Chapter 1631: Chapter 776 Capture_2
"Brother Ren, something’s happened..." Boss White was listening when the door was suddenly pushed open. A lackey rushed in, flustered, and spoke hurriedly to him.
"Can’t you see I’m on the phone? Wait a bit for whatever it is." Boss White snapped, irritated, before turning back to his call. "Laoer, keep going..."
"No, hold on. What did that guy just tell you? You’d better listen." Bai Jianming, hearing the commotion on his brother’s end over the phone, hesitated. In the middle of the night, someone rushing in like this might very well have info connected to the discussion they were having.
Boss White, though rash by nature, listened earnestly when it came to his younger brother. He immediately enabled speakerphone and directed his attention to the middle-aged man who had entered. "Go ahead, tell me what’s going on."
"Boss, I just got word." The middle-aged man, previously cut off mid-sentence, wasted no time now that he’d been granted permission to speak. "Stick’s and Machete’s place got wrecked just now. Roof’s been caved in—word is it was likely that Yan guy who hired folks for the job. Should we do something about it?"
Boss White felt a headache forming. Damn it, why is that Yan Fei kid so damn stubborn? Beating up one of his guys—okay, fine. Snatching his man and shaking him down for cash—also fine. But resorting to this kind of heavy-handed dirty tactic? Is he trying to break up everything or what?
If that’s how he plays his game, then the guy’s pretty scary to tick off!
"Bro, bro!" Bai Jianming’s voice sounded through the phone. Boss White refocused. "Laoer, you heard just now, didn’t you? That Yan guy plays dirty, doesn’t even spare families. Got his people to wreck homes..."
"Forget those rules for now; can you change locations and call me back later?" Bai Jianming was exasperated with his brother. "You talking about playing by the rules? You sound like a saint—so why don’t you go take care of Yan yourself? Isn’t it ’cause you know he’s a well-known entrepreneur in the province, and directly going after him might spell big trouble? But sure, keep whining about him breaking rules."
Though frustrated, Bai Jianming felt some relief—at least his brother hadn’t fallen into pure idiocy and sent people to actually attack Yan in person. Otherwise, the consequences would be unimaginable.
As someone entrenched in the system, Bai Jianming always had access to good intel. Recently, the province’s largest cattle-export operation had made waves. He knew what that meant—small beginnings, but large-scale future potential. The higher-ups were all-for export initiatives, and that much was crystal clear.
If Yan Fei himself were harmed in an attack, significant figures on a provincial level might intervene. Serious repercussions wouldn’t just be likely; even struggling to recover from them might become impossible for the duo of brothers.
Boss White, taking Bai Jianming’s words to heart, hung up without hesitation and quickly turned to the middle-aged man in front of him. "Old Lang, start the car. I’ll pack some stuff; we’re heading out to lay low for a while."
The man addressed as Old Lang didn’t waste a second, promptly heading for the exit.
Boss White quickly threw together a few items, but he paused briefly after retrieving a black, metallic object from a small corner in the room. Without hesitation, he decided against carrying it, stuffing it back where he’d found it. He grabbed a few stacks of cash instead, shoved them into a bag, and left the house.
The two men didn’t get far before hitting a crossroads. Old Lang, sharp-eyed, immediately sensed something amiss and veered the car down a different direction.
Before Boss White could speak, Old Lang warned, "Brother Ren, stay alert—cops."
Just as these words were spoken, Boss White glanced back and spotted a string of police cars silently streaming past the earlier intersection, heading directly for his home.
"When did the cops start being so subdued? No sirens blaring, no lights flashing?" Though tense, Boss White tried to joke about his stroke of luck—barely managing to slip away unnoticed.
"Looks like that Yan guy really plans to go all-in," Old Lang murmured. "Where to?"
"We’ll chill in Xu City for starters, scope things out. If things blow up too much, we’ll head out of the province—hit the south, take it easy for a while. Country’s big enough; there’s gotta be places for us." Boss White mused.
"Alright!" Old Lang responded and kept driving.
The police had reached their destination and began implementing their pre-arranged plan, surrounding Boss White’s residence. Lead officers swiftly breached the courtyard and charged upstairs.
Within minutes, Yan Fei, still outside monitoring, received updates:
"Captain, nobody on the ground floor."
"Nobody in the upstairs bedroom."
"Bathroom, kitchen—clear."
...
"Report: Search complete. No one found, but judging by signs at the scene, they must have left shortly before we got here."
The captain barely had time to respond before Yan Fei interjected, "On our way here, I saw a car making a quick turn at the previous intersection. Could that have been them?"
"Get back in the cars and chase it down!" The captain immediately issued orders. "Pack it up. Liu, you and your team, move quickly to the intersection and chase that car!"
Deploying this many officers without catching even a shadow would be embarrassing. What had seemed an easy operation unexpectedly hit this snag, and with Yan Fei’s suggestion, they had no choice but to follow up.
Every hint counts in police work.
Yan Fei didn’t wait for a second longer, darting toward his car. "I’ll drive ahead myself!"
While the officers were piling into their vehicles, Yan Fei’s car streaked away, roaring ahead.
Compared to police cars, his vehicle moved like a lightning bolt. Being a ride worth upwards of a million, it clearly justified its high price tag.
Zooming toward the suspected direction, Yan Fei grew increasingly annoyed. He shouldn’t have allowed himself to get distracted earlier. Had he paid closer attention, he might’ve caught more details—perhaps even overheard something instead of only spotting the escaping car.
Arriving at the intersection, Yan Fei took the turn and continued pursuit in the direction the previous vehicle had vanished toward.
Yet, not far from there, he was forced to stop at another crossroads. Frustration welled up as Yan Fei took in the surroundings—emptiness in all directions, sporadic vehicles passing by, none resembling the one they’d spotted moments ago.
Even with sharp senses, there was nothing he could do now.
As the trailing police cars arrived, he stood at the intersection, waiting.
The captain, seeing Yan Fei from afar, stopped his car and hurried over. "Boss Yan, don’t worry. I’ve already contacted the traffic department—they’ll check the records for Bai Jianren’s car. We’ll hear back soon."
"Thanks for your hard work," Yan Fei said sincerely.
"It’s no trouble—in fact, it’s our oversight losing track of them..." The captain admitted, somewhat embarrassed. A failed capture witnessed by the target—as unsatisfactory as it gets.
Shortly thereafter, new intel arrived, detailing Boss White’s car make, color, and license plate number—all identified with precision.
Knowing this brought little immediate benefit, however. All they could do was rely on traffic monitoring personnel to keep an eye out at checkpoints. For now, their options were limited.
This wasn’t an era where ubiquitous surveillance existed. Most work relied entirely on manpower. If systems like SkyNet were in place, standing around at this intersection hoping for updates wouldn’t be necessary—they’d already have pursued their target.
"Alright then, keep investigating. I appreciate your efforts—this chase has been an ordeal for me too. Honestly, I’ve got a really upset stomach tonight, and I can’t hold out much longer—I think I’ll head back now!" Yan Fei said after hearing the latest details.
"Of course, Boss Yan. You should take care of yourself. We’re splitting teams anyway to man various traffic hot spots—maybe we’ll still catch them!" The officers were inwardly relieved to see Yan Fei leave, welcoming the chance to continue without extra pressure.
Yan Fei didn’t care whether they succeeded or not as he drove off toward home. With vehicle details now in mind, he planned to stretch his own legs and shake things up...
