Chapter 307: Chapter 319: Chance Encounter at the Horse Ranch (21)
His eyes flickered for a while before he spoke softly, seductively, "You don’t have to be alone. As long as you’re willing, you have me..."
Isabel didn’t speak anymore, as if she had been genuinely comforted by his words. She snuggled into Percy’s arms, calm and docile.
Percy’s hand continued to gently stroke Isabel’s back. In this comfortable sensation, her breathing gradually became steady, and later grew longer, as if she had fallen asleep.
Only then did Percy slowly stop stroking her back, holding her as he stared at the ceiling with wide-open eyes, no longer sleepy.
After an unknown period of time, Isabel’s voice suddenly broke the silence, "Percy, are you asleep?"
Percy slightly turned his head, looking at Isabel’s tearful and red eyes under the dim yellow light of the room. His eyes stung, and he couldn’t help but avert his gaze. He moved his lips and said, "No."
Isabel didn’t speak, just slightly moving her head to find a comfortable position in Percy’s arm. She lay on her side, gazing at his handsome profile. Her breath touched his ear, ticklish and warm, making his heartbeat accelerate, and his body suddenly stiffened. After a while, he turned to face Isabel and asked bluntly, "What’s wrong?"
Isabel’s tear-drenched eyelashes fluttered, and she finally spoke, "Were you telling the truth just now?"
Percy hesitated for a moment.
Isabel continued, "You said that as long as I’m willing, I still have you. Is that true?"
"Yeah." Percy softly replied, paused, cleared his throat, and said, "It’s true."
Isabel’s gaze softened, and the corner of her lips curved in a slight smile.
Isabel genuinely wished for someone to be there for her.
Actually, she wished that person to always be by her side was Marion Hancock, not Percy.
Perhaps after being alone for so long, encountering someone like Percy who treated her so kindly made it hard for her to let go.
Many times, it’s just like this.
You have someone by your side, but they are never the one you truly want.
She knew she was selfish, keeping a man she couldn’t forget in her heart, yet still giving a chance to another man who had an interest in her.
But she didn’t want to keep fighting alone.
After all, she was just a woman, and she would get tired and upset too.
It had nothing to do with love; she just wanted to have someone to lean on in her most helpless moments, so she wouldn’t be alone.
After a while, Isabel spoke softly, "Percy, I don’t know how long you can be with me, but I’m truly grateful for you being here now."
"I’ll be with you for as long as you want me to be." Percy tightened his embrace and said, "If you want me for a while, I’ll be with you for a while. If you want me for a lifetime, I’ll give you a lifetime."
A sour feeling rose in Isabel’s throat, and she felt an added layer of guilt towards Percy. Her eyes moistened, and she slowly closed them, suppressing the emotions in her heart bit by bit. After a long time, she finally managed to say, "Percy, thank you!"
Percy didn’t say anything, just gently closed his eyes and snuggled her closer.
Isabel took in the light scent of Percy’s body and gradually felt at ease, eventually falling back into her dreams.
This sleep, however, was filled with sweet dreams and lasted the entire night.
...
Yesterday evening, Elijah Smith stood outside Isabel’s infirmary door for the entire night, never leaving. Today, after returning from school, he went to bed early but woke up abruptly from his sleep after only a few hours. He grabbed his mobile phone and checked the time, finding that it was just one o’clock in the early morning. Yet, he couldn’t fall back asleep, no matter how much he tried, lying there on the bed.
