Chapter 798: Chapter 816: Misfortune of Being Just One Step Behind (6)

On the road, Raymond kept chattering to Isabel. Isabel, with overflowing patience, bowed her head, held Raymond in her arms, and talked with him about his childish and senseless topics.

Hearing Raymond say "Sister Isabel" first on his left, then on his right, Percy Stanton couldn’t help but say when they were about to reach their building, "Raymond, you can start calling your Sister Isabel Mum now."

Isabel’s heart leapt at Percy Stanton’s sudden words, a lump forming in her throat.

Her gaze instantly fell on Raymond’s face, her eyes unblinking as they stared intently at Raymond’s expression.

Upon hearing Percy’s words, Raymond first furrowed his brow, then turned his head to look at his own father, and with his childlike voice, said, "But Dad, you and Sister Isabel haven’t had a wedding yet? How can I call Sister Isabel Mum?"

"She originally was your..." Percy Stanton’s words were cut short by a stern tug at his waist. He raised his head to find Isabel’s eyes full of panic, as if she could start crying at any moment. He quickly changed his tone and said to his son,"Sooner or later, Isabel is going to become your Mum. There’s no difference between calling her that now or later."

Raymond bit his lower lip, his little face looking torn.

Though he liked the idea of having Sister Isabel as his Mum, he just... couldn’t bring himself to say it out loud, after all, Sister Isabel wasn’t his real Mum.

Raymond raised his eyelid and stealthily glanced at his father two more times. Then he said in a bargaining tone, "Dad, could I wait until you and Sister Isabel get married, and then start calling Sister Isabel Mum?"

Hearing this, Isabel felt a pang of sadness in her heart. Without waiting for Percy Stanton to respond, she reached out and stroked Raymond’s head, saying, "Of course, whatever makes you happy, Raymond."

When Raymond heard this, he softly smiled and nestled his head in Isabel’s arms. He sweetly said, "Sister Isabel, you’re so nice."

Percy Stanton glanced at the pair before closing his mouth in silence.

Isabel didn’t say anything either, deepening the silence in the car. After a while, Raymond timidly raised his head and asked, "Sister Isabel, will you always be this nice to me?"

Isabel, startled by Raymond’s question, nodded and answered sincerely, "Yes, I will always be."

Raymond blinked, then continued asking, "If Sister Isabel and Dad have their own child in the future, will you still treat me this nicely?"

His words made Isabel instantly understand the true meaning behind Raymond’s previous questions. He was afraid, afraid that his new "stepmother" would mistreat him after marrying his father.

Feeling her own eyes beginning to well up with tears, Isabel lowered her head, giving Raymond a gentle kiss on his forehead. She promised saying, "Raymond, Sister Isabel and Dad will only have you as their child and will only ever be nice to you."

Only then did Raymond reveal a brilliant smile. He raised his head and whispered into Isabel’s ear, "Sister Isabel, I’m glad that Dad chose you to be my Mum. You’re much better than my real Mum."

After a pause, Raymond added in a soft voice, "Sister Isabel, you can have a brother or sister for me, I promise to be very good to them."
