Chapter 403: Chapter 417: Overestimating Oneself, Underestimating Love (19)

Percy Stanton held onto the mobile phone, listening to the single word he just heard. At that moment, he suddenly felt as if he had a language barrier and couldn’t utter a single word.

...

When Percy made this phone call, Secretary Emille was explaining her recent itinerary to Isabel Smith.

The office room was eerily quiet, with only Secretary Emille’s voice echoing sentence by sentence.

Isabel remained silent throughout the whole time Secretary Emille was speaking.

Suddenly, Isabel’s mobile phone on the office desk rang.

Isabel seemed to be lost in thought and didn’t react, so Secretary Emille reminded her: "Miss Smith, your phone is ringing again."

Isabel turned her head, glanced at the caller, thought, "What’s meant to come will come," and then said to Secretary Emille, "You can leave now."

After Secretary Emille left the office, Isabel took a deep breath, picked up her phone, pressed the answer key, and said "Hello" to the person on the other end.

It was very quiet on the other end of the phone. Isabel held the mobile phone, waiting for a long time, but she didn’t hear Percy’s voice.

She didn’t speak either.

Just holding the mobile phone, Isabel patiently waited.

As time ticked away, both ends of the line were extremely quiet. Isabel could faintly hear the flapping of pigeons’ wings and the gentle wind through the receiver from his end.

After an unknowingly long time, Percy cleared his throat, opened his mouth, and called her name: "Isabel."

At some point, he had stopped calling her Miss Smith and started calling her Isabel. Though he was addressing her, the meaning was quite different.

Isabel had always known her name was beautiful. The three characters, 林, 深, 深, when pronounced, make the speaker’s tongue twist in their mouth, creating a rhyming and lingering effect.

But now, hearing the word "Isabel" from Percy’s mouth, she felt a lingering melancholic sense from it.

Hearing it made her heart suddenly skip a beat.

It was strange. He used to call her Isabel before, but she didn’t have this sensation. Why was she feeling this now?

Now it was Isabel’s turn to be silent. She held her phone, turned her swivel chair in a circle, and happened to see the clear weather after Bellshire City’s heavy snowfall overnight. The sky was an indistinguishable blue, with a few wispy clouds floating overhead, and the sunlight looked warm. Just looking out the window made people feel warmer, but only those outside walking knew the bone-chilling cold behind the warmth.

It was like how Isabel always felt about Percy; how he possessed a magical warm power that could slowly infiltrate one’s world, warming it up, yet leaving them chilled to the core in a short moment with just one action.

Suddenly, Isabel had a strong urge to ask Percy why he investigated her.

Was it because he cared about her past, was curious about it, or was he now criticizing her past?

No matter the reason, Isabel knew that there was nothing she could do to change her past in this lifetime.

A single phone call connected a northern city and a southern city, separated by countless cities and villages, as well as a densely populated area.

Despite the vast distance, Percy could still clearly hear Isabel’s breathing over the phone.

As always, the frequency was very soft, almost unnoticeable if one didn’t listen closely.

It was such a familiar feeling...

Percy’s troubled state of mind during this time gradually subsided with this sensation.

He couldn’t help but recall the days when they worked together and when he taught her some professional knowledge in economics.
