Chapter 310: Chapter 322: Encounter at the Horse Racing Ground (25)

After making her outburst, she finally turned her head towards Charlotte Green and said, "Charlotte, what did you just say? I didn’t quite catch it. Why don’t you go upstairs first, and once dinner is done, we can talk?"

Charlotte’s composure seemed to falter slightly, she forced a smile, said nothing, and proceeded to ascend the stairs straight away.

Elijah Smith, however, seemed completely unaware of Charlotte’s unusual response; he remained in the kitchen, watching as the servants prepared dinner.

...

After finishing dinner at the Smiths, Isabel Smith rested for about half an hour, took the medication from the hospital, and then got ready to leave.

Elijah Smith, who had been sitting next to Isabel throughout the meal without saying a word, suddenly stood up and said, "Let me drive you home."

Charlotte Green, who had been sharing a peeled tangerine with Mrs. Smith, looked surprised when she heard this sudden offer from Elijah. She couldn’t help but look up, glancing in his direction.

Elijah first went to the coat hanger, handing Isabel’s coat over to her, then he took her bag and started leaving the villa.

Isabel changed her shoes at the entrance hall, said goodbye to Mrs. Smith, and exited the villa.

Elijah had already moved the Maserati out of the garage. He skillfully maneuvered the steering wheel, stopping the car right in front of Isabel. Then, he leaned over to open the passenger-side car door. Once Isabel got in and fastened her seatbelt, he started the car and gently drove out of the Smith estate.

Elijah asked for Isabel’s address, then activated the navigation system. He stayed completely focused on driving with his eyes fixed straight ahead.

The entire journey was mostly silent. However, Elijah occasionally stole glances at Isabel through the rearview mirror.

The third time he did this, Isabel accidentally caught his gaze in the mirror. After that, she pretended to not notice, lazily resting against her seat. Her eyes, though half-closed, remained vigilant on the rearview mirror. Unable to suppress her amusement after catching Elijah looking at her yet again, Isabel lightly chuckled under her breath.

Elijah, who was convinced his sneaky glances went unnoticed, was confused by Isabel’s laughter. He then turned his head and blatantly looked at Isabel for a few seconds.

Isabel suppressed her laughter and turned to face Elijah. She blinked her bright, large eyes and asked, "Do you have classes tomorrow?"

"Yes," Elijah replied. Sensing that his answer was too curt, he added, "No classes in the afternoon."

Isabel’s smile grew even wider, she moved lazily, gazing out at the dazzling night lights outside the window, and teasingly asked, "Elijah Smith, I heard from Benjamin, the butler, that you started attending classes regularly the day after I got injured."

Elijah, who was trying to swallow, suddenly choked as he heard Isabel’s words. He coughed violently for quite some time before finally managing to recover.

Isabel, while resting against the car seat, looked at Elijah who had regained his normally cool composure and then, at her leisure, spoke, "Elijah Smith, surely you’re not attending classes regularly because of me?"

This trifling revelation was enough to turn Elijah’s fair face a deep shade of red. He gripped the steering wheel tightly and contorting his face awkwardly, defensively answered, "I’m just broke, and those entertainment venues won’t let me in. I’m too bored, so I can only kill time by sitting in class."

Listening to Elijah’s equivocal words, a warmth seeped into Isabel’s heart. Yet, a tinge of disappointment surfaced on her face and she responded with a faint "Oh."

Elijah, thinking that Isabel was upset, froze for a moment. Anxiety filled his eyes as he glanced at Isabel through the rearview mirror again.
