Chapter 730: Chapter 748: Pain should be shared by everyone (1)
Just as she once said, there are three things in this world that you can never get back once you’ve lost them: time, life, and me.
Looking at Elijah Smith’s smile, Christopher Bell’s heart softened, and he sighed, "I’m not sure either. After graduating from university, I never saw her again, but before that, I saw her twice. Once on the sports field, she looked haggard and disheveled, completely different from her usual radiant self. The other time was at her doctoral graduation ceremony when she represented the graduating PhD students to give a speech. She only spoke a few words before falling silent, looking at the two camphor trees in the distance."
At this point, Christopher sighed again, "That’s all I know, Elijah. But I think you probably can sense that after she broke up with you, she hasn’t been doing particularly well."
Elijah Smith didn’t say anything; his eyes seemed a little lost, and for some reason, the wine he had just drunk felt like it was coming back up.
Standing on the President’s podium during the speech, Christopher knew which two camphor trees could cause Ella Adams to stare lostly at them.
Their names were engraved on those two trees, which were decades-old. They etched their names in the bark with a knife, carving deeply. The school had fined them three hundred dollars for it.
After separating from Christopher, Elijah drove aimlessly through Bellshire City, and at every spot, he could remember a past event with Ella. Finally, at three in the morning, he parked his car at the entrance of Starhaven University, only to realize that this city was filled with so many memories of their past.
Looking at the time, it was now midnight. The gate of Starhaven University was closed, and the storefronts across the street had all turned off their lights. Just a few dim streetlights remained lit, casting a faint yellow glow. Sitting in his car, Elijah seemed a little dazed, staring at the quiet, tree-lined street, suddenly seeing the days when he and Ella walked hand in hand.
Five years... such a long time. Deep love should have been completely wiped away, and strong longing should have been completely dissipated. But strangely, that girl named Ella Adams became clearer and deeper in his heart.
When he gave her up, it was swift and decisive. But in reality, the person who has always been indecisive and unable to let go was him.
It took Elijah a while to skillfully drive the car forward. In the end, he parked it in front of an apartment building. He got out, looked up and counted the floors. When he reached the twelfth floor, he focused on the dark room inside.
The surroundings were quiet, with heavy tree shadows cast by the wind. Some green leaves spun down and fell to the floor with a rustling sound.
Elijah wondered, why did he come here?
The house where Ella Adams used to live.
He and Ella’s house, where they went from knowing each other to loving each other and finally living together.
Five years later, the house was somewhat rundown, but the surrounding environment did not seem to have changed much. Only the two people who had once been in love had now become the most familiar strangers.
Elijah took the elevator to the familiar floor, and outside the familiar door, there were no more lush green plants or the cute bear-shaped sign that said, "Please Smile." He took a key from his pocket, inserted it into the lock and found that it could still open the door. He felt a surge of joy in his heart and pushed the door open. Reaching out, he accurately touched the wall, turned on the light, and found that the interior furnishings were exactly the same as before. Everything was still there, even the couple’s tableware they bought together, neatly placed on the countertop in the open kitchen.
