Chapter 100: Chapter 41 Monster Attack_1

Even though it was dark outside, the machinery in the paper factory was still roaring, signalling that it seemed they were going to work the night shift.

Stepping into the factory, he feigned a turn around, but apart from the chaotic noise of the machinery, he noticed nothing. He didn’t expect such a factory to be too concerned with cleanliness anyway. The factory floor had been swept, but trash was still piled up in the neglected corners. Amongst this, the chimney belching black smoke and large pipes disposing of wastewater were quite noticeable.

The chimney’s soot wouldn’t reach Sancha River town, but Yan Fei was incredibly annoyed by the sight of the wastewater pipes.

Just as he got close to the main gate, a horse-faced tough guy called out to him: "Hey, kid, do you work here? If you don’t, get moving! I’m about to close up!"

Although Yan Fei had already planned to leave, there’s a difference between leaving on one’s own and being chased out, right? Disconcerted, he mumbled out a reply and skedaddled.

Having already inspected this factory from the air, Yan Fei knew it was quite far from the town, enveloped in wilderness! After wandering around the outside for a while, Yan Fei felt like making mischief.

Being so irritated, causing a bit of petty destruction to cheer himself up wouldn’t hurt. But he had to think about how to cause that havoc. The idea of throwing a bomb was laughable, plus he didn’t have one anyway.

Wandering around for a while, Yan Fei suddenly remembered the man he had scared shitless two nights ago and an idea clicked in his head.

You make me unhappy, so I’ll scare the hell out of this damned factory. It seemed like a good idea.

How exactly would he execute this plan though? He had to consider it carefully. He couldn’t just transform into a Pterosaur and fly around in the factory. That’d be way too conspicuous! What if people there weren’t scared or what if there was someone with a shotgun ready to take a shot at him?

After pondering for a while, he got bored standing in the wilderness. He squatted on Vegetable Garden Island and plucked a large watermelon. He split it in half and, armed with a spoon, started to eat it while he contemplated his plan.

By the time half the watermelon was finished, he still hadn’t figured out how to spook them. Just then, he heard a monstrous roar in the distance. Yan Fei tossed the remaining watermelon and a lightbulb went on.

Sunshine Paper Mill was the name of the paper factory he was observing. Although it was named Sunshine, it felt like people living around it could hardly see the real sunshine anymore.

The constant pollution not only gave the surrounding people bitterness, but even the factory workers harboured discontent all the time. If it were not for the salary, who would want to work in such an environment?

The stench lingering in their noses, the sights their eyes beheld, the noise deafening their ears, everything made their days torturous.

So, Dazhi, who worked as a gatekeeper at the factory, felt feeble and crestfallen. After having driven out a wandering kid, he locked the main gate and returned to his guardhouse, lost in thought.

Sitting idle and lost in thought was what his job was. People were constantly working in the factory, day and night, so there was no worry about outsiders stealing stuff. The security, including the gatekeepers, wasn’t actually guarding against outsiders but the workers inside, who might steal the factory’s products.

Being a gatekeeper paid well among the factory jobs since it was a job that tended to upset people. However, only after working did they realize the difficulties; the factory workers were all from the surrounding area, and standing up to anyone would not end well.

Even the thieves in the countryside adhered to the principle of not harming their own people, choosing to steal from other villages instead. What good would come from upsetting their own people? Regardless of the salary, the reputation in the surrounding area would stink, and who knew what backbiting they would face!

"Brother Dazhi, do you think we can also find a job? I heard that you can earn a lot of money out there!" Xiao Li, who was similarly daydreaming, suddenly suggested.

"Find a job? Apart from physical strength, we’re not good at anything else. What can we do out there? Only the educated can earn money outside, and we big brutes, who can’t even find our way out, still dream of making money?" Dazhi replied sourly. This Xiao Li was exactly like this, always fantasizing and causing unnecessary trouble.

"I don’t care, I can be a bricklayer too! I was afraid of hardship before and didn’t want to do construction work, but now I understand. I’m still young and not making use of my strength will take its toll eventually!" Xiao Li, as he was speaking, began to daydream again. "Maybe I’ll make money! Then, like a big boss, I can own a factory, drive a Volkswagen Beetle, marry a college girl, and go wherever I want with my wife. We could dine out every day, just thinking about it makes me ecstatic!"

"Ecstatic? I think you’re obsessed with getting a wife, thinking it’s easy to earn money. At least working in this factory provides some stability, but if something happens outside, no one would even know if you’re sold off." Dazhi poured cold water on his hopes relentlessly.

"Stability? Apart from stability, what can this factory give? The stench is horrid; even drinking tea has lost its charm!" Xiao Li said, standing up and picking up the thermos to add some warm water to his teacup. "Brother Dazhi, should I add some hot water for you?"

Two cups of hot tea were steaming on the table, the tea froth still swirling.

Suddenly, a peculiar sound wafted faintly from somewhere.

It was like someone was forcing a muffled nasal sound from their throat.

"Brother Dazhi, did you hear something?" Xiao Li immediately became vigilant.

"What sound? I don’t hear anything." Dazhi was not interested in engaging with Xiao Li’s nonsense, he merely stared blankly at the swirling froth in the teacup.

Another muffled growl pierced the air, Dazhi subconsciously muttered, "Perhaps it’s someone’s cow bellowing?"

"Cows? Who would be herding cows around our factory?" Xiao Li expressed disbelief. After a moment, another growling sound filled the air, causing him to become tense. "Brother Dazhi, you don’t suppose it’s some monster, do you?"

"Bullshit monster. You’ve probably been reading too many storybooks." Dazhi retorted disdainfully.

"Aarrgh..." Another growling sound filled their ears. This growl was exceptionally deep, possibly echoing from far away, yet it seemed to reverberate deep within their souls, its vibrations sending chills down their spines.

"Brother Dazhi, could there really be a monster?" Xiao Li’s voice started trembling.

"Bullshit monster, it could be someone causing trouble. Don’t you know how many people around here hate this smoke-belching factory and want to tear it down? I’ll go check." Dazhi rose from his seat, picking up a flashlight from the table. "Come on, let’s see who’s messing around."

"Aarrgh..."

Xiao Li just got up, barely reaching for the flashlight, when another creepy growl echoed. He shivered and involuntarily sat back down, his voice trembling, "Br...Brother Dazhi, I feel like... the sound is coming towards us."

Bang... Bang... Bang...

Before Dazhi could comment, he felt the echoing footstep sounds drawing nearer, as though a gigantic creature was approaching them.

His face instantly turned pale.

"Aarrgh..."

A guttural roar filled the air; they could hear even the newspaper pasted on the window crinkling like it was reacting to the terrifying sound. It seemed like everything in the room was vibrating.

With every footstep sounding closer, each one seemed to echo within their hearts, making them quiver in sync.

"Br...Brother Dazhi, there r-really... is a monster..." Xiao Li stammered.

Having finished speaking, he didn’t hear Dazhi’s response. Turning his head, Xiao Li could only watch as Dazhi trembled like a leaf, staring at the table with a pallid complexion.

Following Dazhi’s gaze, Xiao Li noticed the tea froth in the two teacups on the table. With each echoing footstep, the froth was rhythmically pulsing in tune with the rippling water.

As if to tell them, this was not a dream.
