Chapter 444: Chapter 460: Promised I Still Have You (2)
He held her for a long time, so long that Isabel Smith gradually calmed down in his arms, and the light in the corridor suddenly turned on. Percy Stanton gently cradled her horizontally and carried her to her room, placing her on the sofa in her bedroom.
Perhaps because of the emotional turmoil she had just experienced, Isabel seemed somewhat dazed. Percy brought a basin of hot water from the bathroom, washed her feet that had run out without shoes, and then wiped the tear stains from her face with a hot towel.
Isabel remained silent as Percy took care of everything and carried her into bed.
Percy lay down beside her, patting her on the back, coaxing her to sleep.
Exhausted, it didn’t take long for Isabel to fall asleep with Percy by her side.
Once she was sound asleep, Percy got up and surveyed the messy room. He gently covered her with a quilt, then began to tidy up.
He started by cleaning the bedroom floor, though he wasn’t sure where everything should go. So he simply sorted and arranged things neatly based on his own intuition.
Percy put any damaged items that Isabel had thrown away into a trash bag.
Moving cautiously and quietly, he tidied without making a sound.
Finally, he entered the dressing room, which was even more chaotic. He picked up Isabel’s clothes, sorted the summer clothes into one cabinet, followed by winter clothes, and finally, spring and autumn clothes.
After arranging the clothing, there were still many miscellaneous items scattered on the floor. Percy bent down and picked them up one by one. Some decorative necklaces had been torn apart by Isabel, so he placed them in an empty box, intending to find someone to fix them tomorrow.
At last, Percy found a Peninsula Iron Box under the floor mirror in the dressing room.
The Peninsula Iron Box was popular when Jay Chou first rose to fame, after his hit song "Nunchucks" spread throughout China. With his unique unintelligible singing style, he sang many well-known classic songs, including "Peninsula Iron Box." It was at that time that major stores started selling these Peninsula Iron Boxes.
The box looked quite old, like something from many years ago.
Percy bent down, picked up the iron box, and examined it closely in his hands. He noticed a small golden lock on one side of the box.
He shook the box hard in the palm of his hand, hearing a faint sound inside. He remembered that many young girls would collect their favorite trinkets inside a Peninsula Iron Box when he was in school. Could this box also contain Isabel’s cherished items?
Driven by curiosity, Percy fiddled with the golden lock for a moment, then grabbed a small hairpin from the dresser next to Isabel. He inserted the hairpin into the lock, gently moved it a couple of times, and the lock clicked open.
Percy casually removed the small golden lock, threw it and the hairpin onto the dressing table, and opened the box to see many cards inside. He flipped through them and found a five dollar bill folded into a heart shape beneath the cards.
That five dollar bill seemed vaguely familiar to Percy, and a strong intuition welled up in his heart. Yet he dared not be certain. Overwhelming joy rolled in his chest, and he swallowed his saliva, then picked up the cards. He discovered that there were neat writing on the back of each card and couldn’t help but read them one by one:
- X year X month X day, I lent him five dollars. I inadvertently glanced at him and immediately understood what it meant to be smitten. Although he didn’t respond to my talking, he simply rode away on his bicycle. That afternoon, I dragged my father with me to buy a bicycle.
