Chapter 1605: Chapter 766: Fake Can’t Be Real_2

Yang Xing continued to smile and did not respond to the remark.

No one is a fool. Yang Xing also understood that for someone like Yan Fei, who had gained great prestige from just one or two heavyweight papers, especially when he had never published any significant articles in the scientific community and was unknown, it was quite normal to be looked down upon or envied.

Just like in the college entrance examination, a student who never ranked well suddenly scores an impressively high grade, some students who believe they studied hard might think that the person simply got lucky.

It’s not just exams; in work and life, envy always surfaces. If some obscure individuals suddenly achieve something enviable, jealousy is inevitable.

Considering this, Yang Xing said, "May I use an office at your institute? When Boss Yan arrives, I would like to talk to him privately. Don’t be surprised, but the question I want to ask is related to some ongoing research that I cannot disclose yet. Would that be convenient?"

"Of course, of course, we all understand. The research you conduct is significant, rest assured, I’ll have someone prepare it right away. We won’t delay your work," the Old Bald Man, though slightly dissatisfied, had to accommodate Yang Xing’s request.

He turned to the young person next to him and said, "Go tidy up the small meeting room and prepare some tea!"

Yang Xing smiled and expressed his gratitude, "Thank you all for your trouble. My visit was rushed, and I apologize for any inconvenience. I should have notified you in advance, but I have to attend a conference in America soon and am a bit pressed for time. I appreciate it..."

Yan Fei arrived quickly; his people reached the Research Institute just as the preparations were completed.

Yang Xing, who appeared to be around thirty years old, did not look like those researchers buried in their studies. His complexion was slightly reddened, seemingly accustomed to being outdoors often, and his vigorous and energetic demeanor was clearly perceptible.

During the handshake, Yan Fei could notably feel some calluses on his hands, obviously not the type formed from handling research tools.

Yan Fei’s slight surprise caught Yang Xing’s attention, and he comically said, "I often run around outside, digging up fossils, usually dealing with rocks, so my hands often get calloused."

"No wonder you don’t look like someone who stays in the lab all day," Yan Fei laughed. "Are you looking to ask me about the River Scorpion?"

"No, no, no, I study ancient vertebrates, I’m less experienced with the ancient insects," Yang Xing humbly replied. "I wanted to ask about this Jigu Bird illustration you published in this magazine, what was it based on?"

"I’ve noticed you’ve written many similar articles with similar images as well. In these articles, you said your primary theory was based on kinematics, but it wasn’t detailed. I’ve encountered a topic recently and would like to understand more about this area if you don’t mind..."

"Of course, of course," Yan Fei, feeling a bit embarrassed by the politeness, responded. "Actually, it’s just something I wrote based on kinematics. I believe that no matter what the organism, its appearance, habitual behaviors, including evolutionary patterns, are traceable..."

After a long, rambling explanation, Yan Fei finally stopped, "May I ask why you are specifically inquiring about this Jigu Bird?"

Yang Xing pondered for two seconds: "In America, a scientist discovered a new fossil, and they believe it is a new species of Ancient Pound Bird. However, after more scientists discovered the fossil, some questioned that the fossil might not be from the same organism. Oh, the fossil was reportedly from Northeast Province, smuggled into America, where that scientist discovered it."

Yang Xing spoke as he picked up his briefcase, taking out some photos from inside: "The fossil hasn’t returned to us yet, I only have these photos, you can take a look. I think this fossil resembles the Jigu Bird you wrote about."

"What I called is indeed the Jigu Bird!" Yan Fei chuckled, then picked up the photos and started looking at them.

While he was looking, Yang Xing silently sat beside him, watching him expectantly, waiting for his answer.

About two minutes later, Yan Fei felt it was about time and confidently said, "This is indeed the fossil I called the Jigu Bird, you can call it the Ancient Pound Bird if you want, but this tail is fake, a fake just can’t become real, just by looking at this, it’s definitely patched on."

"Why?" Yang Xing asked further.

"No particular reason, I just feel like it doesn’t belong together." Yan Fei began to talk nonsense again. "Look, if you consider the size of their wings..."

Yan Fei’s conclusion was absolutely correct, as for the theory, it was purely made up by the laborers for him. It wasn’t exactly made up since those laborers were specialized in research, and even if their previous research had nothing to do with paleontology, surviving in the world of dinosaurs till now made them genuine experts. If they couldn’t provide reliable theoretical support with the results, apart from feeding dinosaurs as fertilizer, they were of no other use to Yan Fei.

Although Yan Fei wasn’t too detailed in his explanation, it was already enough for Yang Xing. In fact, he already had doubts, which proved he had opinions about the fossil, coming to Yan Fei for confirmation, but wanted to hear other thoughts as well.

After Yang Xing reconsidered with the photos for a while, Yan Fei couldn’t help but ask the question he had in mind: "If I may ask, strictly speaking, I’ve only published one somewhat decent paper. How did you come to notice my articles published in... these magazines?"

Yan Fei was genuinely curious about this question, how could a regular expert from the Academy of Sciences, who should be usually busy, even bother reading such messy magazines — if one could become an expert just by reading these magazines, then experts would be everywhere.

"Haha!" Yang Xing laughed. "Student Yan really speaks his mind. In fact, I do read some similar magazines occasionally because some wild ideas in them can provide insights for my research work. But what really made me notice you, was this."

As he spoke, Yang Xing took out another magazine from his briefcase: "Take a look, this image is drawn by you, right?"

"Yeah!" Yan Fei glanced and nodded immediately, his memory was exceptional, he remembered clearly whatever he had published in any magazine, just by looking at the title."

"That settles it." Yang Xing said with a smile. "Recently, there has been a big news in the paleontology field, and I guess you definitely wouldn’t know."

"What’s the big news?" Yan Fei continued to ask. There was a lot of news; key was, which news was associated with this paper and this image - he was unaware of any.

"It’s about a fossil." Yang Xing unraveled the mystery. "Last year, a new fossil was discovered, truly a miracle, that fossil had muscle tissue. Really a miracle, and moreover, the person who discovered this fossil was a non-professional, about the same age as you."

"This fossil is different from the usual dinosaur fossils with only skeletal remains; this fossil has preserved the entire muscle structure and skin texture of the dinosaur with great completeness. For paleontological research, this discovery could save us from taking many detours."

"But what’s more amazing, guess what, when scientists reconstructed this dinosaur’s original form... I accidentally found that the reconstruction, and this image of yours, are virtually the same..."
