Chapter 465: Chapter 481: You Promised I Still Have You (23)

Elijah Smith looked around the small attic before leaning weakly against the peeling walls, not caring that his clothes were stained by a layer of dust. He slowly closed his eyes, the words that he had unintentionally heard from Amelia still echoing in his ears.

Then, a pain began to gradually spread in his heart... pain for his older sister and for the burdens she had borne.

...

Isabel Smith encountered Percy Stanton, who happened to be leaving his apartment as she returned from the corridor. She didn’t greet him or even wait for him to speak, instead, holding her bag and quickly entering her home.

It was another sleepless night, not falling asleep until three in the morning, and not sleeping soundly at that. Come eight o’clock in the early morning, she awoke.

Isabel got out of bed and went to freshen up, only to find that the bag she had left on the table yesterday was empty, and a whole, undamaged cup sat next to it.

Isabel walked up to the tea table, crouched down, picked up the cup, and examined it closely. She found that the shattered pieces had been carefully pieced back together and glued in place. The naive drawings on the surface, done by her own hand, were also pieced together perfectly. If one didn’t look carefully, they would never notice the fine cracks on the cup’s exterior. Half a glass of water had been poured into it without any seepage.

Isabel stared at the cup, her throat tightening. She picked up the envelope, opened it, and an airplane ticket fell out along with a sticky note that read: Isabel, the four-day deadline has passed. Today, at three o’clock in the afternoon, I’ll be waiting for you at the airport.

The words on the sticky note were strong and powerful.

With trembling fingers, Isabel scrutinized the message.

She stared at the card in her hand for a long time, then raised her head to look at the ceramic cup she had placed back on the tea table. Her gaze shifted, but a warmth in her heart slowly spread from her chest.

Female’s emotions can be quite strange; even if they know a man has let them down, they can’t help but be moved by some things they’ve done.

After a while, Isabel put the card on the table, slowly turned around, and walked into the restroom. She took a hot bath, dried her hair, and glanced at the ceramic cup and airplane ticket on the table before changing into simple clothes, grabbing her wallet, and heading out to the supermarket.

Today was New Year’s Eve, and there were many people in the supermarket, all shopping in groups like families.

Nowadays, there are so many brands of one type of food, and having been away from China for so long, Isabel didn’t know which brand tasted good, so she often hesitated when choosing.

Various women would often stand around her, also selecting items. When they were uncertain, they would turn their heads and ask the accompanying men for their opinions. The men would suggest something, the women would counter, and so, the couple would discuss for a long time whether to buy the product or not.

At these moments, Isabel’s heart would always feel uneasy.

Carrying a bag of groceries, she walked back to her apartment on foot. More than half of the shops along the streets had been closed and their exteriors were adorned with bright red couplets gleaming with auspicious golden words.

Some children ran up and down the streets playing with fireworks while the adults following them would occasionally remind them to be careful not to trip.

Isabel stood on the roadway, looking left and right, noticing that everyone was in groups, appearing harmonious and content, like one big family. Raising her head, she saw the tall buildings surrounding her and suddenly felt oppressed.

Usually, being alone for a long time didn’t feel too out of the ordinary, but on New Year’s Eve, being alone made Isabel feel a sense of panic she couldn’t express. It was just like when she was alone in the United States on Christmas, walking the streets by herself.
