Chapter 148: Chapter 24: Trinkets Exchanged for Wine_1
""Huh?"
When Xu Xiaoyan opened her eyes, she stared at the ceiling, taking quite a while to realize something wasn’t right.
Then, as her mind gradually woke up, she started to recall last night’s events.
She had fallen asleep on Yan Fei’s back last night and he had carried her back to the cattle farm. It was there that she groggily woke up, had been placed onto the bed by Yan Fei, and had fallen asleep without even taking off her clothes. Now that she had awoken, she could see through the window that the sun was already high in the sky.
Thinking about her bold and reckless behavior on the road last night, she abruptly pulled the blanket over her face, careless about whether Yan Fei’s stuff was dirty or not, and tossed and turned in bed.
If Yan Fei saw her, he would definitely ask if she had a stomachache.
"I must have been possessed!" After struggling for a long while, the young lady murmured, and then got out of bed and slipped on her shoes, her face turning red.
Thinking back on how she had seemingly forgotten to remove her shoes last night and how Yan Fei had probably done it for her, she suddenly felt a bit awkward.
After composing herself in her room for a while, she sneaked towards the door and peeked outside.
The sound of the door opening immediately alerted the four big dogs outside, who promptly walked over to her, tails wagging.
"Lazybones, you slept till this late?" Yan Fei walked out from the room next door. "There’s food in the pot, hurry up and eat! Are you going home today or not? If you don’t want to, just wait at the cattle farm and we’ll go see the exam site tomorrow."
"Er, let’s talk about it later! What’s there to eat anyway? I’m starving." The young lady, who had been worried about any unusual signs from Yan Fei, saw that he seemed unaltered as if nothing had happened the previous night, and instantly relaxed.
There was a small pang of disappointment in her heart, as if she had expected Yan Fei to say something, yet even she didn’t know what she wanted him to say.
However, all these thoughts vanished the moment she lifted the lid off the pot.
Several different colored dishes, both vegetarian and non-veg, green peppers, tomatoes, cucumber, and some meat dishes she could not identify, all hot and cold dishes were plentiful.
Seeing Yan Fei also serving himself a bowl of porridge, Xu Xiaoyan asked in surprise, "You haven’t eaten yet?"
"Not yet! Waited for you." Yan Fei replied casually, while passing her a pair of chopsticks from the side.
"Oh!" The young lady felt bubbles of happiness in her heart. He wasn’t that dumb after all, right? He had prepared so many delicious dishes early in the morning and even waited to eat with her, she felt utterly happy.
Of course, she didn’t know that Yan Fei was just fresh from learning some cooking and was eager to try out his new skills.
He had slaughtered a Rapator in the middle of the night and experimented with cooking different parts of the meat from the creature!
As for the vegetables, they were all from Vegetable Garden Island. It was their second harvest, and no one knew when the watermelon had been planted. Anyway, after eating the watermelon, they simply threw a few seeds into the empty ground and buried them, as simple as that.
Now that they were no longer planning to sell vegetables, they didn’t need to plant much. Just enough to eat, and perhaps give a bit to others.
In the midst of Xu Xiaoyan’s murmuring, Yan Fei cleaned up the kitchen and brought her to the room where they sold alcohol.
Lin Yumei’s daughter, Fang Xiaoqing, was sitting in that room doing her summer homework! Upon seeing them enter, her face flushed, she greeted Xu Xiaoyan and left the room, head low and homework in hand.
This made Xu Xiaoyan feel bashful. Even though nothing had happened, she still felt uncomfortable.
But this girl has always been quick to bounce back, and before long she was chattering away again, and stopped talking about going home. Despite the fact that she normally appears to be a rather quiet girl, she becomes incredibly talkative when she’s around Yan Fei, to the point where she could fill an entire day with her own dialogue, with no input necessary from him.
It wasn’t until almost noon, when Lin Yumei came over to ask if she should prepare lunch for them both, that the girl finally jumped up, exclaiming, "Oh dear, I need to get home!"
Then she dashed next door to pick up her backpack, insisting that she had to leave.
Yan Fei had no choice but to bring out his motorcycle and take her home.
She didn’t want him to drop her off directly at her home, so she hopped off the motorcycle quite a distance away and made the rest of the journey with her small bag on her back.
Left alone, Yan Fei was too lazy to cook, especially since he had already fed a few dogs last night and had enjoyed a feast himself in the middle of the night.
The three puppies from Vegetable Garden Island, who followed Yan Fei everywhere, were always well fed and watered. But the luck of the four big dogs at the cattle farm had run out. Lin Yumei only fed them leftovers, and it had been several days since they had tasted meat.
So, after returning home last night and making sure Xu Xiaoyan was asleep, he retreated to a room next door to enter the game ’Vegetable Garden Island’ and killed a few dinosaurs to stew their meat.
Just after eating and heading forward, Lin Yumei came over too and called out to him before she even reached the door, "Xiao Fei, there’s something I need to tell you."
"What’s the matter?"
"Well, an old woman came to buy wine yesterday, and she only has a paralyzed son at home. His wife ran away with their grandson. The old woman is so frail she can barely walk, let alone harvest grass. Even if she could, she wouldn’t be able to transport it. She brought some silver coins hoping to exchange them for some liquor. I felt sorry for her, so without waiting for your approval, I gave her a pot of wine," Lin Yumei stuttered.
"Well, so be it, what do we want with her stuff? A few catties of wine aren’t worth much," Yan Fei waved it off, thinking it was no big deal.
"I knew you’d say that, but the old lady insisted on leaving something in exchange. She wouldn’t take the wine for free. I thought I’d keep it for you as a keepsake, so I accepted it. I know which village she’s from, and that she’s really struggling. In future, if we find out that the wine worked and her son’s condition improved, we won’t feel guilty about taking her stuff, right?" Lin Yumei said, now more relaxed since Yan Fei didn’t blame her.
Over time, they all had come to understand Yan Fei better - he wasn’t stingy. He was also the type to lend a hand when needed.
Helping out like this didn’t cost much, and occasionally making these decisions alone helped to earn Yan Fei a good reputation.
Yan Fei wasn’t really interested in this, until he heard that the item could serve as a keepsake. Then, he was intrigued.
He took the small cloth bag that Lin Yumei handed him, opened it, and found, wow, quite a few! Most of them were white, and there were also two yellow ones. These silver coins were well preserved. Whether they were yellow or white, they shone under the sun!
Yan Fei was thrilled, "Isn’t this what those traitors on TV use, to bribe informants? And they’re even different colors?"
As he spoke, he grabbed a handful and started tossing them up and down in his hand, mumbling to himself, "Yours, if you serve the Yellow Army, you will be handsomely rewarded..."
At this moment, Yan Fei was acting like a typical playful youth of his age.
Lin Yumei secretly breathed a sigh of relief. Although she was just trying to be kind, she was a bit afraid that their mysterious young boss might disapprove. A pot of wine, five catties plus the pot cost, probably amounted to two or three ten-yuan bills. If Yan Fei didn’t want these silver coins in exchange, it would be a significant loss of wages for her.
Shortly after Lin Yumei left, Yan Fei lost interest in playing with the coins. Just as he was thinking of taking a nap, Miss Xu Xiaoyan came back with her bag.
From a distance, the girl started giggling when she saw him. She ran over, her ponytail swinging in the sunlight, and laughing so hard her eyes wrinkled up like a little fox, "I told them I’m going back to school this afternoon to prepare for my exams, then I sneaked out," she said.
Upon hearing this, Yan Fei couldn’t help but laugh too.
