Chapter 308: Chapter 320: Encounter at the Horse Racing Ground (22)
Elijah Smith put on his robe, got out of bed, and walked onto the bedroom terrace.
The night outside the window was exceptionally beautiful, with a few twinkling stars scattered across the sky, but his mood was becoming increasingly heavy.
In fact, he had been sleeping soundly, but suddenly saw Isabel Smith covered in blood, and then he woke up.
Elijah stood for a while, feeling a dry mouth, went back to the bedroom, picked up a cigarette, lit it, took two puffs, but still felt empty in his heart. After school, he went to the hospital but didn’t have the courage to visit Isabel’s infirmary. Instead, he circled around the hospital twice and returned to the Smith Family home.
Elijah finished his cigarette on the terrace, then turned around, went back to the bedroom, lay on the bed, picked up his mobile phone, and typed back and forth for quite some time. Finally, he edited a text message and sent it to Isabel Smith.
...
The next day, Isabel woke up naturally and opened her eyes.
She was still cuddled up in Percy Stanton’s arms, Percy had already woken up and was answering a phone call from Smith Corporation. Most of the time, he was just listening to the call, not speaking, only replying briefly and quietly when absolutely necessary.
His attention was always on Isabel. Suddenly, he saw her open her eyes, and Percy frowned. He briefly spoke into the phone, hung up, and then whispered in Isabel’s ear, "Did I wake you up?"
Isabel, having slept well, felt somewhat refreshed and shook her head at Percy, and asked, "What time is it?" She took her phone from one side, checked the time on the screen lock, discovered several missed calls from Secretary Emille, and was about to return them when Percy spoke up, saying, "There’s no need to call back. I’ve already taken care of those matters."
Isabel looked up at Percy - could it be that he had been low-key handling those issues on the phone just now?
Then, she clicked on the unread messages. Two of them were advertisements, one was a weather forecast, and the last one was from Elijah Smith. She opened it, and it read: "Are you okay?"
These four simple words made Isabel feel much more relaxed. She withdrew her other hand from Percy’s embrace, held her mobile phone, and texted Elijah back, "The chicken soup was good."
Elijah Smith was in the middle of class when his phone suddenly vibrated. He quickly picked it up, clicked on it, and saw Isabel’s reply. The anxiety he felt was finally relieved, and he bit his pen, thinking for a moment, before replying to Isabel’s message.
...
The relationship between Isabel Smith and Percy Stanton improved considerably after the accident.
Percy spent most of his time in the hospital, accompanying Isabel. Some urgent tasks from Smith Corporation were resolved over the phone, and if it couldn’t be solved on the phone, Secretary Emille would bring some documents to the hospital for Isabel to approve every two days.
When they said it was Isabel’s approval, it was usually Percy who read it and signed on behalf of Isabel.
In the first week, Isabel could only lie in the bed, passing the time by playing with her mobile phone. However, after Elijah texted her, the siblings maintained a daily, uninterrupted stream of text messages even though they hadn’t seen face-to-face.
In fact, Isabel and Elijah didn’t deliberately discuss specific topics; they just chatted casually. Most of the conversations were quite boring, such as, "What did you eat? How is your body feeling today? What are you doing now? Did you attend classes properly?"
Mrs. Smith would visit the hospital every day, and as the number of visits increased, the exchange of words between her and Isabel increased, mostly about Smith Corporation’s work.
