Chapter 450: Chapter 466: Promised I Still Have You (8)

Isabel Smith had been wondering all the way how Mrs. Smith had managed to help her. But no matter how hard she tried, she couldn’t figure it out. It wasn’t until the waiter opened the door to a private booth, revealing a middle-aged couple and a young man who looked about her age, that she suddenly realized what Mrs. Smith’s so-called method was.

It was a common strategy for businesses – an arranged marriage.

Two powerful families would join forces, resulting in a win-win scenario.

Isabel instantly understood why Mrs. Smith hadn’t given her any advance notice and had looked at her with a meaningful expression, leaving it up to her to grasp the situation.

Isabel had always rejected the idea of arranged marriages. In her mind, marriage was the destination for love. Building a marriage on the basis of interests seemed somewhat ridiculous.

Standing at the doorstep, Isabel was tempted to just turn around and walk away. However, Mrs. Smith looked at her with a beaming smile and said, in a somewhat stern tone, "Isabel, come on in."

Isabel pursed her lips and eventually lowered her gaze. Trying to hold back her frustration, she walked inside.

The table was round, lavishly decorated with a large bouquet of luscious lilies, their petals adorned with droplets of water - an enchanting sight.

Sitting directly opposite to Isabel was the young man, dressed in a neat blue suit, looking elegant and handsome.

The moment the young man saw Isabel, a touch of surprise flashed in his eyes. Afterward, he lowered his head and sat there silently without speaking.

Isabel didn’t say anything either.

As soon as they all sat down, the young man’s parents and Mrs. Smith engaged in a flurry of affectionate conversations, praising each other’s granddaughter and son, respectively.

Through their compliments, Isabel learned that the man she was meeting for this blind date was called George Vincent.

Mrs. Smith and George’s parents stayed for only half an hour before leaving together with a fake-sounding excuse.

As soon as the three elders left, the private booth became quiet.

Both Isabel and George seemed to have no intention of picking up any tableware to eat the delicious dishes laid out on the table.

Due to the prolonged silence, the atmosphere in the private booth became awkward. Just as Isabel wondered whether she should find an excuse to leave, George suddenly raised his hand, picked up the teapot on the table, and poured a cup of floral tea for her.

"Thank you." Isabel lifted her eyelids, looked at George for a moment, then lowered her gaze again, picked up the teacup, and slowly took a sip.

"I just heard them say that you returned from the United States half a year ago?" It seemed that George sensed the overwhelming silence in the booth and decided to bring up a topic of conversation.

"Yes." Isabel gave a faint smile, glanced at George again, and uttered a single word.

Isabel didn’t have much experience with blind dates, and this was one purely arranged by Mrs. Smith, which caught her somewhat off-guard. Despite having been in the private booth for more than an hour now, she still felt uncomfortable. Although she knew she should say more or ask George about his own questions, she just couldn’t muster any interest. Thus, she decided to remain silent.

Her apparent indifference left George unsure of how to proceed. The two fell silent once again.

It appeared that George was hungry after a while and began to eat using chopsticks. As he took in the sight of Isabel sitting across from him, he couldn’t help but ask, "What’s wrong? Don’t you want to eat any of this? What do you like? Should we go somewhere else?"

"There’s no need for all of that trouble," Isabel shook her head. "I’m not particularly hungry."
