Chapter 1614: Chapter 770: Integrating Labor
James tightened his grip on the gun in his hand, glanced up at the starry sky, and then shifted his gaze to the distance.
In the distance, there were seas, mountains, primeval jungles, and various dinosaurs, but no sign of home.
He was a true technician in the military; aside from routine basic training after joining, his other duties involved tinkering with various instruments. He was then lucky enough to be selected to board an aircraft carrier.
It truly was an honor, as he had worried before that one day, he might be sent to the battlefield. After all, America often acted as the world’s police, always ready to engage in conflict. Not every soldier during a peaceful era wanted to earn their stripes on the battlefield; James certainly did not.
Being on the aircraft carrier meant that he could stay away from war, at most participating in occasional drills, as he didn’t need to handle guns and cannons up close.
But everything changed six months ago, when the carrier mysteriously arrived in this ancient world. After a brief yet prolonged sea voyage, he and his troops landed on a continent filled with bizarre and ferocious dinosaurs and deadly insects unavoidable at every turn.
Originally, they had the aircraft carrier as their base, but more tragic events soon followed, as if heaven decided to exterminate them. Shortly after landing, the aircraft carrier disappeared.
Without the aircraft carrier, it meant they could no longer rely on its powerful weaponry or utilize its resources. They didn’t know the full extent of the land; at present, they had only explored within a few dozen miles—a discovery paid for with the lives of nearly a hundred men.
Without supplies of weapons and ammunition, the gun he carried now only had nine bullets. It was less for defense, and more to be used as a flare signal.
A gunshot could alert everyone to imminent danger. As for defending against those monsters, unless it was a Sharpshooter handling the firearm, ordinary soldiers with guns couldn’t do much against those huge beasts; they would rather provoke the monsters into a deadly counterattack.
Once, a soldier encountered a group of herbivorous dinosaurs the size of trucks and shot and wounded one. This resulted in the entire herd charging at him. When the herd passed, all that was left on the ground was a mix of mangled clothing and flesh, proof of the once-present comrade.
These were bloody lessons.
Those herbivorous dinosaurs would flee at the sight of a Rapator—but when facing armed humans, they would boldly charge.
Not to mention the various other dangers in the primitive jungle, their team now had no more distinctions like ’technician’. Instead, including some of the other non-combat personnel and medics, most individuals needed to arm themselves to defend their small camp.
It’s ironic. Had he known he would end up in such a place, why would he have bothered with learning technology? Why not learn more wilderness survival skills instead, at least then he could join the food-searching team and eat more each day... No, if he had known boarding the aircraft carrier would bring him here, he would have rather faced military court as a deserter than board the ship.
From afar the orderly footsteps came near, and James knew it was the surveillance squad. He immediately stood up straight, appearing not to look around, yet stealthily using the corner of his eyes to watch the marching squad.
This was a squad entirely made up of female soldiers, responsible for the camp’s security and discipline. The tough-looking woman leading, who could knock him down with a slap, was called Elisa. James wasn’t interested in her; instead, his eyes were on the blonde girl in the third row to the left...
But he could only look; he couldn’t do anything more. It wasn’t just him, who couldn’t even beat many of the female soldiers in the camp, even the burly men resembling Black Bears didn’t dare make a move on the surveillance team members—since they had magazines full of bullets and were authorized by the tyrant, Jones, to shoot at will.
Perhaps this was one of the camp’s leader, Jones’s tactics: having the surveillance squad march through the camp daily to keep the restless men alert—female soldiers were a rare resource in the army, and perhaps if they behaved well, they could earn some favor.
When the surveillance team passed by James, he immediately turned his head and obsessively watched the female soldiers’ retreating figures—not daring to blatantly stare from the front, but the back was free game! Standing guard daily, this little moment was all he had to invigorate himself!
Watching those swaying waists and the plump curves, James felt a certain part of his body become engorged. It wasn’t that he was a lecher by nature, but before, he could attract a few female soldiers for a friendly match using his privileged status as a technician.
However, since arriving in this world, technicians had become useless, far less popular than those simple-minded, physically capable men who could go out foraging for food.
As he was engrossed, suddenly a female soldier ran up to Elisa and whispered something in her ear. Then Elisa waved her hand and swiftly led the female soldiers towards the center of the camp.
On the other side, a burly man, whose arms were as thick as James’s legs, also led a squad towards the camp’s center. The burly man was Johnson, now the most popular guy in the squad, leading all the male soldiers and in charge of most camp-related combat tasks.
