Chapter 440: Chapter 456: The Late Menstruation (18)
Just when Isabel Smith was stirring out of sleep, she bewilderedly turned her head, looked out the car window, paused momentarily before speaking, "Are we there yet?"
"Yes," responded Percy Stanton and then parked the car in the customary spot.
On the journey back up to the eighteenth floor, the two hardly spoke a word.
Once, he had a justifiable reason to come in and out of her house late at night. But now... he had lost that privilege.
Stepping out of the elevator, Percy Stanton felt an unexplainable melancholy. He glanced at Isabel Smith’s room door, then slowly handed over the bag of little items he had been carrying to Isabel.
Isabel Smith lifted her hand to accept it naturally, leaving a word of thanks, "Thank you."
She then turned and walked to her door, took out her key, and entered her apartment.
The door closed rather quickly. Percy Stanton stood in the corridor, staring at the closed door of Isabel Smith’s flat. The short-lived warmth and happiness on the journey back to Bellshire from the suburbs now felt as unreal as a dream.
...
Back at home, Isabel Smith took a bath and crawled into bed, ready to rest.
Meanwhile, Percy was restless in his apartment, unable to fall asleep. He held the key to Isabel’s Smith’s house in his hand, but he did not have any good excuses to go to her. His mood became even more frustrated.
Finally, at one o’clock in the early morning, Percy Stanton, who had been restless for a while now, gave in and returned to his own bedroom, collapsing on the bed, and fell into a troubled sleep amidst irritability and heat.
...
Isabel’s first day out of the hospital went surprisingly well - at least she no longer had to face the cold, sterile confines of the infirmary, with constant reminders of the child she had recently lost.
She made a trip to the suburbs. Although she hadn’t fully recovered her spirits, at least, she felt less lifeless on this day.
So, she went to bed early, and slept deeply.
However, just because she didn’t think about certain things during the day doesn’t mean they wouldn’t appear in dreams at night.
Since she lost her child, Percy Stanton has been with her every night in the hospital, and she rarely had nightmares. But on her first night back home alone, she was plagued by nightmares.
The nightmares, now an old narrative, still included her parents, her first child, and now, a dripping lump of a little chubby kid coated in fresh blood. In her dreams, she strained to reach out to each one of them, but no matter how hard she tried, she couldn’t hold onto them. She could only watch as they moved further and further away...
Even that little chubby kid was there, crying and blaming her: "You don’t deserve to be my mom. You actually let me die. You’re a bad mom..."
Bad mom...
Those three words were like a sharp knife, cruelly jabbing deep into Isabel Smith’s heart, and she snapped awake from the nightmare.
She was drenched in cold sweat and breathing heavily.
In the darkness of the room, she cleared her throat, but the sound-controlled lamp did not light up. Isabel Smith had always been scared of this kind of darkness. She reached under her pillow for her cell phone and turned on the flashlight. She reached for the room’s master light switch, yet it stayed dark.
Only then she realized, there was a power outage.
Curling up in her bed, she turned the cell phone flashlight to its brightest. Yet, no matter what, she couldn’t fall asleep. As soon as she even tried to close her eyes, she would see that meat bun child.
Scared and shivering, she wrapped herself in her quilt, hugged her entire body tightly, silently waiting in her heart for when the power would return.
But, it continued to be pitch dark, to the point that her mobile phone, the only source of light, began to alert her of a low battery.
The phone was nearly dead...even the only source of light was about to be gone...
