Chapter 377: Chapter 391: Proposal Gift (25)
"You want to understand me?" Isabel Smith looked at Percy Stanton, feeling as if a large chunk of her heart had been ripped out, causing her unbearable pain. "To understand me, you have to investigate me? To understand me, can’t you try to open my heart and let me tell you?"
"Of all the ways to understand someone, Percy, why did you choose the one that tramples on people’s self-esteem?"
"Don’t you think what you’re saying sounds ridiculous?"
"Did you ever consider my feelings when you were doing these things? Did you ever care about my emotions?"
When Percy heard this, he was at a loss for words. He didn’t know how to explain himself to Isabel, or perhaps there was no way to explain this situation.
It was out of jealousy that he had investigated her. If he told her that it was out of love for her that he had done this, not just her, even he would think that nobody would believe him.
No matter what he said, it seemed pale.
For the first time in his life, he had never felt so lacking in confidence.
The problem was caused by his own foolishness, unable to get over the hurdle in his heart. As long as he destroyed the investigation materials, everything would vanish, and Isabel would never know, and they would continue to move forward.
That had been his plan, but somehow, he had made such a big mistake, leading to this terrible situation!
As Percy thought about how to deal with this, Isabel’s voice came again: "Percy, do you know how I feel about you right now?"
Percy looked up at Isabel, unconsciously holding his breath.
People are irrational when controlled by their emotions. The words they say often come out without going through their heart.
And often, these words are the most hurtful.
Before seeing the investigation materials, Isabel had always thought that Percy was genuinely good to her, but now that she had seen them, she realized how she had been living in a delusional dream.
Isabel Smith... Your happiness was lost six years ago. Your willfulness led to the death of both your parents, and you no longer deserve anyone’s genuine kindness... Stop dreaming those foolish dreams!
As Isabel thought about this, she suddenly began to smile faintly. Her smile was still beautiful, but her words were cruel, uttered one by one, unaware if they were meant for herself or for Percy.
"I think you’re worse than anyone I’ve ever met... How could I have chosen you? There are so many people in Bellshire City who are better than you, more powerful than you, more influential than you... How could I have chosen you?"
Despite her anger, Isabel’s heart skipped a beat as she spoke these words. She paused, staring at the man in front of her, her angry heart suddenly filled with fear.
She clearly saw the fear within her, the inferiority that had always lurked deep within her heart.
Once upon a time, she was the glorious Young Miss of the Smith Family, but becoming pregnant as a minor had knocked her off her pedestal.
She knew deep down that she had a child and didn’t care who it bothered, but she was still afraid of people looking down on her if they knew about her pregnancy.
She never believed that any man in this world could be magnanimous enough to accept a woman with a history of pregnancy and childbirth.
So, she had always disguised herself well, hiding her inner humiliation by deceiving herself. And now, Percy had investigated everything about her.
A person she wanted to care for, or perhaps already cared about deeply; a person that perhaps was already more important to her than she wanted to admit.
