She hastily ran over, peering through the window to see neon lights glowing in the distance. Comforted, she pressed herself against the wall, sitting on the ground, murmuring to the void as if reassuring herself.

...

Percy Stanton had just fallen asleep when he heard a loud knock on his door. Thinking he was dreaming, he hesitated before realizing someone was really knocking on the door. He recognized a faint, familiar voice. He quickly threw off his quilt, turned on the light, and found his room plunged into darkness. He picked up his mobile phone, put on his bathrobe, and walked out of the living room. At the storage cabinet, he grabbed a flashlight, and rushed to the door.

When Percy opened the door, the light from his flashlight spotted Isabel Smith crouching in front of the corridor window, talking to herself, seemingly oblivious to his presence.

"Actually, I’m not afraid of the dark... but from the year I turned eighteen, I started to fear it..."

"I know there’s no one here, but I just want to talk. That way, I can pretend someone’s listening, and I won’t be so scared..."

Percy, initially intending to approach her, suddenly stopped in his tracks.

He slowly switched off his flashlight, standing silently in the dark, listening to her melancholic yet soothing voice echo lightly in the air.

"I actually don’t like crying... I didn’t like it even when I was little... But I cried a lot when I was little. My mom was annoyed that I bullied my classmates at school, so she had me standing as punishment under the big locust tree in our yard. Once, in the summer, there were a lot of bugs in the yard. A big one flew onto my arm and bit me. My skin swelled into a large, red bump. Seeing it scared me so much I burst into tears. I was sure I was going to die. My cries were so heart-wrenching. My parents responded by comforting me, applying swelling ointment on my arm, and kissing my cheek to reassure me saying ’little princess, it’s okay’. As I got older, I consistently performed well at school. But once, due to a fever, I didn’t do well in a test and lost my first rank. Even though the teacher praised me in school, I felt wronged. I returned home, closed the door, hid in my bedroom, and cried for a full half hour. My parents tried to cheer me up in turns, but I was determined to cry, not paying attention to anyone. At that time, my parents were there, telling me, ’little princess, it’s okay...’"

"You don’t know, but when I used to cry, it was a kind of happiness. Being called a little princess, at that time, I really was a little princess..."

Isabel paused, lifted her hand to wipe away her tears, and after a while, continued, "Years later, I realized the things I used to cry about, which seemed so earth-shattering as a kid, were actually nothing. Looking back now, being able to cry like that was a kind of bliss."

"Do you know? Bellshire is vast, full of people. Everyday in this city, there are people being born and others dying. Some live rich and noble lives that others envy; others live beneath the Sky Bridge, enduring cruel winters and sweltering summers. Some become beggars living under the bridge overnight, while others go from being beggars to tycoons with views from the top, all in one night. No other city in the world is as dramatic and legendary as Bellshire."

"Bellshire is full of lights, day and night, always illuminated. Even in the darkest of nights, if you stand up high and look out, everything is as splendid as a brocade. That’s why everyone yearns to survive in this metropolis."
