Chapter 151: Chapter 27 The Final Battle of College Entrance Exam_1

In the silent examination hall, only the rustling sound of pencil tips scraping against exam papers filled the air.

"Pfft ..." Suddenly, a female student’s laughter bubbled out of nowhere.

The sound was not particularly loud, but in this quiet and serious examination room filled with tension, it was nearly as shocking as seeing a ghost. Many students instinctively turned their heads towards the direction of the laughter, but could not pinpoint who had made the noise.

Even after the invigilators quietly reminded them, some students still shot annoyed glances in that direction, apparently believing that they could spot the culprit with a few more looks.

Indeed, in such an exam room under such hot weather, those students who could manage to remain calm and not to sweat anxiously were clearly exceptional. Most students were profusely sweating, occasionally even vigorously rubbing their hands on the table, despite its uneven surface, because excessive sweat on their hands might affect their answers.

In this era, the college entrance examination not only tests individuals, but also bears the hope of changing the destiny of generations with each exam. For most impoverished rural students, if they pass, it’s like a fish leaping over the dragon gate. If they fail, many will not have the opportunity to retake the exam and will have to return to their old life, repeating the fate of generations before them, laboring hard in the fields all their lives.

Under such circumstances, even if the invigilators were standing there cracking jokes, it’s not likely that any students would laugh, let alone to this odd and out-of-place laughter.

Only the two invigilators knew who laughed, and it wasn’t until all the students had turned to look in that direction that the two invigilators simultaneously shot a warning glance at a certain female student there.

There were not many students in the test room, and the two teachers had noticed the girl early on.

From the moment they entered the exam room, all the students were tense. Even those filled with confidence could not escape being affected by the nervous atmosphere. However, this girl seemed extraordinarily blissful when she entered, as if she was out shopping.

After the exam papers were handed out, while other students were checking and rechecking their papers, this girl didn’t wait for the invigilators to speak. Instead, she swiftly moved her pen across the paper.

Actually, by looking at their exam papers, one could tell that many students had decent handwriting. However, the first things they wrote on the exam paper were their names and classes, which they had written countless times before. The words were written stroke by stroke, and even slightly messy handwriting seemed good enough. Then, there were even some who were so nervous that they mistakenly wrote something.

When they started answering the questions, the difference became even more noticeable.

While everyone else answered the questions with utmost caution, only that girl wrote at an unusually fast pace, scribbling down answers under the questions without even seeming to think.

A student like her either has given up and plans to answer randomly, or has such strong mental fortitude that she puts the two teachers to shame—they were more anxious than her as invigilators, fearing that some students may encounter problems.

Indeed, this girl was none other than Student Xu Xiaoyan.

She was lucky, as she was assigned to the examination room in her own school and was familiar with the classroom. Coupled with a certain reason in her heart, she was extraordinarily relaxed and did not show the slightest bit of anxiety.

After quickly scanning her exam paper at the start, she began to fill in the answers, only to laugh out loud unintentionally when she saw the essay topic at the end.

This year’s essay topic happened to be based on two cartoons that required a discursive essay to be written.

The cartoons were naturally humorous, both poking fun at perfunctory attitudes. One portrayed a large hand missing a thumb, titled "Cosmetic Surgery for Six Fingers". However, the other was even more tragic, showing a patient whose right leg had been amputated while it was indicated in the cartoon that the operation was to amputate the left leg. The title of this cartoon was "Amputated the Wrong Leg".

The girl could not help but burst out laughing the moment she saw the cartoons. She nearly became the center of attention in the examination hall. Fortunately, she reacted quickly and pretended to answer the questions, not daring to lift her head for a long time.

After pretending for a while and seeing that no one around was paying attention to her, she finally composed herself and began to write her essay.

As always, she wrote quickly.

A six hundred-word essay seemed too short to fully demonstrate her ability!

Feeling not yet satisfied after putting down her pen, she checked the exam paper again and looked around at the students who were racking their brains and deep in thought, and then started to daydream while sitting.

And not just daydreaming, but grinning foolishly too!

She was thinking about a certain silly boy, wondering if he would become sillier after hearing her ambitions.

After thinking about it for a while, she started to feel a bit disheartened. That fool probably wouldn’t find anything surprising. After all, according to his mindset, as long as you get into a university, it doesn’t matter which one or what major, as long as you become a university student!

The more she thought about it, the angrier she got. She couldn’t help muttering, "Idiot!" under her breath.

Yan Fei, the person being called an idiot by this girl, was sitting under the shade of a tree, aimlessly holding a large watermelon, and carving it with a knife.

He carved a hole here, and another there, finally sculpting a big funny face on the watermelon. He seemed rather satisfied with his own work.

Every exam site only allows exam candidates to enter. There were routine patrols, so this time he didn’t sneak inside by climbing over the wall. Instead, he just honestly waited in the woods outside the school gate.

Yan Fei was very familiar with the place; he had found a good spot in the shade where the sun couldn’t reach for the whole day. Then, he brought a table, a small stool, and a large watermelon for Xu Xiaoyan to eat after the exam.

She didn’t dare to eat it before the exam, in case she needed to go to the toilet later!

Not many family members accompanying the exam candidates were up to much. Rural students arrived in advance and stayed in the guest house without any family around for the exam. Only the students living in the town had some family members accompanying them during the exam.

Other parents stood anxious, alternating between checking their watches and staring anxiously at the school gate. Meanwhile, Yan Fei was carving the other side of his watermelon.

As he was carving, he would scoop out some watermelon pulp and eat it, which made the parents around him so envious that they started salivating.

The school was some distance away from the main road, and the people doing business were not flexible enough to set up shop here; there was nothing available to be bought even if they were hungry and thirsty.

Just as Yan Fei finished carving his "watermelon flower", Xu Xiaoyan cheerfully skipped out of the school.

She ran up to Yan Fei and began, "Ah, Yan Xiaofei, you’re quite talented. You can even carve a watermelon into...Oh..."

Before she could finish her sentence, she heard a crisp sound. Yan Fei raised his knife and then split the watermelon in half with a single stroke.

"You... I haven’t even gotten a good look yet. Don’t cut it, let me look at it before you cut!" Xu Xiaoyan was so annoyed, this guy was way too fast.

"It’s too late now!" As Yan Fei spoke, he made a few more cuts and the watermelon was chopped into small pieces. "Quick, eat it now. You refused to eat it when we came in. You must be thirsty now!"

"Whatever!" Xu Xiaoyan picked up a piece of watermelon and started eating. "You wouldn’t believe how funny our essay topic was..."

Listening to this girl babbling on about her humorous encounter, the other students slowly started to emerge from the school. Many familiar classmates started to gather together, discussing the gains and losses from the exam.
