The day that Isabel Smith was discharged, she had dinner at the Smith Family Homestead. Prior to this, she had texted her brother, Elijah Smith. Every sentence Elijah Smith said started with "Isabel Smith", which made Evelyn Osbert frown involuntarily.

Evelyn Osbert feigned ignorance, "Elijah, what are you doing?"

Without concealing anything, Elijah Smith replied, "Isabel is being discharged from the hospital today. Grandma called and told her to have dinner at home. I’m making sure they’re preparing dinner now."

"How lucky Sister Isabel is to have a brother like you," Evelyn replied.

Having greeted Evelyn Osbert, Elijah Smith immediately turned back and continued his command, "Isabel Smith likes crispy bamboo shoots. Be careful not to overcook them!"

Watching the servants take the bamboo shoots off at the right time, Elijah Smith then turned back to Evelyn Osbert, "Charlotte, what did you just say?"

In the past, Elijah Smith would always listen fully to whatever Evelyn Osbert said before doing anything else. Now, he not only ignored what she said while busy instructing about Isabel Smith’s dinner, but was also overly concerned about the doneness of a bamboo shoot dish.
