Chapter 113: Chapter 54: A Gambler Is Worse Than a Dog_1

Upon entering the cattle ranch, the four big dogs dashed towards him. Xiaohei was taken aback and Yan Fei quickly took him to a small courtyard inside. The room where he used to stay was now empty. He allowed Xiaohei to move in.

Ma Chao had already finished work and was heading home. He informed Old Cheng and Lin Yumei about Xiaohei’s ’background’, and then left.

Seeing Yan Fei about to leave after settling him down, Xiaohei still remembers the promise about food: "Hey, didn’t you say there would be food? I am too hungry to sleep."

"Oh!" Yan Fei thought for a moment and answered, "I live at the entrance after you’ve made your bed. I have food there."

Returning to his small kitchen, Yan Fei brought out a large basin of meat soup from Vegetable Garden Island while Xiaohei was out of sight. He ladled out a large bowl of soup into a pot over the flame. Then he poured the leftover soup into an outdoor basin. The four dogs pounced on it and began slurping it up.

When Xiaohei came running, Yan Fei had just served the heated soup. Despite the scalding soup, Xiaohei took a sip and was delighted, "You’re a man of taste, serving meat soup. It would be perfect if there was some meat in it."

Yan Fei ignored him, hastily cleaned the pot, and then returned to his room.

Shamelessly, Xiaohei followed him out and was about to enter his room. Suddenly, something felt wrong. He turned his head and was shocked, "Did you feed me dog food?"

Yan Fei was just about to start reading a worn-out book and was unhappy with what Xiaohei said, "What do you mean by dog food? Didn’t you see that the dogs ate cold food while yours was heated?"

Xiaohei looked more closely, and was suddenly filled with rage, "Whether it’s hot or not, it’s still the same thing, right? Geez, even the soup you used to feed the dogs had large pieces of meat, whereas mine doesn’t even have meat slices?"

Having dealt with Xiaohei’s constant bargaining the entire way, Yan Fei finally lost his patience, "Drink it or dump it. If you’re not drinking, pour it for the dogs, wash the bowl and sleep. Or compete with them, if you can win. You haven’t even worked yet and this meal is being given to you for free. What more do you want?"

Xiaohei held the bowl, appearing as if he was about to pour the soup out. Either due to the deliciousness of the soup or extreme hunger, he drew back, frustration on his face, "All this for losing a bit of money? I’m worse off than dogs!"

Yan Fei does not lack meat, but could he possibly give it to him? From the looks of it, he is such an unrepentant person, it seems he’ll require a few more lessons to learn his lesson.

Yan Fei ignored this shameless fellow. Yet, the fellow still came to irritate him, "Hey! You even read Li Bai’s Poetry Collection? I didn’t expect you to be such a studious person. You still value education?"

Yan Fei glared at him impatiently, "Eat and go sleep, or you’ll get a beating!"

Seeing Yan Fei getting angry, Xiaohei kept quiet for a moment, although he couldn’t resist, "I mean, if I leave now, you won’t really beat me, right? How about this, you lend me some money, and my brother will pay you back later. I will hide out for a couple of days. Once my dad cools down, I’ll be back. What do you say? I won’t bother you then."

While Yan Fei, lying on a worn-out rattan chair, was absorbed in his book, he replied without even looking at Xiaohei, "Try and you’ll find out."

Seeing this, Xiaohei had an idea, "Fine, I’ll take it back and drink it slowly, you hurry up and sleep. I’ll wake up early to work tomorrow."

As Xiaohei left, Yan Fei found it amusing: does he really think I’m a fool? Does he look like he’s preparing to work here?

In completion of the entrusted task, since Xiaohei had been handed over to him, Yan Fei decided to stay in for the night.

He let the four dogs loose to guard the surroundings while he strolled around Toad Island. Not long after he left, he heard the dogs barking.

Following the sound, he saw Xiaohei bending down with a bowl in his hands, shushing the dogs!

Wasn’t that the meat soup he said he would drink when he went back?

Yan Fei watched him trying hard to please the four big dogs. After all, he was the one who brought them back at night, so the dogs didn’t bite him. He carefully placed the bowl on the ground and watched as the four dogs sniffed it. They didn’t drink from it, but they didn’t bark at him anymore either - he immediately felt triumphant.

The walls here were hollow and short, easy to climb over. When the four dogs weren’t paying attention, he quickly climbed over the wall. On the other side of the wall, he waved gleefully at the dogs and said, "Bye-bye!"

Then he began to sneak along the walls to the main road. Instead of going back to town, he sprung to his feet and ran along the highway.

Yan Fei had every intention of messing with him but didn’t immediately go after him. Instead, he watched him run from a bird’s-eye view. The man ran for about two to three miles before he slowed down and turned back to shout, "You think you can hold me? No way! If you dare, come and catch me..."

The satisfaction in his voice amused Yan Fei, who was watching him from the sky.

The man, not even twenty years old and used to running, had good stamina. The roads were mostly deserted at night, and he had no money. Even if a car passed by, he didn’t hail it. He walked and ran in alternation and sprinted straight to the county town after covering more than twenty miles.

Only occasional vehicles passed by, with virtually no pedestrians. Along the way, he would sometimes yell out loud to cheer himself up. On reaching the big bridge beyond the county town’s toll station, he even peed off the bridge, shouting as he did so, "The sky is vast and allows the birds to fly freely, the sea is boundless, it let the fish jump, how could a little ranch restrain me!"

"Is the ranch so small?" A voice inquired from behind just as he finished shouting.

"My God..." The young man shivered, and without pulling up his trousers, he turned his head.

"Hey, hey, feeling tired? If not, let’s go back! After all, you still have to get up early to shovel cow dung tomorrow!" Yan Fei laughed heartily.

"I was waiting for you..." Yan Fei had only spoken half of his sentence when the man pulled up his trousers, turned around, and immediately started running.

Running past the bridge, he took a detour and disappeared into a large residential area, turning haphazardly and causing chaos in every household. Soon, he realized something was off. He turned back and laughed, "I thought you could do better, but now I’ve lost you! Who are you trying to scare?"

After muttering to himself, he hummed a few times. But when he turned around to leave, he almost jumped, "Why are you here?"

"To take you back and shovel cow dung." Yan Fei answered as if it was the most natural thing.

"I refuse to go back, I’d rather die." Seeing he couldn’t run away, the man started looking around, looking for a way to play dirty.

"Even if you refuse, you have to go back. You’ve fed the dogs with the food prepared for you and thrown my bowl on the ground. Go and clean it up. That bowl will be your food bowl from now on." Yan Fei completely ignored his antics.

"Alright! Come on! Let’s see how tough you are! I’m not afraid of you!" You could tell the man was bluffing. He happened to be standing near a corner where a wooden stick had been abandoned. He picked it up, swung it around to build up his courage.

Yan Fei took two steps forward, grabbed the stick, and snatched it away effortlessly, "Hurry up and go back. Even if you get beaten up, you still have to go back. You might as well just go back now."

"I won’t return, not even if I die. What’s the point in forcing me? If you leave me alone, I could return a few days later once my father calms down, right? Do you insist on dragging me to the ranch to labor for you?" Seeing that the hard approach wasn’t working, he tried a softer one.

Yan Fei didn’t fall for it, "Are you leaving, or should I start hitting you?"

"Go ahead and hit me! I’ll scream for the police then. You planning on committing murder on this late-night? Anyway, I can’t walk anymore, I’m exhausted - figure it out yourself!" Both the direct and indirect approaches didn’t work on him, and he resorted to shirking. He kept on blabbering until he sat down on the ground.

"Hey... what are you... Ah, slow down... That hurts..." Yan Fei didn’t waste any time. He stepped forward and grabbed him by the ankle. With a quick turn of his hand, he flipped him over and started dragging him away.
