Chapter 483: Chapter 499: So It’s Him (4)
The names on the menu were quite artistic, and Isabel Smith found them a bit hard to understand. To avoid any embarrassment, she only chose two familiar homestyle dishes.
Within several minutes of placing their orders, the waiter brought over wine and tea for everyone. Percy Stanton was the first to raise his wine glass and politely addressed the table with a smile, "Today, I’m truly grateful to all of you."
"Mr. Stanton, you’re too kind."
Everyone chimed in with their responses, then raised their wine glasses and drank up.
It had been a month since Isabel had her miscarriage, and she could now drink alcohol. However, due to her fear of suffering another miscarriage because of excessive drinking, she only took a small sip from her wine glass and then put it down.
The wine seemed to be brewed specially, with a sweet and delicious taste when it first entered the mouth, but it had a slight spiciness once it had been swallowed. Then, it left one with many layers of lingering flavor.
After everyone finished their first glass of gratitude wine, they picked up their tableware and began eating the dishes that had been served.
Percy was the first to grab his utensils, and picked up some food for Isabel- she thought these homestyle dishes wouldn’t taste much different from what she was used to. But after taking a bite, she realized that this was even better than any other dishes she had tasted before.
Since everyone was gathered together for dinner, with the flow of the drinks, it wasn’t long before the table was filled with mostly untouched dishes and an empty large bottle of wine.
The waiter behind Percy opened a new bottle of wine and filled everyone’s glasses. Everyone still chatted; most topics were about ongoing projects in various departments and cities, how some projects were taken away by relatives of certain government leaders, and inevitably discussing the overall value of these projects.
Isabel felt that she recognized some of the people at the table, but she couldn’t quite recall who they were. Eventually, as these people came to toast to her, Percy softly introduced them to her, and she finally realized that these people were actually some of the well-known figures who appeared on Bellshire’s Central TV Station at 7 p.m.
Isabel really wanted to ask Percy how he knew all these people, but with them present, it felt inappropriate, so she kept her doubts to herself and continued to display her polite and composed demeanor.
In her heart, she was getting more and more suspicious; she had always known that Percy had some connections, and inquired about them as well. He told her that it was through his work that he got to know them, and at first, she didn’t have any suspicion.
However, now that he had arranged everything for Elijah Smith’s fight in front of all these high-ranking individuals, she suddenly felt that she had been too naive and foolish beforehand.
Besides, the fact that Elijah’s fight was a trivial issue to these prominent figures, yet Percy could gather all of them to handle this petty matter, raised some questions.
There had always been rumors inside the Business Circle of Bellshire, that Percy started from scratch, without backing or social standing, and that he solely carved out a niche for himself in Bellshire City through his intelligence.
If that was truly the case, he wouldn’t have been able to access government departments, right?
So, who exactly was he?
As Isabel pondered, she couldn’t help but turn her head and stare at Percy carefully. Percy was holding a light green jade cup in his hand, and his delicate fingers contrasted beautifully with it.
Over the course of the meal, conversations covered various subjects with various degrees of interest. Eventually, someone shifted the topic from national affairs to personal matters.
"Mr. Stanton seems to be not so young anymore. Have you thought about getting married now?"
Percy leaned back in his chair, hearing the question, glanced at Isabel, and smiled without saying a word.
