Chapter 699: Chapter 717: I Want to Do Something Bad (10)

The Public Security Bureau is always a heavy world, always strangely quiet within. Elijah Smith walks at a moderate pace, only the resounding echo of his footsteps accompanying him.

He pushes open the door of an office, before Elijah can say anything, a young man raises his head: "Hello, what can I help you with?"

"Hello." Elijah begins, his tone is somewhat jagged. He steps over to the young man, presses his lips together and finally says: "Who do I speak to if I wish to confess?"

The young man somehow doesn’t believe that this man, who appears energetic and handsome, could be a criminal. He frowns, recalling that appearances can be deceiving. He stands up and asks, "What kind of crime?"

"Business..." Elijah pauses before adding: "Economic."

The young man nods and then sits down to make a phone call, during which he repeats everything Elijah has told him. After hanging up, he turns to Elijah and says, "Please follow me."

The young man leads Elijah to the very last interrogation room in the Public Security Bureau, points to it, and says, "Sir, please wait inside for a moment."

Elijah nods and the young man leaves. He stands at the door, lifts his head to look at the word "Interrogation Room" carved onto a metal plate above. He slightly spaces out, then lifts his feet and walks inside.

Less than a minute later, footsteps resonate from outside the door. The door is pushed open, and two stern-looking men walk in, followed by the young man who had escorted Elijah, holding three cups of tea which he places on the table before he leaves.

The two remaining men, in their uniforms, their five-pointed star badges conspicuously eye-catching, sit down first and then gesture towards the seat opposite them, saying to Elijah, "Please sit."

Elijah does not speak. As he sits down, his gaze moves to the red, solid wood chair. He wonders how many people have sat on this stool, confessing their crimes, and how it’s been worn to an extreme smoothness.

Elijah swallows and sits down.

One of the men lifts his tea cup, takes a sip, and then asks, "What’s your name?"

"Elijah Smith."

The other man, working with a pen and a voice recorder, starts recording and taking notes.

"Did you bring your ID card?"

"Yes." Elijah Smith retrieves his wallet from his waist, takes out his ID card, and hands it over.

The man who has been asking questions takes a glance at the ID card and, after confirming that it’s Elijah’s, passes it over to the note-taking man. He says, "Register his information."

The interrogation room falls silent, filled only with the continual scratching sound of the man jotting down the notes.

After a while, the questioning man sees the notetaking man pause, turns to Elijah and says, "Little Zhang tells us that you have committed a commercial economic offense. Can you explain the situation in detail?"

Elijah, having reviewed all the documents copied by Isabel Smith no fewer than ten times, and being thoroughly familiar with their contents, did not hesitate to confess how he, under the false identity of Timothy Howard, had set up a money-laundering company with Sebastian Smith.

This is equivalent to explaining the whole story again, so it takes some time, yet the two men opposite him show no trace of impatience.

In the interrogation room, only Elijah’s voice can be heard.

His tone remains steady throughout.

Before coming here, he did feel some hesitation.

At twenty, a man is at the prime of his life. He was mischievous and incorrigible just a short while ago, but after meeting Ella Adams, he has been striving to be a good man.
