Chapter 806: Chapter 824: Misfortune of Being Just One Step Behind (14)
The Public Security Bureau was always a gloomy world, the eerie quietness pervading within. Elijah Smith walked with an unhurried pace, his footsteps echoing around his ears.
Pushing open the door of an office room, Elijah Smith hadn’t spoken yet when a young man looked up and said, "Hello, how can I help you?"
"Hello." Elijah Smith’s voice was a bit strained as he walked over to the young man and moistened his lips before saying, "I’m here to turn myself in. Who do I speak to?"
The young man couldn’t imagine how someone who looked bright and handsome could be a criminal, so he hesitated but then stood up and said, "What type of crime are you turning yourself in for?"
"Business..." Elijah Smith paused before adding, "Economic."
The young man nodded, then sat down and made a phone call, relaying everything Elijah Smith had told him. After hanging up, he said to Elijah Smith, "Please follow me."
The young man led Elijah Smith to an interrogation room at the far end of the Public Security Bureau and pointed inside, saying, "Sir, please wait inside."
Elijah Smith nodded, and the young man left. He stood at the doorstep, his gaze drifting over the metal plaque engraved with the words "Interrogation Room," before walking in.
Not even a minute had passed when several sets of footsteps approached the door, which was then pushed open as two serious-looking men entered, followed by the young man who had guided Elijah Smith. The young man placed three cups of tea on the table and exited the room.
Both of the remaining men were dressed in work uniforms, their five-pointed star badges on their shoulders particularly eye-catching. They took their seats and gestured to the chair opposite them, saying to Elijah Smith, "Please sit."
Elijah Smith didn’t speak, and as he sat down, he inspected the red wooden stool. Countless people had sat on this same stool and confessed their crimes, polishing the surface to an impeccable shine.
Elijah Smith swallowed, then took his seat.
One of the men picked up his teacup, took a sip, and asked, "What’s your name?"
"Elijah Smith."
The other man, equipped with a pen and a recorder, began to take notes and record the conversation.
"Do you have your ID card with you?"
"Yes." Elijah Smith took out his wallet from his waist, removed his ID card, and handed it over.
The man asking the questions looked at the ID card for a moment, confirmed the identity of Elijah Smith, and then handed it to the man taking notes, saying, "Register his information."
The interrogation room was peaceful, only the sound of the man’s pen scratching across the paper could be heard.
After a while, the man asking the questions saw that the note-taker had paused, so he turned to Elijah Smith and said, "I hear from Xiao Zhang that you’re involved in business and economic criminal activities. Can you please explain the details of your case?"
Elijah Smith had carefully studied the documents photocopied from Isabel Smith’s files more than ten times and knew every detail inside out. So, with no hesitation, he confessed to using Timothy Howard’s false identity, partnering with Sebastian Smith to set up a money laundering company, and laundering black money.
This was tantamount to explaining the whole story, and it took some time. However, the two men on the other side of the table showed no impatience.
