Chapter 359: Chapter 373: Proposal Gift (7)

In order to avoid freezing, Isabel Smith took off her high heels and stepped on the ground, hopping continuously. Then, she called Percy Stanton periodically, but in the end, his phone was turned off.

...

Percy Stanton had no idea how far he had driven, until his emotions gradually calmed down and his speed slowly decreased. He picked up his mobile phone, intending to check the time, only to find that his phone had turned off automatically.

Percy grabbed a car charger and charged his phone for about 10 minutes. When it finally turned on, he glanced at the screen and saw that it was already 1 o’clock in the morning, with 34 missed calls on it.

Percy clicked on it and noticed a series of records in red marked "Isabel." His heart shuddered as he remembered that he and Isabel had agreed to meet after the banquet.

He checked the last call, which was at 12 o’clock. It was already an hour later, and he feared she had gone home.

Percy casually tossed his phone onto the passenger seat, parked the car slowly at the roadside, and stared at the quiet Bellshire City outside the window with a somewhat absentminded gaze.

After a while, Percy raised his hand and touched his pocket, taking out the ring he had prepared earlier. He stared at the box for a long time, hesitating in his heart whether to treat what Evelyn Osbert had told him as a joke and propose to Isabel immediately, or to make a call and have someone check if Isabel had really been pregnant.

As Percy was indecisive, his phone suddenly rang. He gently put the ring back in his pocket and picked up the phone to answer it.

"Mr. Stanton, may I ask if you are coming to the tea shop tonight?"

Percy’s gaze flickered before he said, "No need, you can go home after work."

After hanging up the phone, Percy hesitated for two seconds before taking out his phone and making a call to Joseph Tucker.

The phone rang just twice before it was answered, and Percy could faintly hear raucous music at the other end.

"What’s up?"

"I will send you the name of a hospital in Seattle, United States. Check if Isabel Smith has any medical records there," Percy said, his voice turning dry. It took him a while to continue, "Mainly check the gynecology and obstetrics department... see if she has been pregnant before..."

...

Six years ago, when Isabel disappeared without a reason, he never investigated her whereabouts.

He thought it was her privacy. To love someone meant to respect their privacy.

All he did was wait for her to come back quietly and patiently.

But six years later, he had stooped so low as to peek into her privacy and past.

A sense of indescribable regret rose in Percy’s heart.

In fact, he knew what it meant to look into her past...

It meant that if Isabel had really been pregnant, he would have no chance to deceive himself any longer.

He could no longer fool himself into believing that Isabel had feelings for him six years ago.

When the truth was finally revealed, what would he do in the worst-case scenario?

Percy slowly closed his eyes, feeling a heavy pain in his heart. After an unknown amount of time, a buzzing vibration sounded in his ears. He picked up the phone, opened his eyes to look at the screen, and his face turned somewhat pale. He hesitated for a moment before answering the call, but remained silent.

"Percy, you finally answered the phone. Where are you now... Ahchoo!" As Isabel spoke, she sneezed heavily and then continued, "I’m so cold..."

Her voice, carrying a tremble and a touch of playfulness through the phone, was like that of a young girl teasing her lover.

If it had been before, Percy would have been overjoyed to hear Isabel speak to him like this, but now, he felt as if a blunt knife was cutting at his heart.
