Chapter 466: Chapter 482: You Promised I Still Have You (24)
Through the pretty display window, you could always see a happy family scene of people gathered around the Christmas tree, dancing and singing.
Isabel Smith stood in a daze for quite a while before returning home with her bags. Perhaps due to her mood, the house felt empty. She wandered around, trying to find all sorts of things to do to keep busy, but by twelve o’clock, she still felt suffocated at heart and decided to step out once again.
She walked around the nearby shopping mall, still seeing those harmonious family scenes everywhere she looked.
Everyone had company during the holidays, but what about her?
Isabel stood in the mall’s great hall, watching the hustle and bustle of people all around, and suddenly felt an indescribable sadness.
In the end, she took out her mobile phone and checked the time. It was two o’clock. After some thought, she made her way back home, grabbed her airplane ticket, and rushed out without packing a thing. Once outside, she hailed a taxi and said, "Master, please take me to the airport."
The road to the airport was clear of traffic, and in just forty minutes, the taxi had already arrived. Isabel paid the fare, got off, and sprinted into the airport. As she was about to reach the security checkpoint, her phone suddenly rang in her pocket.
Isabel glanced at the caller ID, and answered while in line, "Grandma."
"Isabel, why did you suddenly come to the Smith Family last night and then leave again?"
Isabel immediately thought back to yesterday’s argument with Evelyn Osbert, and her eyes turned cold. She replied flatly, "I had something come up temporarily and forgot to tell Grandma."
"Hmm," Mrs. Smith responded and didn’t mention it further, changing the subject, "Isabel, I called to ask your impression of George Vincent."
Isabel frowned and replied evasively, "He’s just okay."
"Isabel, Mrs. Vincent just called me, saying that George has a great impression of you and really likes you. If possible, she hopes we could settle your wedding affairs as soon as possible."
Despite the distance between them, Isabel could sense the smile on Mrs. Smith’s face as she spoke.
"Isabel, the Vincent Family has a noble financial background. They own 20% of the shares in the Smith Corporation, making them one of the largest shareholders. If it weren’t for your grandfather’s excellent relationship with George’s grandfather back then, this marriage wouldn’t have been possible."
Isabel understood the implication. It meant this marriage was her reaching above herself to marry George. If she rejected the idea, she’d be seen as unreasonable.
Isabel hesitated for a while before gently saying, "Grandma, George and I have just met, and we’re not familiar with each other. Isn’t it too early to talk about marriage?"
"Isabel, feelings can be fostered slowly after the engagement as you both get to know each other. If you want to return to Smith Corporation and assert your authority, George is a good choice. Grandma believes you’re a smart child. Evelyn is still young and whether she’s capable, we don’t know yet. After all, she’s not a Smith by blood. These matters don’t need to be emphasized by Grandma. Grandma has already discussed it with the Vincent Family, as long as you get married, all the shares Grandma owns will be transferred to your name, and the Vincent Family’s shares in the Smith Corporation will also be handed over to George. In this world, no cooperation is more stable than a marriage. So, Isabel, Grandma has already set up this marriage for you, and soon your engagement announcement with George will be released."
Isabel never expected things to happen so suddenly, and it was apparent that Grandma hadn’t called to seek her opinion but to inform her of the arrangement.
Alliance marriage...it was something she had never even considered. Isabel opened her mouth to say something else to Mrs. Smith, but the line had already been disconnected.
