Chapter 382: Chapter 396: Proposal Gift (30)
Isabel Smith let out a sigh, as if venting the pressure from the depths of her heart. Her expression looked terrible, frightening Secretary Emille into closing her mouth and hurriedly turning to leave.
Once again, the office room was quiet. Isabel took a long time before picking up the envelope on the table, opening it, and taking out two sheets of paper covered in dense writing. However, she couldn’t bear to read a single sentence, and in the end, she just carelessly stuffed the resignation letter into her office desk drawer. She then raised her hand in frustration, grabbed at her hair, and lay her head on the table, not moving at all.
That afternoon at the company’s routine meeting, with Percy Stanton absent, Isabel was the only one in charge.
Secretary Emille might have told quite a few people about Percy’s resignation. After the meeting, two unmarried female employees who used to ask Percy questions came to ask Isabel, "CEO Smith, is Vice President Campbell really leaving?"
Isabel, feeling agitated, closed the folder, stood up, and walked straight out of the conference room. As soon as her figure disappeared at the doorway, a few female employees let out mournful cries.
"What a pity. Why did Vice President Campbell resign?"
"My only joy in going to work is gone!"
"So sad. Vice President Campbell is so heartless, leaving without saying a word to us, not even holding a farewell meeting."
...
Isabel stood at the doorway of the conference room, listening to the discussion inside. She lowered her eyes and continued towards her own office room. Coincidentally, she passed by Percy’s office and looked inside to find it empty.
A while ago, she had complained to Percy that the monotonous office environment affected her mood, so she dragged him to the flower shop on the ground floor and bought some plants, which grew quite well.
Among them were purple bamboo orchids, one in her office and one in Percy’s.
They needed to be watered every day.
However, most of the time it was Percy who went to her office and watered her plant.
So, through the bright glass, Isabel could see the nutrient solution and spray bottle next to the flowerpot.
Isabel stood there for a while, then pushed open the door of Percy’s office, went to the flowerpot, picked up the spray bottle, mixed in some nutrient solution, filled it with water at the faucet, and watered the purple bamboo orchids in Percy’s office. She then took it to her office and watered her own plant.
...
For the next three days, Percy was nowhere to be found in Smith Corporation.
Employees from Business Department A Team gradually stopped discussing Percy’s resignation, as if they had already accepted the news.
During these three days, Isabel didn’t have a good or bad time; suddenly being without Percy by her side, she indeed felt a bit uneasy.
For example, during meetings, she was used to casting a glance to her right side to get the opinion of the quiet man sitting next to her.
However, every time she turned her head, she found that the seat was empty, and even once, after eloquently explaining everyone’s weekly tasks, she turned to him with a smile, naturally and smoothly asking, "Percy, do you have anything to add?"
All she got in response was the silence of the room.
Yet, Isabel didn’t notice anything strange, still wearing a faint smile, as if waiting for Percy to answer.
The expressions on the employees’ faces became somewhat strange. After a long while, it was Secretary Emille who reminded her, "CEO Smith, didn’t Vice President Campbell already resign?"
Isabel, taken aback, took a long time to realize that she had made such an embarrassing mistake out of habit.
She wanted to laugh it off and joke about herself, but she found she couldn’t laugh at all, and even felt suffocated at the bottom of her heart. In the end, she just nodded her head, said "Oh," and signaled for everyone to exit the conference room.
After the employees left, Isabel remained seated, not moving. The vast conference room was dimly lit, with only the blue light emanating from the big screen behind her.
