Chapter 146: Chapter 22 - Unreasonable_1

Yan Fei stood in the corner of the school waiting before classes were dismissed, wondering what Xu Xiaoyan was up to.

As soon as school let out, he saw Xu Xiaoyan bouncing over with great enthusiasm.

Despite his slow perception, Yan Fei instantly recognized that the girl had changed her clothes, and she was now wearing the new outfit he had bought for her last time.

"What do you have to tell me?" Even before the girl could steady herself, Yan Fei asked anxiously.

"How about we go shopping and head back afterward?" Xu Xiaoyan said this with some embarrassment, a blush creeping up her face.

Usually,Xu Xiaoyan would shout for Yan Xiaofei first and then make her demands. It was a rarity for her to talk in such a quiet and soft tone. Yan Fei instantly agreed without a second thought contemplating that in language arts, this tone was considered an imperative sentence.

As they walked together, Xu Xiaoyan remained silent, which was uncommon. Yan Fei asked curiously, "What’s wrong? Why are you not talking today?"

Xu Xiaoyan’s face flushed, and, in a reproving tone, she said, "Mind your own business. Can’t I ignore you if I want to?"

"Oh!" Yan Fei felt embarrassed and dejected and simply kept his head down to continue walking.

"This way!" Xu Xiaoyan tugged at Yan Fei when they reached an intersection, noticing that he was still marching straight ahead, oblivious to his surroundings.

"Don’t you already have clothes?" Yan Fei didn’t even have to turn around to know that a turn would lead them to the clothing market. He asked surprised.

"So what if I do? Just come with me!" Xu Xiaoyan responded, heading into the market with her head held low.

Yan Fei grew even more curious as instead of checking out women’s clothing as usual, Xu Xiaoyan was staring at the men’s stores. "Why are you looking at men’s clothing stores?" he asked.

"Just be quiet and follow me." From Yan Fei’s perspective, there was definitely something off about Xu Xiaoyan that day. She was acting strange.

At another men’s clothing store, Xu Xiaoyan once again stood at the entrance, peering in.

The store owner noticed her looking and smilingly asked, "Buying clothes for your little brother? Why not come in and take a look?"

Without thinking, Xu Xiaoyan shook her head, but a moment later, her face turned red, and she nodded. Suddenly, she turned around, grabbed Yan Fei, and moved away.

After they had passed several other stores, Xu Xiaoyan finally spotted a short-sleeved shirt she liked. She picked it up and told Yan Fei, "Stand still, let me compare it to you."

Yan Fei was confused. "Are you buying this for your dad? This isn’t suitable for the elderly, you know?"

"Idiot, come here. It’s for you." The woman selling clothes nearby laughed. Xu Xiaoyan blushed, stomped her foot, and dragged Yan Fei over.

Yan Fei saw how hard she was pulling him and quickly moved to her side, fearing that he would tear the clothes he was wearing if he held back any longer.

Once Xu Xiaoyan had finished comparing it to him, she felt that it was a good fit and urged Yan Fei to try it on.

When Yan Fei finished trying it on, the bargaining began.

During the haggling, things got so heated that they caused Yan Fei’s head to spin. The seller refused to reduce the price by even three yuan at the very end.

Yan Fei was almost falling asleep, yet Xu Xiaoyan continued to dicker away.

"Sigh... Stop bargaining, I have the money, if we don’t leave soon, we’ll miss the last bus home." Yan Fei was clearly impatient, he pulled at Xu Xiaoyan, whispering.

Although he was speaking softly, the saleswoman still heard him, Xu Xiaoyan quickly retorted, "No, I’m buying this for you. I don’t want your money."

She turned around and continued to negotiate with the saleswoman, "It’s just three yuan less, you can afford to make a bit less! If I give you all my money, I’ll really be broke!"

She rambled on and on until Yan Fei became so embarrassed his face turned red. After a while, the saleswoman seemed to lose interest in arguing with her.

Only when it was clear the saleswoman was not willing to lower the price did Xu Xiaoyan reluctantly turn to Yan fei, "Okay, she doesn’t want to sell it to me, let’s go, let’s check out another store!"

Yan Fei was so dazed by Xu Xiaoyan’s persistent haggling that he didn’t notice the sun had completely set by the time they left the store.

Seeing her dispirited, Yan Fei didn’t feel comfortable enough to comment on it. As he was preparing to follow her to the next store, the saleswoman called out to them from behind, "Okay, okay, come back! We’re about to close, I will give you a discount, it’s the last deal of the day."

At this, Xu Xiaoyan turned around, her face filled with unmistakable joy. "At the price I mentioned? Will you deduct three yuan?"

The shopkeeper laughed and nodded, "I’m losing money on this, you ought to come back!"

Xu Xiaoyan awkwardly approached and started pulling out money. Once Yan Fei saw it, he understood why she had haggled so hard over the price.

And not only did he figure it out, the shopkeeper did too.

The money Xu Xiaoyan pulled out was small change, including dimes, all neatly stacked, not more, not less, just enough to meet the final price she had agreed upon.

Now it was the shopkeeper’s turn to be embarrassed: "You really only have that much? I thought you were just haggling like everyone else! Well, let me get you a bag for that!"

Xu Xiaoyan went out the door with her clothes, not knowing whether she was happy or something. With a blushed face, she turned to Yan Fei and said, "This is for you, remember to cherish it."

Yan Fei, after taking the clothes was still puzzled, "Where did you get the money from?"

"None of your business!" She seemed to have eaten gunpowder today as she looked at Yan Fei’s bewildered expression and became even more furious. After speaking though, she realised that it wasn’t the most appropriate, so she explained, "Didn’t you bring me food? They all eat with me, and usually help me get food, so now I have money!"

That’s called having money? She couldn’t even afford a short-sleeved shirt!

Fortunately, Yan Fei didn’t voice that out loud, only thought it to himself.

He knew that she lived quite tightly, there was no way her parents would give her too much allowance. It was because Yan Fei often gave her tasty stuff, that she finally gained some weight.

The bit of money she had was probably saved from her meal money by letting others buy her meals. Otherwise, it would probably be till the cows come home before she had this much money!

And it goes without saying, Xu Xiaoyan is penny-pinching by nature, so after this incident, she’s probably going to be even more stingy! Who knows how long she’ll have to save up to get this much money again!

"I have clothes to wear." Yan Fei couldn’t think of anything else to say since she had bought him clothes, so he simply changed the subject.

The clothes you wear are yours, these are ones I bought for you, it’s different." Xu Xiaoyan shot him a look. "Anyway, I bought you clothes, that’s all you need to remember. Don’t say that I’ve never bought you clothes."

That statement was so odd that Yan Fei didn’t even want to think about it anymore.

As they walked, Xu Xiaoyan muttered, "Actually, I wanted to buy you a shirt, but it’s not for sale now, and even if it was, I couldn’t afford it, so I had to make do with this."

"Make do with what? Who buys a padded jacket in summer? Only a madman wears a padded jacket in the summer."

"You’re a little madman, so what if I bought you one? Anyway, I’ll buy it when I have money, and I’ll have you wear it whenever, hrmph!"

"..." Yan Fei had nothing to say. This was a crazy day for this girl and so he decided not to argue with her anymore. "It’s already dark out. With no taxis available, how are we going to get home?"

"No taxi is just perfect. We’ll walk home." Xu Xiaoyan was getting back to her normal self. "You always take shortcuts to and from places, don’t you? Let’s go see the path you take when delivering hot meals today."

"Walk... we also have to cross the river. Why don’t you go back to the dorms and stay the night, and we’ll walk tomorrow morning?" Yan Fei suggested with some hesitation.

"You can walk it all the time, why can’t I? Let’s walk back tonight, in the dark, that’s the plan!" The girl again started acting unruly.

"Ok!" Yan Fei was used to this. "Let’s go eat something first, then we can start off."

"Sure, let’s grab something to eat nearby!" Xu Xiaoyan nodded in agreement.

With dinner over, Yan Fei pulled out the money to pay the bill. As soon as they stepped outside, Xu Xiaoya started fussing again, "Wow, you’re loaded! So much money in your pocket — give me five dollars!"

"Ah?" Yan Fei was flabbergasted. Things had taken quite a swift turn and left him feeling a little disoriented.

"Give me five dollars! I’m getting my stationery ready for the college entrance exam. I plan on buying a better type of carbon ink, and..." The girl rattled off a long list, which left Yan Fei dumbstruck.

Dumbfoundedly, he handed over the money. After taking it, Xu Xiaoyan smugly said, "Remember, I bought you clothes today. From now on, when I buy something, I’m asking you for the money."

I didn’t ask you to buy me any! What kind of logic is this anyway?

Yan Fei pondered over it but didn’t utter a word. This was so baffling!

Right, she bought me a shirt and she haggled for it not wanting my money, and now she turns around demanding money as if it’s her right? What in the world is going on here?

To Yan Fei, this unreasonable girl seemed to be in a surprisingly good mood and even hummed softly when there were fewer people around on their way home.
