Chapter 101: Chapter 42 Beware of Monsters_1
Hearing the footsteps drawing nearer, Xiao Li wanted to do something. Still, he found his legs had turned to jelly, and he had no idea what he should do.
"Hummmahhh..."
The footsteps stopped, and the roar sounded again. Xiao Li knew unmistakably that the owner of this sound was right outside the main gate. He felt immense relief, thankful that Brother Dazhi had wisely locked the gates every day on time; otherwise, this monster would have broken in by now.
As the thought crossed his mind, he heard a loud bang, the large iron gates trembled a moment before crashing to the ground.
"Hummmahhh..."
Bang... Bang... Creak...
After a growl, there came more footsteps, and Xiao Li saw a head larger than his whole body enter the factory, followed by a giant beast strolling in. Its legs, as thick as pillars, stepped onto the fallen large gate, flattening the steel pipes on the iron doorframe.
Everything outside suddenly darkened, and nothing could be seen inside, whether through the windows or the door. All Xiao Li could see was the massive grey body of the beast. When it finally moved past the small building, the light from the lamp hanging on the large door opposite the cabin shone in, lighting up the small room as if the sun had risen again.
Xiao Li couldn’t clearly recall what happened next. All he remembered was a creature larger than two office buildings at the factory entrance came in. The creature stood in the yard for a while, moved around the office building, appeared to bite off a holly tree and then leisurely left.
The pounding footstep sounds came again, the monster had gone, and it had walked away. The footstep sounds gradually vanished.
The factory was quiet again, with only the unsuspecting workers in the distant workshop continuing to labor amidst the roar of machines.
It was only after quite some time that Xiao Li came back to his senses. He tugged on Dazhi beside him, swallowed hard, and voiced hoarsely, "Brother Dazhi, I ... just then ... was I dreaming?"
However, as he tugged, Dazhi suddenly went limp and unexpectedly fell to the ground. Xiao Li was taken aback, "Brother Dazhi, don’t scare me. I didn’t mean to use such force...no, I didn’t use any force..."
Dazhi’s eyes were wide open. After hearing him, his eyeballs rolled around for a brief moment as if he were awakening from a dream. Dazhi finally talked to Xiao Li, sounding like it was dream speech: "Xiao Li, you saw it too?"
"I saw, I saw!" Xiao Li nodded repeatedly.
After hearing Xiao Li’s words, Dazhi didn’t react for a while. He suddenly slapped his face hard twice, leaving several fingerprints. Following that, with a "sucking" sound, he covered his face.
"Ptoo!" After spewing a mouthful of bloody spit, Dazhi finally came to his senses. "We are still alive, right?"
Xiao Li was startled by his reaction. He pinched his own thigh forcefully, and then through gritted teeth, he replied repeatedly, "Yes, yes, yes, still alive..."
"Call the police, call the police, there’s a monster..." Dazhi suddenly sprang up and reached for the telephone.
"Brother Dazhi, the monster is gone, it’s gone, don’t scare me. I’m afraid!" Xiao Li was bewildered by his chain of reactions and yelled at him.
Upon hearing Xiao Li’s yelling, Dazhi withdrew his hand that he had already extended towards the phone and murmured to himself, "Yes, yes, yes, the monster is gone..."
The two of them fell silent.
After a long while, Xiao Li suddenly blurted out, "I quit! I worked at this damn factory seeking stability, and now even that’s gone. Screw this!"
Dazhi, who had been staring into space, was startled by Xiao Li’s words and hesitated for a moment, "Xiao Li, about what you said earlier, finding a paying job elsewhere... is that certain?"
Both of them wanted to go home immediately, but the recent unexpected event had frightened them so much that they didn’t dare to step out. They stayed put until dawn, shivering as they spoke, unable to sleep the entire night. It was not until workers from outside started to come for their shifts that the two dared to step out and look around.
The workers were pointing at the collapsed gate, and it was only when the two of them saw it that they believed that what happened last night was not a dream. Their first reaction was relief that they were still alive, so much so that they almost burst into tears.
The small boss of the factory was just getting off his car in the distance, directing a few passing workers to lift and remove the collapsed gate.
The small boss is a younger relative of the big boss and spends much more time in the factory. He glanced at them coldly when he saw them but didn’t bother with them.
Even after directing the workers to lift the gate and driving into the factory, he still ignored them.
The two of them, in a daze, felt that the small boss, who usually seemed frightening, was not scary at all.
It wasn’t until they returned home in a dreamlike state that they remembered they had talked a lot and discussed many things last night. But they couldn’t remember a thing except quitting their jobs to work elsewhere, but they completely forgot to mention it to the small boss when they came back in the morning...
The monster in the Sunshine Paper Mill was the Iguanodon that Yan Fei had transformed into.
Initially, he just wanted to roar from a distance to scare people, but after roaring for a while, there was no reaction from inside the factory. It was then he realized that the noise from the machines in the factory was much louder than his roar, so no one probably heard him.
A little frustrated, Yan Fei then stomped his feet and headed up.
Anyway, I won’t transform into an Iguanodon anymore, so what if people see me, I’ll go to the gate and scare the gatekeeper who drove me out earlier.
It was only at the gate that he found out that they had locked it as soon as he left. How infuriating!
He simply smashed open the gate.
Once inside, he deliberately ignored the people behind the small window and ran straight in. After a spin inside, he was about to leave when he noticed there were a few people in the small building. He simply bit off a holly tree to show off before leaving.
Then he turned into a cinereous Vulture and waited in the sky to watch the chaos unfold in the factory. But after flying for a while, there was no commotion inside, no one came out of the office building or the room at the gate, the factory’s machines were still roaring, the chimney was still spewing black smoke, the drainage was still bubbling out black water. He felt like going in and running a lap again.
Fortunately, he had already destroyed their gate, and he felt much better.
You stopped me from eating good fish, and made me catch fish for half a day only to throw them away, so I destroyed your gate, none of us are going to have it easy!
He was too lazy to continue the havoc, and feeling a bit hungry, he went home to find food.
Of course, he didn’t know that his transformation into an Iguanodon had scared the two people in the gatehouse and those working the night shift in the office building. They were all huddled up like winter sparrows. Those who weren’t already incontinent were considered brave, providing enough bragging material for days. At that moment, not to mention going out, everyone was so terrified that their bodies were soft, and anyone who could stand was a hero.
As usual, after circling around the cattle ranch, he returned home and had a grand celebration with food and drink. He played with a few dogs for a while. When he was ready to go to bed, Yan Fei couldn’t sleep tossing and turning.
No way around it, his heart wasn’t calm, feeling a little excited and a little scared.
Anyway, he couldn’t sleep.
After fussing around for a while, he was rummaging through his old "treasures" in the cave on Vegetable Garden Island and found the calligraphy brush and ink from his primary school. He spread a large white paper and wrote four scrabbly characters: "Purge the wicked for the people."
Then he hung it in the room, turned on the light, and laughed while looking at his "masterpiece".
(These Chapters are purely personal grievances. Without the paper mill eradicated, my heart would not be at ease. Only those who grew up along the river from childhood understand this feeling; blue skies, white clouds, beaches and rivers, catching fish, crabs, and loaches in the river every day, they detest polluting the river water. Although messing with the paper mill may not receive praise, at least it makes one feel better. If someone really had the power to transform, I believe they would do the same.)
