Chapter 401: Chapter 415: Overestimating Oneself, Underestimating Love (17)
On the bed, Percy Stanton appeared to be sleeping soundly, yet tears, like broken strings of pearls, fell one after the other, wetting his pillow.
John Quincy watched for a while before lowering his head and sighing, thinking, was this a case of natural talent attracting jealousy from the heavens?
How could the smooth-sailing Percy accidentally encounter Isabel Smith, only to become trapped by love?
When it comes to love, it’s a lifelong practice for a person, and others cannot teach or help.
If it’s love without destiny, even with many people aiding in the situation, eventually it would still lead to a dead-end conclusion.
Hopefully, Percy’s path of love would take a turn for the better.
John Quincy picked up the remote control and turned off the bedroom’s big light. As he turned to leave, he suddenly heard the pleasant cell phone ringtone from within the room. In the dim night light, he saw a glow shimmering from the clothes he had thrown on the floor. He bent over, picked up Percy’s mobile phone, and saw the name "Isabel" displaying on an incoming call. He glanced at Percy, who was fast asleep on the bed, and called out a couple of times, but Percy just turned and didn’t wake up.
John Quincy glanced at the time on the mobile phone; it was almost 12 o’clock. Why would someone call so late, unless it was something important?
He hesitated but ultimately decided to answer the call.
...
The phone rang several times before being answered.
Isabel Smith had not completely woken up yet. She held the phone and subconsciously called out softly, "Percy.."
Her voice sounded fragile and flustered, revealing dependence she had never noticed in herself before.
"...Hello?"
Yet, the voice that followed was a stranger’s. Isabel instantly came back to her senses, her heart flooded with an unspeakable sense of regret. She then heard, "Percy had a bit too much to drink and is asleep now. Do you have any urgent matter? I can pass the message to him."
Isabel had impulsively made the call to tell Percy about her pregnancy, but now that someone else had answered, she couldn’t bring herself to say it.
Her entire being slowly regained consciousness.
Noticing that she hadn’t spoken for some time, the person on the other end of the call added, "Or... I’ll have him call you back once he wakes up?"
It was only then that Isabel realized how long she had been silent and quickly snapped back to her senses, responding with a simple "Mhm."
"Alright then, it’s getting late. You should get some rest early."
"Goodbye."
After hanging up the call, Isabel found herself unable to sleep, her mind a whirlwind of chaos as she lay in bed, staring into the pitch-black night outside her window.
Upon reflection, on Christmas night, she was incredibly angry when she saw the investigation materials he had gathered on her. However, as days passed, her anger evaporated completely without her noticing.
She had always known that she owed more to Percy in their relationship. Yet, as a woman, she still wanted to wait for the man to take the initiative and resolve the impasse.
Who would have thought Percy would just leave Bellshire like that?
She hadn’t had time to think about the circumstances between her and Percy when she made this impulsive call. If Percy had answered at that moment, she might have blurted out that she was pregnant.
But now, with her senses back, Isabel couldn’t help but wonder whether or not she should tell Percy about the pregnancy.
Was she to use the child in her belly to summon Percy back? And then... be engaged in a lifetime with him because of this child?
...
After hanging up the call, John Quincy made sure to leave a reminder on Percy’s mobile phone with the exact time and date when Isabel had called.
