Chapter 844: Chapter 862: Side Story - Suddenly Missing You (6)
After parting ways with Elijah Smith, Christopher Bell drove aimlessly through Bellshire City. Every place he went to brought back memories of his past with Ella Adams. It was only when he parked his car at the entrance of Starhaven University at three in the morning that he realized how much of their past and memories were contained in this city.
Checking the time, it was midnight. Starhaven University’s entrance had already closed, and the outside shops across the street had their lights turned off. Only a few faint yellow streetlights illuminated the nearby roads. He sat in his car, looking dazed, staring at the quiet street lined with Paulownia trees. Suddenly, he saw images of the days they had once walked hand-in-hand.
Five years... such a long time. Even the deepest love should have been completely worn away, and the most intense longing should have dissipated into emptiness. Yet, the girl named Ella Adams was becoming clearer and more profound in his heart.
At the time when he gave up on their relationship, he was decisive and resolute. In reality, he had always been the one who was indecisive and unable to let go.
After a while, Elijah Smith drove on skillfully, eventually parking the car in front of an apartment building. He got out of the car, looked up, and counted the floors. When he reached the twelfth floor, he fixed his gaze on the dark apartment.
The surroundings were quiet and filled with tree shadows. The wind blew, bringing with it the sound of rustling leaves. A few green leaves spun as they fell to the ground.
How did he end up coming here, Elijah Smith wondered?
Ella Adams’ old apartment.
The apartment where he and Ella Adams went from acquaintances to lovers, to finally living together.
After five years, the apartment looked a bit worn down, but the environment around it had not changed much. Just that the two lovers from the past had become the most familiar strangers to each other now.
Elijah Smith took the elevator to the familiar floor, standing at the familiar doorstep. The lush green plants were no longer there, nor was the adorable bear-shaped sign that said "Please smile."
He took out the key from his pocket and inserted it into the lock, surprisingly discovering that it still worked. Overjoyed, he opened the door, found the light switch on the wall, and turned it on. The interior was exactly as he remembered it, with everything remaining the same. Even the couple’s tableware that they had bought together was neatly placed on the open kitchen counter.
However, it looked like no one had been living there for a long time, as dust was heavy in the apartment.
He closed the door, walked in, and noticed that the green plants were still there but had withered, their soil turned rock-hard.
The bedsheet and quilt cover remained the same set as when he left. Even the inner pants he had folded for her stayed in their original place, untouched.
He turned around, walked out of the bedroom, and entered the kitchen. Opening the thermos, he found moldy and rotten soy milk inside.
It appeared that ever since he left that day, she had never returned.
A wave of inexplicable sadness welled up in Elijah Smith’s heart. He walked around the apartment, did a full circle, then went back to the bedroom and lay down on the dirty bed. Raising his hand to block the lamp light, he closed his eyes.
It turned out to be a night of pleasant dreams, the deepest sleep he had had in five years.
