Chapter 577: Chapter 593 Romantic "Encounter" (6)
The call came from the housekeeper, and it wasn’t about Grandma or Isabel Smith, but about Evelyn Osbert.
Elijah Smith lit a cigarette, took a drag, and listened as the housekeeper explained the situation from beginning to end. With an indifferent "hmm," he hung up the phone.
He looked out the window and finished his cigarette. Then he slowly walked back to the library.
"Who called?" Ella Adams tilted her head, asking in a low voice with a smile.
"From the homestead," Elijah Smith replied, then lowered his head and continued to flip through the economics book in front of him.
Before long, the mobile phone in his pocket rang again. Elijah Smith pulled it out and saw it was a call from Evelyn Osbert.
Elijah Smith’s expression quivered slightly, and in the end, he silenced his phone and placed it on the table.
The mobile phone screen went dark, and then another call came in.
Though it was on silent, it still caught Ella Adams’ attention: "Why aren’t you answering your phone?"
Elijah Smith glanced at the contact’s photo of Evelyn Osbert on his mobile phone screen, and his eyes sank. He then raised his hand, picked up his phone, glanced at the time, and realized it was time for dinner. So, he turned off the phone, gathered his textbooks, and said, "Let’s go eat."
Ella Adams looked at Elijah Smith for a moment but didn’t ask further. Instead, she stood up, packed up her things, and they left the library shoulder to shoulder.
Elijah Smith knew Evelyn Osbert was calling to remind him to go to the Public Security Bureau to bail her out. He also knew that she had run into trouble because of Percy Stanton’s mischievous son.
Moreover, he knew that it was Grandma who had instructed the housekeeper to call him.
But he just didn’t want to go.
If he hadn’t heard Amelia’s phone call, he would’ve rushed to Evelyn Osbert’s aid. But now, he was no longer the same person he once was.
He wasn’t stupid; he was just upset that Isabel had left him alone in the United States. He simply wanted a sister like Evelyn Osbert who cared for him. All he craved was genuine care and warmth in this world.
However, he began to slowly understand some things and realized that the only person who truly cared for him was Isabel Smith.
It was a love thicker than blood.
He understood this love too late, so now his only option was to study hard and try to create a better future for Isabel as soon as possible.
As for Evelyn Osbert, who had fallen into distress at this time, he didn’t want to deal with her for Isabel’s sake.
Even if Grandma later scolded and punished him, it didn’t matter.
... ...
After leaving the police station, Percy Stanton drove Isabel Smith and Raymond Thompson to the restaurant he had booked in advance to celebrate Raymond’s birthday.
Raymond, possibly famished, seemed to have temporarily forgotten about Percy Stanton and Isabel Smith’s kiss. As he ate his cake with a spoon after cutting it, he suddenly looked up with a cream-covered face and innocently asked, "Father, Sister Isabel, today you said that lady at the police station was a ’dragging oil bottle.’ What does that mean?"
Like a curious baby, Raymond asked and then tilted his head, licking the cream off his spoon. He spoke innocently, "Is a ’dragging oil bottle’ a bottle that drags along?"
Isabel Smith couldn’t help but smile at Raymond’s innocent words.
Percy Stanton, sitting across from her, looked at Isabel Smith’s gentle smile and softened his expression. In a rare moment of explanation, he told his curious son, "In ancient times, it referred to children from a woman’s previous marriage when she remarried, who were called ’dragging oil bottles.’ Nowadays, it’s used to describe children of single parents."
