Chapter 147: Chapter 23 Crossing the River_1
Xu Xiaoyan returned to school to fetch a small bag, swapped her skirt for trousers, and then left town with Yan Fei.
Gradually, once they moved away from the main road, there were hardly any people in sight.
It was clear that Xu Xiaoyan began to fill with doubts as they went along, "Yan Xiaofei, you often travel back and forth at night. Have you ever encountered anything bizarre or strange?"
"Yes, there have been thieves, and one who was stealing oil. You know all about this, right? The new motorbike was a gift from the oil thief. He also gave me a very nice knife."
"Oh come on! Who’s asking about that?" Xu Xiaoyan leaned in closer, lowering her voice. "I mean ghost-like or monster-like things. Have you heard the stories that there used to be monsters around our town?"
At night, the surrounding fields were quiet except for the croaking frogs and chirping insects from the drainage ditches in the fields. The crops rustled in the wind. As Xu Xiaoyan spoke, she painted terrifying pictures in her own mind and then hurriedly leaned back in toward Yan Fei after finishing.
"No!" Yan Fei answered resolutely.
He had never seen any monsters. That much was a fact.
Usually, it was people who inadvertently saw something and branded it a monster.
If he remembered correctly, the rumored monster from their childhood was just them transforming into a Pterosaur and practicing their flying.
"Really, nothing at all?" Xu Xiaoyan still sounded a little scared. She leaned in again and clung to Yan Fei’s arm without realizing that the person she was holding was indeed the one capable of those seventy-two changes. "What, aren’t you scared being out here in the pitch dark?"
"Not at all!" came the decisive answer. "What’s there to be afraid of?"
He muttered to himself: "I have never lied, people are generally afraid of me. Some even hand over their weapons out of fear, and one even ’gifted’ a motorbike. Especially that motorbike ’donor’, the oil thief, he was scared until he nearly had a nervous breakdown."
Throughout the journey, Xu Xiaoyan kept up a steady stream of conversation, and gradually her fear subsided — Yan Fei seemed so nonchalant, he knew this route so well, he would even point out every abandoned rabbit hole.
They arrived at the riverside.
Seeing Xu Xiaoyan roll up her pants to wade through the river, Yan Fei thought for a moment and offered, "You’re not familiar with the varying depths in the river. Let me carry you."
"Huh?" Xu Xiaoyan was taken aback, her face suddenly flushing. "Is that okay? I’m taller than you, can you carry me?"
"No problem, climb on," Yan Fei steadied himself, waiting for Xu Xiaoyan to get on. After a while, he urged her again, "Hurry up!"
Once Xu Xiaoyan was on his back, Yan Fei inexplicably blurted out, "Your body is really soft!"
That was heartfelt. Especially her soft back resting against him, he even deliberately straightened his body, feeling quite comfy.
"You’re going to get it!" Yan Fei couldn’t see Xu Xiaoyan’s expression, but he could feel the pain from the pinch she delivered. She then commanded, "No more talking, let’s go!"
"Why did you pinch me?" Yan Fei complained, stepping into the water and navigating through the familiar, flatter areas of the riverbed.
The river water rushed by, and all that they could hear in the quiet night was the splashing of water.
After a while, Xu Xiaoyan began speaking again. "Yan Xiaofei, do you remember how when we were young, I would often carry you home when you were dazed?"
Yan Fei: "..."
"Talk..."
"Didn’t you tell me not to speak?"
"You... well, now I’m telling you to talk!"
"I don’t remember. How am I supposed to remember when I was dazed? Those times I woke up I was already on your back."
"Just forget it then! Humph!"
She grumbled, deciding to ignore him.
However, after only a few steps, she couldn’t help herself, "Do you remember when you used to pick apart your cotton jacket to stuff my shoes?"
"I can’t remember. That happened a long time ago. And because of that, I was beaten when I got home. It’s peculiar how you remember it so clearly. You must have been very pleased to hear about me getting a beating."
"Yes, I was very pleased..." She replied softly, followed by a profound sigh.
"I knew it! You were just reveling in my misery! Hmph! I only gave it to you because your toes were freezing. You don’t appreciate good deeds!" Yan Fei begrudged.
"Dummy..."
"You’re the dummy!"
"You’re just a big dummy!"
"You are the one... Ouch, why are you biting my ear? Fine, fine, I am!" Yan Fei yelled in pain. "Okay, we’re here, time to get off!"
"Serves you right! Hmph, I won’t get down. When I used to carry you, I thought that as soon as you could carry me, I would make you run with me on your back, hmph, now it’s coming true!" The girl continued talking while grinding her teeth on Yan Fei’s back, clearly, she had been looking forward to this for a while.
Yan Fei broke into a run: "If you’re not scared of bumps, then stay put!"
"Ah..." Xu Xiaoyan was startled by his sudden acceleration and shouted instinctively. But she quickly burst into laughter. "Run, just run, it serves you right if you are tired..."
"I’m not tired!"
"What, you’re a bull? You’re not even tired after carrying a person?"Actually, Yan Fei was only trotting. The girl on his back didn’t feel too jostled, otherwise, she wouldn’t have the mood to chat. "When I used to carry you, it felt like carrying a dead pig, so heavy."
"But you’re not heavy." Yan Fei could still talk while trotting, and added, "You have so much flesh on you, yet you feel so light?"
As he spoke, he shrugged his body and unconsciously grabbed a couple of times.
How could she not have flesh? The parts he was carrying on his back, the parts he was holding onto were all areas of the girl’s body where there was plenty of flesh.
"Yan Xiaofei, are you asking for death?" The girl screamed as if she’d been bitten.
"What happened?"
"You...Hmph!" The girl snorted and ignored him.
After a while, she softly asked, "Are you tired? If you are, I’ll get off and walk!"
"Not tired, it’s nothing!" Yan Fei slowed down and began strolling along the country road, "You’ve already come so far, you must be tired. Let me carry you a little longer."
"I’m not tired either. I just want you to carry me!" She lowered her head slightly as she spoke, sniffing gently. Then she felt her face burning and laid it back on his shoulder. In a dreamy mumble, she murmured, "You hardly even sweat..."
"That’s because I’m much stronger than a bull." Yan Fei bragged proudly.
I could even turn into a dinosaur, what’s a bull? Let alone carrying a person, could it be heavier than that Iguanodon’s thigh?
"Hmph, stupid bull, don’t you feel tired?"
"Haven’t you heard? ’There are no bulls that die of exhaustion, only men who die of foolishness.’" Yan Fei continued to boast.
"Idiot, you got the lyrics wrong, it’s supposed to be ’There are no bulls that die of suffocation, only men who die of foolishness’. That’s you! Hmph, I bet you’ll die of foolishness sooner or later!"
"Anyway, it’s pretty much the same thing, who likes that mushy song?"
"Hmph, making excuses because you can’t remember. I’ll exhaust you to death, who said there are no bulls that die of exhaustion, I’ll prove it today." The girl pushed herself down on him; finding it unsuccessful, she used her chin to forcefully press down on Yan Fei’s shoulder instead.
"Stop messing around, hehe, your hair is tickling me." Yan Fei was uncomfortable due to her mischief.
"I will mess around, I’ll tire you out." The girl blabbered, and her face suddenly flushed. "Do you know what ’Only a tired bull and no rotten pear’ means? Hehe... let me tell you, that Zhou Peipei who dines with us, she always talks like a hooligan, and all our dorm mates have been corrupted by her!"
"I have no idea, but carrying you won’t tire me out!" Yan Fei didn’t understand the girl’s sudden merriment.
"That’s why I say you are a stupid fool. Hmph!" The girl hummed through her nose, then adjusted her position to get more comfortable, "Well, then carry me home, it’s really comfortable!"
"Mm!" Yan Fei grunted in agreement and took long strides towards home.
The night breeze blew lightly, bringing with it the scent of the fields, and an unknown floral fragrance wafted through the darkness.
"Yan Xiaofei..."
"Hm, what’s up?"
"Nothing..."
"..."
"Shall I sing you a song?"
"Mm!"
"I give you my heart...from now on...take good care of it ..." She sang softly for a while, then came to a sudden stop. She didn’t sing the rest of the lyrics, but hummed out the melody in a low voice.
Yan Fei continued walking obliviously, after some distance, he realized the girl on his back was quiet.
When he turned around, he saw that she had fallen asleep, her head resting on his shoulder. Her delicate nose rose and fell subtly with her breath in the moonlight. Her long eyelashes flickered occasionally with his steps.
She had already fallen asleep.
