Chapter 304: Chapter 316: Unexpected Encounter at the Horse Field (18)
Isabel’s lower body’s sticky discomfort had become fresh and comfortable, and her mood had improved along with it. She lay in the hospital bed, embracing the quilt, and watched Percy Stanton carry the basin of water he had used to clean her body to the restroom and come back out.
It was only after Percy had tidied everything up that he realized Isabel had been watching him the whole time. Furrowing his brow, he walked over to her and asked with a touch of concern, "Is something bothering you?"
Isabel shook her head and sank further into the quilt.
Percy raised his hand to pull the curtain closed, blocking the bright light from outside the window, then turned back to Isabel and said softly, "Rest a bit."
His voice was gentle, with a hint of a coaxing tone, causing Isabel to feel slightly intoxicated as she nodded and obediently closed her eyes.
Sometimes, humans really are strange creatures. Even though you know that the person in front of you has ulterior motives and harbors ill intentions, even though you want to distance yourself from them, you can’t resist the warmth they bring you in your most vulnerable moments. And, sometimes, you even become moved by and reliant on the warmth they provide.
Isabel felt utterly shameless. Percy had nearly confessed his feelings to her multiple times in the past, and she had done everything she could to avoid it, not wanting to break their initial arrangement. But now, finding herself being taken care of so meticulously by Percy, she didn’t feel any dislike in her heart, and even felt a trace of enjoyment.
...
Perhaps because of the intravenous drip, Isabel slept for quite a while. She was awakened once more in the afternoon, around four o’clock, by Mrs. Smith paying her a visit.
Mrs. Smith had brought many nutritional supplements with her. While Isabel was still asleep, she placed the supplements on the table next to her bed, then turned to Percy and said, "Mr. Stanton, thank you so much for taking care of Isabel."
Percy still wore the same shirt from yesterday but had washed his face and shaved his beard, so his face no longer looked as haggard. His eyes glanced at the nutritional supplements Mrs. Smith had brought before moving away and politely replying, "Chairman Smith, there’s no need for such courtesy. I’m just helping Isabel since she encountered danger and had no family to take care of her."
Percy’s words carried a superficial tone, but the irony embedded within them wasn’t lost on Mrs. Smith. Her expression shifted slightly, and after a moment, she offered an embarrassed smile before attempting to continue speaking to Percy. But at that moment, Isabel in the hospital bed blinked her eyes and woke up.
Mrs. Smith swallowed the words she had intended to say and looked at the awakened Isabel, asking, "Isabel, are you awake?"
Isabel turned her head, gazing blankly at Mrs. Smith for a moment before her eyes regained their clarity. She tugged at her lips and called out, "Grandma."
And then she fell silent.
In reality, Isabel was unsure of what else to say. From the nurse, she had learned that she had been on the brink of life and death last night, nearly disappearing from this world altogether, but the person who had stayed by her side the whole time was Percy.
None of her family members had shown up.
Mrs. Smith hadn’t always treated her this way, but the pregnancy had caused her image to plummet in her grandmother’s eyes when she was less than eighteen years old.
Isabel knew that for Mrs. Smith, the Smith Corporation that her grandfather had left behind was more important than anything else. The only reason Mrs. Smith had forgiven her now was because, for the time being, she could benefit the Smith Corporation.
Isabel understood all of this, and she had even thought she’d grown used to it over time. But when she truly faced danger and her own grandmother never appeared, she realized that she was still heartbroken by it.
