Chapter 109: Chapter 50 Old Turtle Soup_1
Generally, dogs don’t eat the mice they catch; they just kill them and leave them as trophies. If the owner rewards them for it, they will quickly become adept at catching mice.
Another creature that’s good at catching mice is a snake. Rural families usually don’t kill snakes in their homes as they guard the house. Even if a snake occasionally strays into the middle of the courtyard, they will only move it to a corner of the yard.
Early in the morning, when Old Cheng and Lin Yumei got up, Yan Fei had already strung up a dozen or so mice.
These were not only from around the feed shed. After tasting the sweet success, the few dogs also patrolled the outer areas, eliminating a few field mice which were obvious. The sun had risen, but the dogs, now full, were still patrolling out there!
Da Hei and Er Hei finally learned to catch mice in the latter part of the night. Hunting was their natural instinct, and besides, they were part of a four-dog team that could easily trap and intercept the mice. The minute a mouse emerged from its hole and was spotted, Yan Fei didn’t even need to block off its retreat like before, the dogs could handle it alone.
In rural areas where people don’t keep cats, they usually use rat poison. But rat poison often accidentally kills dogs and chickens, and even children who come into contact with it. So now, people are quite cautious about using it, often skipping it if possible.
Given that they raised so many things in the cattle farm, they cannot use rat poison. Luckily, they had these few dogs who were perfectly suited to this task.
Catching mice can be a game for dogs, that they can play both day and night, turning out to be even more diligent than cats.
In the afternoon, Yan Fei woke up from a nap to see Da Hei and Er Hei cheerfully running over, each carrying a mouse to show off their kills. These two were not competitive eaters, probably because since they were small, they had always had their fill of food. Whenever meat was available, they ate together, and even if they occasionally fought over a bone, it was all part of the game, and not a real struggle for food.
At noon, Yan Fei began to clean up the old turtle that had been accidentally caught the day before.
He slit the turtle’s belly open in a large cross pattern, cleaned out the innards, and then scalded it in hot water for a while. This was mainly to remove the outer layer of white membrane to get rid of the fishy smell and, of course, to scrape off the outer layer of the shell to ensure there was no dirt. As for the turtle’s skirt, it wasn’t necessary to remove it, it was edible.
Then he added seasonings and placed it in a pot with water to be steamed.
Some folks would bleed the turtle first when making turtle soup as it makes the soup clearer, but in rural areas it’s said that doing so would drain the "vital energy", and that unbled soup has better nutritional effects.
There are differing opinions about this; it all depends on individual preferences.
After simmering on high heat for half a day, he served a small bowl to each of the three people on the cattle farm. The rest of it was packed up to be taken away.
He was bringing it to Xu Xiaoyan at school.
Undoubtedly, the soup had a solid tonic effect, but Yan Fei really didn’t need this kind of nutrition.
Actually, there wasn’t just turtle soup, but also tripe soup, and braised pork intestines.
The Iguanodon’s tripe wasn’t thin strips anymore – Yan Fei had to chop it into large chunks. The pork intestines were also the same; even though Yan Fei tried hard to cut them into smaller pieces, they still looked chunky.
The presentation wasn’t attractive, but both items tasted refreshing, smooth and yummy. Just think about the kind of food Iguanodon eats every day and you’ll understand.
The climate within the dinosaur world was suitable, vegetation grew very quickly. The Iguanodons only picked the tenderest leaves and branches to eat, so the taste definitely wouldn’t be bad.
If the heart, liver, lungs and such weren’t chopped and stir-fried, they would be tasteless to eat. Yan Fei only tasted a few bites, then chopped the rest, stir-fried it with green peppers and brought it over too.
Xu Xiaoyan was overjoyed. The girl saw Yan Fei bringing over a small pot and several bowls. Looking at each one of them, she didn’t even bother with rice, and just pointed at these dishes and filled herself up.
"Yan Xiaofei, what is this?" Pinching a large piece of pork intestine, this girl couldn’t figure out what it was and had to ask Yan Fei.
Yan Fei was sipping Old Turtle Soup bit by bit, grinning and keeping silent. Several girls around who were all ears appeared somewhat disappointed, seemingly tasting the deliciousness of something unknown once again.
These girls were no longer teasing Xu Xiaoyan now. They had no choice but to accept the food and drinks from Yan Fei with nothing but envy. Most of their classmates from the county seat would be occasionally sent food from home.
However, the food delivered was often just chicken or pork ribs. Who else but Yan Fei would come up with various dishes and never be stingy?
"Well-seasoned, taste good, this is good, not greasy at all!" Several girls led by Xiao Wen and Jingjing, all with picky eaters by now, could even manage to comment amidst their meal.
The food indeed tasted wonderful, not that they would admit otherwise if it wasn’t. Those student ate collective cooked cabbage and radishes, drank soup with rice flour every day, and the noodles they had were as sticky as the paste, their diet was scarcely better than pigs’ in rural areas. Even the mere smell of oil would count as delicacy now, let alone actual meat.
Even the lungs and hearts Yan Fei didn’t fancy were deemed delicious by these girls once stir-fried.
The school was rather helpless in this regards. Better-tasting food would mean higher prices. Even a dime hike per meal would be unaffordable for most students from rural areas. Despite the mundane food offered, there were students who could only eat buns with their own salted vegetables.
After the meal, the girls were still asking Yan Fei, "Hero Yan, when will you visit us again?"
The way they anticipated was like wives waiting for their husbands to return. Xu Xiaoyan stepped in and saved Yan Fei from the awkwardness, "He’s busy at the cattle farm. How can he find so much free time? He goes to school, he’s busy every day. It’s not bad to spare time twice a week."
After enjoying the meal, the girls even competed to wash and scrub the pots and pans. They reluctantly bid Yan Fei farewell at the school gate.
Yan Fei did not leave empty-handed. He was given a small bottle of chili oil. The girls were not eating for free all the time. Sometimes when they went home for the weekend, they would bring back some salted vegetables and would always leave some for Yan Fei. Irrespective of the value, it was the gratitude that mattered.
After leaving school, he snuck into a secluded place. In a flash, the pots and pans disappeared from his hands, leaving only a bottle of chili oil, with two big fish and a bag of island vegetables added. He then went to his parents’ house.
Having dropped off the chili oil, fish, and vegetables, and played with his younger brother for a while, it had turned dark. After chatting with his parents for a bit, he returned to the cattle farm.
His parents could not do anything about him now. They knew he never took the car when shuttled back and forth, so apart from reminding him to be careful on the road, they would try to find some supplies from home for him to take back.
When he got back to the cattle farm, he patrolled the area and fed the four dogs before going to bed.
He woke up refreshed at dawn, did a round of boxing outside the door, and after eating and drinking his fill, he embarked on his new journey.
Taking advantage of the absence of other pterosaurs in the island sky, he transformed into the Change Winged Dragon, unfolded his wings, and darted towards a new island.
There were only two islands left nearby. The rest were probably far away because he couldn’t see them since he dared not fly too high in the dinosaur world.
One island was big and the other small. Yan Fei originally wanted to choose the larger one, but before he could get there, he saw a few black spots shooting out from the clouds over that island. He immediately changed his course and headed for the smaller island.
Calling it a small island was an overstatement. When he flew closer, he realized it was probably about the same size as Cow Breeding Island.
With the exploration experience from Cow Breeding Island, he didn’t hurry this time to view the entire island. Instead, he quickly found a tall tree, transformed into a cinerous vulture, and landed there.
