Chapter 579: Chapter 595 Romantic "Encounter" (8)
Single-parent children, whether they lack a mother or a father, are incomplete.
Just like her first child who was taken away by another, even if that child stayed by her side, would perhaps be just like Raymond - pitiful and heartbreaking.
Raymond’s eyes were persistently fixated on Percy Stanton without blinking. His features greatly resembled Percy’s. Once grown up, he would undoubtedly be a heartbreaker.
"Father, is it like you said ago, didn’t my mum ever want me?"
The black marble table in the restaurant reflected the chandelier hanging above, scattering fragmented light.
Raymond’s question, though sounding endearingly childish, felt like a knife ruthlessly stabbing into Percy’s heart.
He always thought he played the part of a father fairly well, he could score himself 80 out of 100.
But now, looking at Raymond’s teary, bright eyes, he felt terribly unfit for the role.
He realized he was selfish. If he genuinely wanted to be a responsible father, he should have found a stepmother for Raymond to provide him with a complete family when he entered their lives. Even though Raymond might not be her biological son, it could be kept a secret, letting Raymond experience a normal upbringing full of health and happiness.
But selfishly, he had made his son suffer for five years, all because of his love for Isabel Smith.
The hitherto unrepentant Percy who had not felt guilty toward Raymond suddenly felt a sense of shame.
His happiness was achieved at the cost of his son’s happiness.
Percy raised his hand, briefly covering his eyes. He dared not meet Raymond’s innocent gaze.
Seeing this, Isabel felt a deep pang in her heart surpassing the one she felt earlier. Looking at Percy, whose face was calm but his eyes spoke of resignation, she too felt a sense of discomfort. She reached out, gently stroking the top of Raymond’s head beside her, trying to break the silence. "Raymond," she softly began, "Didn’t Sister tell you before? Maybe your mother had compelling reasons. Perhaps one day, your mother will come to find you. There’s no mother in this world who would abandon her son."
Children raised in single-parent families mature earlier and are more sensitive than others. Raymond could tell that these words were meant to console him.
He knitted his eyebrows, trying to hold back his tears, then looking at Isabel, he responded lightly but with a touch of sadness, "Sister Isabel, you don’t need to console me anymore. My father’s expressions have already given me my answer."
"What father said before was right. If my mother wanted me, she would have come to find me a long time ago. She certainly doesn’t like me, that’s why she didn’t want me. That’s the reason she hasn’t come to find me after all these years."
As Raymond said these words, his eyes began to redden again. His voice choked up, "It’s been many years since my mum abandoned me. How could she possibly come looking for me now?"
"But, didn’t Raymond tell Sister before, that even though he has never seen his mother, he still misses her? Didn’t Sister also tell Raymond that his mother surely misses him, too?"
Before Isabel could finish, Raymond tugged at his mouth, slightly irritated, "I don’t miss her at all. She never came to find me, she never came to check on me. If she doesn’t want me anymore, why should I miss her? You have no idea how much I despise her now!"
After venting his frustration, Raymond added, "I hate her to death! Even if she comes back, I don’t want her as my mother anymore!"
Isabel knew full well that these words weren’t intended for her. Still, she couldn’t help being startled by them.
