Chapter 1617: Chapter 771: Those Things in the Laboratory

Dawn was barely breaking when James stood by the simple wooden fence, gazing through at the black herd of cows on the grassland as if in a dream.

He had thought that their brief period of comfort was about to end, never expecting to suddenly hear that this world had its own master and then arrive at this pasture which looked every bit the idyllic countryside.

Looking at the light said to emanate from a laboratory, he had the sudden illusion of having traveled from savagery to modernity.

The surrounding gazes held a mix of schadenfreude or a hint of sympathy coming from the base’s original inhabitants, whose clothes were relatively clean and who obviously looked well off, all ruddy-faced with good health; while those looking somewhat bewildered and at a loss were his companions who had been relocated with him.

"Moo..." The sound of a calf calling snapped the still muddled James to alertness. He lifted his head to gaze at the distant tall fence, feeling a sudden sense of calm, then turned his attention back to the peaceful herd of cows.

"Don’t eat it, put it down, hurry up and put it down..." A man with disheveled hair and a beard so thick his face was barely visible, barely wrapped in some cloth strips, suddenly ran out of a room, chased by two yellow-skinned laborers.

The yellow-skinned man who was shouting in panic used Japanese, which James happened to understand a little and could comprehend what was being said.

The man in front kept stuffing food into his mouth as he ran, while the two behind couldn’t pull him back. At this moment, a crowd of people came to help, and finally, the group fully subdued the man, pinning him to the ground.

"You can’t eat too much, you’ll die," said one of the yellow-skinned laborers in halting English, afraid the man on the ground wouldn’t understand, wildly gesticulating with his hands.

But the man on the ground clearly didn’t understand, or perhaps he wasn’t listening at all, still struggling desperately.

The people who had been standing dazedly in the open space, upon seeing a group of yellow-skinned laborers subduing a comrade who had come with them, almost instinctively crowded over, and although they hadn’t done anything yet, their eyes were clearly unfriendly.

Upon seeing this, some of the yellow-skinned people who appeared to be in charge of security quickly ran over...

Seeing the weapons in their hands, James suddenly realized what was happening and shouted out in broken Japanese as he rushed over, "Everybody calm down, it’s a misunderstanding..."

After shouting twice, he realized his mistake and switched back to English to explain to the people who had come with him, "He’s just been starving for too long; those people aren’t stopping him from eating, they’re just not letting him eat too much, it’s for his own good. Everybody stay calm..."

"Are you sure?" Just as he reached the middle of the crowd, someone suddenly grabbed him and asked sternly.

"Johnson?" James turned and was startled, this big fellow was not someone to be trifled with. But he was sure he hadn’t misheard earlier, and seeing that the yellow-skinned people who had pinned the man down clearly had no ill-intent, he nodded. "Of course I’m sure, they’re afraid he’ll eat too much; you know, this man has been surviving in the wilderness."

"Disperse, all those from the mothership, stand down," Johnson turned and yelled at the crowd.

At his command, everyone quickly stepped back a few paces.

The armed yellow-skinned people on the opposite side were all stunned, and James approached to continue in his broken Japanese, "They misunderstood, not knowing why this man was being held down..."

"He didn’t follow the rules, grabbing food in the cafeteria," one of the yellow-skinned men who had been chasing said. "The food distribution here is done by professional nutritionists; the food here is very high in energy. He looks like he hasn’t had a full meal in a long time, his stomach can’t handle too much."

"Sorry, it was a misunderstanding. He’s not with us; supposedly he’s from a Japanese air force base, and everyone from that base came here, put by... the boss on some small islands, he’s one of the survivors..."

The moment someone is associated with the word ’survivor,’ it’s especially easy to forgive them. Particularly those living in a dinosaur world, on thinking that this guy managed to survive for several months alone on an island, were full of admiration.

After an explanation, the misunderstanding was resolved, and instead of dispersing, people started to chat spiritedly. Those from Japan included members of the American air force stationed in Japan, as well as from an American aircraft carrier... Although they arrived at different times and places, at this moment, they all found common ground.

Especially when they compared themselves with those few skeletal survivors from the air force base, contemplating how these few were all that was left from the entire garrison—if someone were to ask them now, "Are you happy?" they would surely answer with pride and satisfaction into the microphone, "We are very happy."

James didn’t chat with the group for too long, as soon a different-looking group of yellow-skinned individuals, fluent in English and even some who were multilingual, emerged. And among those from the mothership, some high-level talents also spoke multiple languages; when both sides got together, they no longer needed him as a makeshift translator.

Moving aside once more, James’s gaze returned to the herd of cows. After more than half a year of seeing nothing but dinosaurs and monsters every day, seeing cows and the familiar Medicago sativa made everything feel so... familiar.
