Chapter 586: Chapter 603: There’s No Place in Life Where We Can’t Meet Each Other (6)

While remaining vigilant, Isabel Smith discreetly pulls out her mobile phone, feigning casual play. She chuckles sporadically at her phone, meanwhile her fingers type out a rapid message to Percy Stanton: "A stranger has invaded my home."

Having sent this message, Isabel quickly deletes her own text, proceeding to silence her phone.

What she fears is Percy seeing the message and calling her, inadvertently alarming the stranger in her room.

Then she continues to send the details of what she’s observed to Percy: "I don’t know if that person has left yet, but whatever you do, don’t call me. It could blow my cover and alert him."

No sooner has she sent this message than a new one comes in on her mobile. Isabel laughs, slapping her bed. She scans Percy’s reply: "I’m on my way."

Seeing his words, Isabel feels somewhat reassured. She continues to feign playing with her phone, replying to Percy: "Okay."

The instant she sends her reply, another message from Percy comes in: "Don’t go anywhere. Stay in your room. Find a weapon to defend yourself. Don’t go outside. It could be more dangerous."

Before she finishes reading the message, another one comes in: "I’ve dispatched undercover police officers nearby. I’ve given them your phone number. They’ll contact you when they arrive. The phone number is..."

Before Isabel reads the entire string of telephone numbers, she is startled by the sound of a cough emanating from the wardrobe behind her.

...

Hiding inside the wardrobe with a small circular glass door, a man keeps a careful eye on Isabel through the tiny glass opening.

He has been tasked by others with stealing some confidential information about the Smith Corporation from Isabel’s computer. He’s been observing her for the past few days noticing Isabel usually returns home near midnight. However, today she returned more than half an hour early.

Having sought refuge in haste, he didn’t have much time to think and ended up hiding in a wardrobe filled with winter clothes.

Among the clothes was a mink fur coat. Its fine fur keeps brushing against his face, causing a tickling sensation that makes him want to sneeze.

He continues holding his breath, endeavoring to stifle his urge, as he figures out a way to escape from the room.

Observing Isabel, who is engrossed in her mobile phone, he grows increasingly impatient. Unable to suppress it anymore, a sensation of unbearable itchiness wells up in his nose. Though he tries to stifle the sneeze by covering his nose with his hand, he accidentally lets out a soft cough.

Although the sound is faint, in the echo chamber of the wardrobe, it seems especially loud.

The man’s vigilance rises in an instant. A ruthless expression flits across the bottom of his eyes while his hand instinctively reaches for the dagger he carries with him, keeping a cautious eye on Isabel outside.

...

Isabel’s hand, gripping her mobile phone, trembles uncontrollably.

The cough was low, suppressed with clear intention. Isabel reckons she wouldn’t have noticed it if the room were not so quiet.

If, just now, she was unsure whether the intruder in her home had left or stayed, now she’s utterly certain.

Moreover, she distinctly heard the cough - it was a man’s cough.

Isabel’s heart jumps into her throat, her entire body breaking out in a cold sweat as she rapidly begins to analyze the current situation.

Being a woman, if it came down to physical prowess, she knows she would be at a clear disadvantage. Furthermore, if the man is armed... Isabel knows direct confrontation is absolutely not going to work.

Since brute force won’t bring victory, the only other option is to pacify him. Isabel lightly swivels her eyes and suddenly executes a stretch and yawn.
