from simple.
For someone like Boss White, switching to an unregistered van, putting on a disguise, and using an ID resembling his appearance could very well let him slip through undetected.
But for the small black bird, with wings capable of speeds close to a thousand kilometers per hour, the Provincial City seemed minuscule. It wasn’t long before Yan Fei located his target.
Boss White remained clueless about being tracked and felt remarkably at ease. He and Old Lang had left the Provincial City before the lockdown was fully in place. Now, with the vehicle swap done, he had little reason for concern.
While he wasn’t overly worried, Boss White still urged Old Lang, "Old Lang, drive faster. We need to settle down before dawn. If Xu City gets wind of this after dawn, it’ll be inconvenient to move around during the day."
The strength of the Provincial City lay in its authority. Even within the same organization, requests for assistance originating from the Provincial City carried more weight and urgency compared to those from smaller cities and towns.
Old Lang gave a subtle nod and pressed the accelerator harder.
The mini-van was indeed well-maintained; it was now cruising at speeds close to 90 or even 100 kilometers per hour. Though it had the typical wobbliness of most vans, everything else was in fine working order. At least, it produced no odd noises—a detail any driver would recognize immediately.
As they drove farther, the road grew emptier. Boss White pulled out a pack of cigarettes from his pocket, but after rummaging around for a while, came up empty-handed. He turned to Old Lang and asked, "Got a lighter?"
Old Lang reached out and switched on the cabin light. "I saw one next to the gear stick earlier. Take a look."
Boss White glanced down, then chuckled and cursed, "That bastard Seven Jin—smoking better stuff than me..."
He grabbed the lighter beside the cigarettes and lit one up, taking a satisfying drag before offering a smoke to Old Lang. "Want one?"
Old Lang eased off the accelerator just a little, reached for Seven Jin’s pack of cigarettes by the gear stick, and expertly slid a few out. He put the longest one in his mouth and lit it with the same lighter. "Brother Ren, buckle up your seatbelt. The road’s empty now. Let’s push the pace soon."
