Chapter 1620: Chapter 772: Invitation
Yan Fei used to be diligent, shuttling back and forth from Provincial City to Sancha River, but now with his wife by his side every day, he’s gotten lazy. After not returning for a while, a mountain of work had piled up.
Pang Fa and Chen Liqiang, who are in charge of the Meat Processing Factory, have applied several times to expand production, but they’ve been dissuaded by Yan Fei. His plan is to use cattle raised on the farm as much as possible to ensure quality. Although after turning into beef jerky, this difference might not be too obvious, but since the brand name Qian Niu Hua is being used, it would feel like cheating to use beef from other sources.
As for using beef from Dinosaur World, Yan Fei had abandoned that idea long ago. The beef is now unsellable not because he fears people will realize it’s from an unknown source, but because the quality is too high; it’s better kept for personal consumption or as gifts!
As the cattle farming scale kept expanding and the fertilizer factory and leather factory businesses gradually unfurled, there was an abrupt shortage of manpower. Heizi and others requested to hire more workers, and Yan Fei tasked Guan Shi with prioritizing this matter: hiring people was of utmost importance. He wanted to hire dependable and competent individuals, preferably with some educational background.
Thinking back to the days when he bent over backward to get Zhang Hui to find a few veterinarians with technical secondary school credentials, Yan Fei had worked so hard. Now, for Qian Niu Hua to hire, there’s no shortage of Technical Secondary School Students, even college and university graduates are no longer unthinkable— in fact, if the laboratory were hiring, there would be a throng outside his office wanting in. But Yan Fei thinks that to train leaders who get things done, they must start from the basics, thus having people start as workers when they first join, without lowering the standards nobody would come.
He’d rather lower the requirements to let people start from the bottom, this was Yan Fei’s own thinking. He felt that at the beginning, there were lots of uneducated vagrants and hooligans in the farm, but they managed to get the farm up and running, right?
So, although educational background is key, a person’s character and morality are even more important.
Besides hiring, there were also a total of miscellaneous things. For instance, Liu JinXue and Yang Hongqi were causing trouble, squatting in the lab all day unwilling to step out, reportedly losing over ten catties in a month. Then there were matters with the township and county – the road Yan Fei had decided to build when he was home was now nearly completed, yet some villages were dissatisfied, feeling it was unfair not to use their villagers, trying every means to call him and report the situation.
These issues couldn’t be resolved over the phone, and Yan Fei was too lazy to return and handle them himself. Now with Guan Shi around, he’d just have him act as the spokesperson to mediate these issues. With Yan Fei backing him up, Guan Shi’s words carried weight, and some conflicts were no longer conflicts.
Then there were requests for more fertilizer allotments for their own villages, calls for planting more grasses and raising more cattle in their villages... there really were a lot of issues, all conveyed through connections calling Yan Fei, who then sent people back with messages, which were much more effective than any phone conversation.
It’s all human nature. Villagers might feel unfairness, but with a word from Yan Fei, even if there was some injustice, everyone felt that the boss had spoken up for them, giving them face. Losing a little here and there didn’t seem worth fussing over anymore.
Guan Shi was afraid he wouldn’t remember all of it, as he didn’t have Yan Fei’s memory, able to recall each call taken and each issue heard in the past. Watching Yan Fei keep talking, he had no choice but to take out paper and pen, jotting down several pages of notes.
After Yan Fei finished giving his instructions, Guan Shi no longer lingered in the laboratory, directly taking those notes and returning home to act as the messenger.
Zhao Xiyan, watching his unhesitant departure, couldn’t quite describe the feeling in his heart. People are incomparable; while he was diving headfirst just to get into the lab, someone else couldn’t care less. The equipment he’s afraid to touch for fear of leaving fingerprints, someone else treated like just another machine...
Looking at Boss Yan in the office making calls on his cellphone, Zhao Xiyan silently continued on his experimental journey...
Envy doesn’t come around; the world is just like that. Just as some people fall in love under the blooming flowers, while others spend money for a date, and still others can only rely on themselves...
The call Yan Fei made was an international long-distance call, the cost of which even he winced at, but it was necessary. Because the money had been spent, and twenty heads of cattle had been shipped out, they should be arriving soon, and he definitely needed to keep an eye on the beef grading process.
On the phone, Anderson laughed heartily: "Don’t worry, there will absolutely be no problems. You have to trust me, my friend. Just wait until the cattle arrive here, everything will be as you wish, just sit tight for the good news!"
"Alright then!" Yan Fei said casually. "I hope to hear your good news soon."
There was one last thing left unsaid: if things didn’t go well, then he would have to come looking for him.
After hanging up, Yan Fei still had to attend a banquet.
A few days ago, the top ten historic specialties of the province were selected, and Wan City’s Yellow Cattle were among them. The city was organizing a celebration, and Yan Fei said he was too busy in Provincial City to attend, declining the invitation. But early this morning, he received a call from Deputy Mayor Chen, who oversees agriculture in the city, inviting him to a dinner at the city’s hotel in Provincial City.
The invitation was too sincere. A deputy mayor coming to Provincial City certainly had business to attend to. Yet he made a point of coming a day early, on the weekend no less, and his first action was to call Yan Fei for a dinner, explicitly stating that family members could come along. Clearly, he wanted to get closer to Yan Fei, and it would be too discourteous not to attend.
After leaving the laboratory and returning home, he saw Xu Xiaoyan engrossed in her books. The girl was studying for her postgraduate entrance exams, not so much for the higher degree but because if she passed, she could justify staying three more years in Provincial City with Yan Fei—As for three years later, in Xu Xiaoyan’s fantasies, by then Yan Fei would have graduated from college, and if they were to have a wedding, they could truly live together, flying side by side.
