Chapter 1611: Chapter 768: Top Ten Historical Specialties_3
You say your kale is good, but how much can you really sell it for per catty? To not mention anything else, in the current market situation, it’s barely break-even to transport it out of the county. Sending it out of the province would result in losses so severe you’d cough up blood in frustration.
Choosing kale is even less sensible than choosing Tanghe County’s gardenias, since at least those are Chinese medicinal materials and much easier to transport as finished products. The only reason the city chose kale, I reckon, is related to the fact that the county famous for kale is quite impoverished, purely an act of looking after the less developed areas. After all, Tanghe County’s economy has already raced ahead in the Wan City region.
But when it comes to provincial evaluations, they’re looking at prospects, not giving handouts to lagging areas.
Now, the leaders of those two impoverished counties sitting there surely won’t feel too enthusiastic upon seeing Yan Fei’s attitude. Their strengths were already a notch below beef, and now here comes Yan Fei, the leading figure of the beef industry, in person. Their advantages seemed even less by comparison.
Sure enough, before Director Liu and Yan Fei could exchange more than a few words, Yan Fei’s phone rang.
He walked out to the corridor to answer the call, and Director Niu on the other end got straight to the point, "Boss Yan, Mayor Chen and some others are with me right now. I wanted to ask if your call means you’ve received some news on your end?"
Are they already in a small meeting?
Upon hearing this, Yan Fei understood and measured his words before speaking, "Haven’t I always been in touch with the Agricultural University? I connected with a senior brother that works at the Agricultural Office a while back. Today he let slip some news, suggesting our cattle have a good chance of making the top ten. Also, I’ve received some other info that might save us from making blind attempts, which is why I called you about it."
"Alright, just wait a moment," said Director Niu.
Next came what seemed like a muffled consult over the covered phone.
After a while, Director Niu continued, "Boss Yan, if you’re confident on your end, let’s focus on beef as the key project. How confident you think you are?"
"I can’t say for sure, but Senior Brother Meng mentioned his vote was secure. I reckon if I look further, getting another three or five votes won’t be a problem, but I can’t guarantee more than that," Yan Fei said conservatively.
In fact, these three to five votes were also commitments from Senior Brother Meng, which Boss Yan shamelessly took credit for. Yet Yan Fei guessed that since Senior Brother Meng had asked him to make the trip, the chances for a spot were quite substantial. The rest was just for Wan City’s folks to make an appearance and let others know they were making an effort and valuing this ’top ten’.
Despite the conservative talk, the other end of the phone understood – it seemed like the higher-ups intended to prioritize beef, leaving the other two specialties with little hope.
Shortly after, Director Liu also received a call. After mumbling in response for a while, he hung up and warmly shook Yan Fei’s hand, "Boss Yan, I can’t thank you enough for your timely help. With a focus now, we’re even more confident about this."
The rest was simple. Yan Fei just had to mention those names he had noted down to Director Liu, and they could send people out to see them. It wasn’t guaranteed they’d meet with anyone by going, but you just had to visit their reception offices more often, drop off materials, and leave your name several times.
Naturally, if you’re lucky enough to get an audience, that’s just perfect.
Just as this was settled and Yan Fei was thinking of excuses to get out of lunch with Director Liu and the others, his phone rang again. He saw the name on the display and picked up immediately – it was Ivan’s voice on the other end: "Yan, I have some good news for you..."
After a burst of rapid conversation, everyone in the room was baffled, managing to catch just a few words here and there. Hardly anyone fully understood – probably not a single one.
After hanging up, Yan Fei said, "Excuse me, everyone, that was a friend from Russia. He’s at an exchange meeting in Wanlong and has just told me something urgent, so I have to rush over there."
