Chapter 155: Chapter 31 Volunteering_1
After the college entrance exam, it was time for the students to estimate their scores and start filling out their college applications.
However, the students weren’t required to fill in their choices immediately. They were given three days to estimate their scores and carefully contemplate their choices of schools and majors.
During these three days, the students didn’t need to stay on campus. They could start packing up their things and go home, only to return three days later for the submission of their forms.
At this moment in the campus, students were indulging in their final moments of freedom.
Couples who had been secretly dating could finally chat in the corners of the campus without holding back. But not many dared to date openly. Most students were found in small groups, strolling around the campus — yes, this was an era where high school relationships were still considered ’early romance’.
It was always like this with students — they longed for holidays when they were in school, but when the time came to go home, they showed no urgency.
Just as Yan Fei was following Xu Xiaoyan, he suddenly stopped in confusion in front of a building asking, "You’re not thinking of taking me into your dormitory, are you?"
"How else would you help me with my luggage? I have a lot of stuff. What’s wrong with entering a girls’ dormitory? Everyone’s up now. What are you scared of? Many others wish they could get in." Xu Xiaoyan responded matter-of-factly.
Unconsciously surveying his surroundings, Yan Fei indeed spotted many boys loitering around the area. Most of them were probably aspiring to confess their feelings to their crushes, yet they didn’t have the courage to enter the girls’ dormitories.
Seeing Yan Fei on the verge of entering the dormitory with a girl, they must have been green with envy!
Xu Xiaoyan seemed to have grown taller in the past year, probably due to better nutrition. And Yan Fei was growing taller at a steady pace. As they walked side by side, although Yan Fei seemed a little shorter, it was no longer possible to discern their age difference.
A boy striding confidently towards the girls’ dormitory — who wouldn’t sit up and take notice?
However, all these gazes didn’t matter to Yan Fei. After giving it a moment’s thought, he nodded and said, "Alright, you lead the way. Just make sure there are no girls undressed in there."
"Che, in your dreams!" Xu Xiaoyan retorted contemptuously, then proudly leading the way for him.
It was chaos on our route.
The girls got out of bed hadn’t necessarily dressed up yet, and even if they had, they might not want to be seen. A lot of them had messy hair and bare faces. Xu Xiaoyan chuckled to herself the entire way, undeterred by the occasional teasing. Her thick skin surpassed even Yan Fei’s.
Yan Fei had to keep his head down and stay vigilant at all times because you never knew when you’d come across some lingering undergarments.
Thankfully, Xu Xiaoyan’s roommates were already up and packing, which saved Yan Fei some embarrassment.
There really wasn’t much to pack. All the girls were from rural areas with a limited amount of clothing. Their winter bedding was already sent home. The leftover bedding wasn’t considered a large item.
The items in greatest quantity were books, and even they weren’t too many. Since we were in an era where reference materials for the college entrance exam were not yet popular, packing them up was easy.
Xu Xiaoyan had already tidied up. All of her textbooks were neatly stacked together. The exam papers and reference materials were packed together, and the bedding was rolled up.
All Yan Fei needed to do was bag them up with the sacks he had brought.
There were exactly two big sacks — this girl knew how to live. Not only did she keep her old clothes, but she also didn’t dispose of even a single scrap of paper. Everything was tidied up and ready to take home.
"Sisters, I’m leaving ahead of you. You can pack up at your own pace! See you in three days!" With Yan Fei almost done packing her stuff, Xu Xiaoyan bade goodbye to her roommates, ready to pick up her stuff.
"I’ve got this. You won’t be able to lift it." Yan Fei quickly intervened.
"It’s okay, I’ll take the lighter one with the clothes. Wow, it’s quite heavy!" While talking, Xu Xiaoyan lifted one of the bags, finding it heavier than expected, so she was ready to bend over and hoist it up.
"Alright, alright, just leave it be! The bag is dirty; you’ll get your clothes soiled!" Yan Fei stopped her, casually picking up the bag. He then casually picked up the other one as well, ready to head out.
One of the girls gasped in awe, "Incredible! Lifting those big bags as if he were sipping a glass of cold water."
Xu Xiaoyan, beaming proudly, "Well, why don’t you all go find yourselves one too! As long as you don’t snatch mine away."
With the holiday approaching, this girl seemed to have grown bold enough to say such things.
Yan Fei, however, was as nonchalant as could be, setting out straight away. Xu Xiaoyan, after sharing a few more laughs with her roommates, hurried after him.
"Yan Xiaofei, can’t you walk a little slower and wait for me?" Yan Fei had nearly reached the stairs by the time Xu Xiaoyan finished her conversation. Catching up after a few quick steps, she asked, "Are we taking the bus directly home? We don’t have anything urgent, so why don’t we go for a stroll?"
"What’s there to see? Do you need to buy anything?" Yan Fei slowed his pace.
"No, not really. I just thought of going for a walk. Forget it, let’s just go home!" The girl changed her mind again within seconds. "Where do we catch the bus?"
"Anywhere would do." Yan Fei responded noncommittally. To him, walking home with all his luggage was also an acceptable option, although he was more concerned about tiring out the girl.
"Then let’s go to the bus station." Xu Xiaoyan decided.
Yan Fei looked at her questioningly. Usually, they never went to the bus station, preferring to hail buses along the way instead. Not only was it cheaper, but it also saved time spent on the bus. Once the public buses left the station, they would keep stopping to pick up and drop off passengers, slowing them down even more than the pedestrians.
"The bus station has seats! It’s packed today, there won’t be any seats if we board the bus outside." Xu Xiaoyan could tell what Yan Fei was thinking, explaining her reasons. "I’ve something to tell you, so let’s get there early and grab a good seat."
Most people didn’t board the bus at the station since the ticket price was fixed. Bargaining was possible while hailing buses outside the station, saving maybe a dime or two.
Xu Xiaoyan felt the pinch regarding the extra few dimes. After all, it was Yan Fei who paid for the tickets. She used to board the bus outside the station when returning home, literally two steps away from the station gate, to negotiate a better price with the conductor.
"Do you have any money left? I can give you more." Yan Fei asked, observing her reaction to the money.
"You don’t need to give me any. I still have lots left! When I came to take the exam, my dad gave me ten dollars, my mom secretly gave me another five, and you gave me five. That’s twenty dollars total. Apart from buying stuff, I still have about ten left! Hurry up, put the stuff on the bus and get on!" The girl responded in one breath. It seemed she had a clear idea about the amount of money she had. Not like Yan Fei, who always was indifferent about having money or not — he always finds a way to earn when he’s out of money and barely keeps track of it even if he has some.
After stowing the luggage in the bus’s boot, as soon as they got on the bus Xu Xiaoyan skillfully guided Yan Fei to the last row corner seats.
"Why won’t you ask me what I want to choose as my major?" The moment they got seated, she straightened up, ready to ’interrogate’ Yan Fei.
"Why do I need to ask? You can choose whatever you want. As long as you’re happy, that’s all that matters." Yan Fei replied with a nonchalant expression.
"You...." She gave him a good ruffle out of irritation. "Aren’t you afraid I’ll choose a school far away? What if I...? Forget it, no point talking about this. Just listen, and don’t tell anyone else. I’ve made up my mind. I want to apply to our province’s university."
