Chapter 285: Chapter 297: The Repeated Confessions (34)
"Charlotte, don’t move around, the doctor said you need to rest, lest the wound on your back tear open," Amelia said, unable to restrain her concern as Charlotte sat up.
"It’s okay, Mum." Charlotte smiled and replied to Amelia, then continued to look at Elijah gently, a warm smile on her face. "Elijah, were you scared today?"
Many times in the past, Charlotte had treated him with such warmth and affection.
When he drunkenly returned to the Smith house, it was Charlotte who cooked hangover soup for him and fed it to him.
When he was feverish and unconscious, it was Charlotte who called the doctor, took care of him, fed him medicine, and showed concern for him, her tone gentle and affectionate, just like now.
In the vast Smith estate, Grandma was busy with the Smith Corporation every day. Sebastian Smith and Amelia Osbert focused all their attention on Charlotte. He had no parents, and his only older sister had gone to the United States.
Living in such a large villa, he found himself surrounded by servants but living a pitiful, impoverished life.
He grew reckless, always getting into fights, and was disinterested in learning. Grandma was disappointed in him and never looked happy to see him.
So, Charlotte’s care for him was the only warmth he found in Smith’s large estate.
He had always felt that Charlotte was the best person in the world to him, so he never disobeyed her; he would buy anything Charlotte wanted.
He was such a poverty-stricken child who wanted to repay the kindness others showed him; he would even spare no money to do so.
But now, even though Charlotte still looked at him with concern in her eyes and spoke with the same tenderness and heartache, the warmth and feeling he once felt had vanished.
As he looked at Charlotte’s delicate face, all he could think of was Isabel’s haughty gaze and the slap she had given him.
Elijah suddenly felt uncomfortable, his throat dry. He swallowed several times before he managed to say, "I’m fine."
Only then did Charlotte release Elijah’s hand, looking at him and asking, "Elijah, is that child you brought home today really Mr. Stanton’s son?"
Elijah didn’t understand why Charlotte was suddenly curious about this question, and without speaking, he just nodded.
"Mr. Stanton has a son?"
"But Mr. Stanton is unmarried, isn’t he? How did he have a child?" Sebastian and Amelia couldn’t help but ask.
Charlotte didn’t speak, just lowered her eyes, hiding her emotions.
She guessed that the child must be the baby she had given Percy five years ago. She never expected that Percy would have raised him, and now the child had grown so much.
She had thought that he would be in a terrible state having a sudden child, but it seemed like Percy wasn’t doing so badly after all – he could even take his son horse riding in the suburbs when he wasn’t working.
Moreover, it seemed that he managed to keep both his work and parenting responsibilities in check without marrying and finding a stepmother for the child. His life seemed quite good, actually.
Charlotte couldn’t describe the feeling she had when she suddenly saw that spirited and energetic child today. Subconsciously, she wanted Percy to be doing terribly but also hoped he wasn’t doing that bad.
She could tell that Percy detested her, especially after the way he had treated her so violently at the horse field for the sake of Isabel. Now that she thought about it, apart from fear, she felt a bit sad too.
"Speaking of which, it reminds me of Isabel. She went to the United States and got pregnant back then. Why didn’t she bring the child back?" Amelia asked.
"Now, the child might be the same age as Mr. Stanton’s," Sebastian replied.
