Chapter 108: Chapter 49: Dog Catching a Mouse_1

Though it had bitten a bit further back than initially aimed for, its solid grip had sealed the Iguanodon’s fate.

The Iguanodon tried to break free from the Terrestrisuchus’s jaw, but its sharp teeth had embedded deeply into the creature’s flesh. After a few shakes of the Terrestrisuchus’s head, the wound was ripped apart, blood spurted out, and a strange sound came from the Iguanodon’s throat before it collapsed to the ground.

The other Iguanodons, shocked by the sudden attack, reacted by running away. After they had gotten some distance, realizing there was only one predator, they attempted to rescue their companion. But seeing it already collapsed, and smell of blood permeating the air, they quickly gave up on the rescue, retreating farther away and rejoined their herd.

Soon, the Iguanodon fell silent, its massive body lying quietly on the ground, its life had left it.

Yan Fei approached with a bone cleaver in hand.

Eating meat was definitely awesome, but butchering them wore out the blade so much. Fortunately, there were enough supplies left in the blacksmith’s shop. Otherwise, he would’ve run out of knives.

But now, as his skills improved, so did his efficiency with the blade, no longer wasting it like in the old days.

Eating meat all the time was boring, so this time he performed a thorough disembowelment on the Iguanodon and took some of its internal organs.

Typically, these things never made it to the table, but well-prepared, they could be uniquely delicious. This Iguanodon was healthy, so eating its organs shouldn’t pose any problems. Hot and Sour Tripe Soup, Braised Pork Intestines, both were delicacies, but these dishes were a hassle to prepare, unlike the heart and liver which could be thrown into the pot right after being removed. However, the heart and liver were clearly not as flavorful as the former dishes.

The cleaning took an awful lot of time and wasn’t easy, but it was worth it since it cooked up a large pot.

A few dumb puppies, oblivious to the disgusting sight, wagged their chubby tails nonstop next to Yan Fei’s feet, their bellies brimming with food. Once satiated, they started causing a ruckus, seeming to have an endless amount of energy.

After he had his fill and it was almost dark, Yan Fei went to the river and caught two fish.

His luck today was extraordinarily good. Just when he was about to leave, not wanting to wait for the third fish, a little head popped out from the silt at the bottom of the river.

Ha ha!

Such a big Old Turtle! Who knows how many years it had been enjoying a leisurely life in the river. Now its days were numbered.

Carrying two fishes and one Old Turtle, he walked along the riverbank back to the cattle ranch. Even Old Cheng couldn’t stand his indiscipline any longer. Seeing Yan Fei’s gleeful mood, he joked, "School these days is quite capable. You come back from a day of school with two fishes and oh, that Old Turtle must weigh at least two or three catties!"

Yan Fei chuckled, got a big basin, filled it with fresh water, and tossed the Old Turtle into it.

Just as he was about to leave, Lin Yumei who was preparing the fishes called out to him, "Xiao Fei, should we have a cat in the ranch? These mice are too much! They’ve killed a newly bought chick. Now they even dare to play around in the feed shed in broad daylight."

"Alright! I’ll check later if there’s anyone having kittens to spare." No way, am I letting mice mess around in my cattle ranch. I am someone who kills dinosaurs like they’re chickens.

Joining the conversation, Old Cheng added, "Don’t you have several dogs? Train them when you’re free. They can be more effective in catching mice than cats."

Despite enjoying the taste of fish, Yan Fei preferred big hunks of meat. He took a few bites during dinner and then lost his appetite. It was only because of Lin Yumei’s cooking he even bothered to try the fish.

He went to the paper factory again in the evening. It seemed they were not planning to operate at night for the time being, so he just made a roundabout and returned.

Such a large factory wouldn’t close just because of rumors. After a while, when the rumors of monsters faded, he would come back to wreak havoc again. One day, he might catch the fish polluting the river. So he decided, every now and then, he would come disturb them.

Back at the farm, all four dogs were gathered.

The four buddies, starving with their bellies sunken, cheerily run over, only to find an empty feeding bowl where there should be a big pot full of meat soup as usual.

So with the four buddies in tow, Yan Fei elected to stake out the feed shed. The feed shed was right next to the chicken coop, and the chicks didn’t know any fear, remaining aflutter and chirping since they thought it was feeding time.

The mice were quite numerous, and didn’t wait long before spotting a plump one strutting out from the feed pile, heading towards the kitchen along the corner of the wall.

Yan Fei shouted, taking the lead to sprint towards it, blocking its retreat.

The four big dogs didn’t know what was happening, but luckily, they weren’t that dumb. Upon seeing Yan Fei chasing the mouse, they realized and started to give chase too.

Though the mouse was plump, thanks to its small size, it could scamper about east and west. But since Yan Fei had cut off its retreat, it could only escape towards the open area.

At this point, the difference was clear, San Hei and Si Hei were noticeably more experienced, teaming up with Yan Fei to flank and intercept the mouse. Meanwhile, Da Hei and Er Hei, the two plump dogs, were following cluelessly just trailing behind the mouse.

Yan Fei could have stepped on the mouse twice, but he intentionally let it go, waiting until San Hei pinned down the mouse with a paw before he moved in and killed it.

He disappeared for a moment, returning with a big, aromatic piece of meat, which he handed to San Hei.

All the commotion woke up Old Cheng and Lin Yumei, who couldn’t sleep any longer. With Cheng heading out in his shirt, after spotting Yan Fei training the dogs to catch mice and having brief small talk, Yan Fei urged him to return to his house.

In rural areas, many dogs are trained to catch mice, and many are so proficient that they render cats ’unemployed’. So this was nothing unusual.

The other three dogs, seeing San Hei enjoying his meat, wagged their tails enviously. However, Yan Fei was completely indifferent towards their envy. After rewarding San Hei, he hung up the mouse and returned to the feed shed to wait.

Dogs are intelligent creatures, now that they saw San Hei got a reward for catching a mouse, they began to spring into action.

Especially San Hei and Si Hei, who were noticeably more experienced. After waiting for a while, they actually started sniffing around on their own.

By the time San Hei and Si Hei began to dig into the feed pile, Da Hei and Er Hei had no idea what was happening!

The young ones, Da Hei and Er Hei, were still clueless compared to the older and more conscious San Hei and Si Hei. However, they were in luck. After San Hei and Si Hei toiled for a long time, unearthing a large hole in the feed pile, a mouse suddenly darted out from the other side.

It was headed straight for Da Hei and Er Hei.

The two stumbled onto it, clawing and swiping but not able to catch it. In desperation, they even tried biting it. Luckily, San Hei and Si Hei were quick to respond, hurrying over to encircle the mouse. Otherwise, the mouse would’ve escaped.

In the end, it was Si Hei who caught the mouse. Just when San Hei was about to snatch it, Si Hei fiercely stole it away.

Yan Fei didn’t care about their competition. Since they were from the same family, he promptly rewarded Si Hei with meat.

Da Hei and Er Hei became anxious now, starting to sniff around and look for mice.

Soon, the third mouse was caught by San Hei and Si Hei, rewarding them once again with meat. They were ecstatic. Finally, Da Hei and Er Hei seem to have understood, and took cues from San Hei and Si Hei. They stopped looking around and started their training.
