Chapter 748: Chapter 766: The Unknown Good (9)
When was it that the man, ever conscientious to avoid dark circles under his eyes, now had a layer of blue-black appearing beneath them, how long has it been since he had a good rest?
A twinge of pain sprung up in the depths of Ella Adams’ heart. She slowly stepped forward and sat on the chair by the side of the bed. She reached out her hand and gently tapped his under-eye area.
Her fingertips were trembling. The memories of their time together floated in her mind. As she thought about it, a sour feeling roiled in the bottom of her heart. She couldn’t help but raise her hand, covering her own eyes, which immediately turned red.
Perhaps her age was showing. Even now, as he lay asleep and she alone present, she still refused to let herself cry.
Because she was restraining herself, her fingers clasped a little forcefully onto the bedsheet, accidentally touching a hard object. Her fingers reached out and pulled it out, only to find that it was a wallet.
A classic PRADA from many years ago.
It was a Valentine’s Day gift she had given him.
Unexpectedly, after all these years, he still carried it with him.
She remembered the beautiful bare-faced photo of her in it.
During their time together, they had taken many photos, yet all of them were stored on her mobile phone. Naturally, when they broke up, she wouldn’t consider sharing them with him.
She thought, if Elijah Smith hadn’t lost it, the photo in the wallet is probably the only photo she had ever given him.
Only, she wasn’t sure whether he still kept it or not?
Ella Adams unconsciously opened the wallet and discovered that the photo was still properly placed inside. She extended her fingers and pulled out the photo, at the back was written a sentence: Elijah, love from Ella.
Her own graceful and clear handwriting, which she had once written for him.
Only, there was an additional line of characters beside it. The handwriting was not beautiful, but it was in the familiar script of Elijah Smith: Ella, I’m sorry, I love you.
Ella Adams’ fingers, holding the photo, began to tremble violently.
The resentment and dissatisfaction of the past five years, because of these few short sentences, had started to waver at this moment.
...
When Elijah Smith woke up, it was already late at night. Upon opening his eyes, he saw a white reflection under the dim yellow light.
He lay on the bed in a daze for quite some time. It took him a while to remember that he had fainted due to his illness worsening after sending Ella Adams to the airport in the afternoon.
In his dazeness, it seemed as if he had dreamt of Ella Adams bringing him to the hospital.
Elijah Smith knitted his brows and slightly turned his head, only to see Ella Adams sleeping by the bedside.
All his movement and consciousness came to a halt.
Gazing at the familiar sleeping figure so close to him, his heart was first struck with surprise, then filled with warmth.
Her hair was slightly disorderly, under the dim yellow light, it reflected a warm yellow. The skin on her fair face was delicate, with a hint of tender sweetness. Her eyelashes were long and curly, just like that of a Barbie doll, beautiful with a touch of innocence, slightly trembling. Her collar was a little large, due to her arm propping up her head as she slept, her collar was slightly open, revealing large areas of her fair skin.
Seeing it all left Elijah Smith feeling a little parched, his blood rushing. Yet, he dared not move, he didn’t even dare to breathe normally, fearing the slightest action would awaken her.
And so, he just lay there foolishly, staring at her, not moving at all, spending almost half the night without being able to distinguish whether it was a dream or reality.
The next day, when Elijah Smith woke up, Ella Adams was nowhere to be found. The scene from last night seemed like a fleeting dream, vanishing without a trace.
Elijah Smith, leaning against the soft pillow, watched the nurse insert a needle into his veins, but he didn’t feel the pain. His fingers quietly reached out to the place where Ella Adams had lain sleeping the previous night, lightly caressing it. Although it had long turned cold, he seemed to still be able to feel her warmth.
