Chapter 282: Chapter 294: The Repeated Confessions (31)
Percy Stanton had once seen Elijah Smith’s car, a limited edition Maserati from a few years prior. His memory was exceptional, so he quickly spotted Elijah’s car in the crowded parking lot, unlocked it from a distance, and rushed forward. He carefully opened the passenger door, gently placed Isabel Smith inside, his fingers trembling as he fastened her seatbelt. He then hurriedly closed the car door and got in himself.
As he tried to fasten his own seatbelt, his trembling fingertips made it impossible to plug the seatbelt into the slot. Finally, he gave up on the seatbelt, started the engine, and floored the gas pedal, speeding out of the parking lot in a cloud of dust.
Percy drove at an incredibly high speed, reacting quickly and skillfully avoiding the numerous pedestrians in the horse field’s yard as he smoothly maneuvered past them.
Once out of the horse field, the highway back to the city district was straight ahead. Percy pressed down on the gas pedal all the way, and even though the car he drove to the horse field today was a regular sedan, it was nowhere near as fast as Elijah’s Maserati. His driving skills were excellent, so the car sped ahead in no time.
Percy controlled the steering wheel with one hand and pulled out his mobile phone with the other. He tapped on the screen a few times before making a call to Joseph Tucker.
The call was quickly answered, with some noise on the other end.
Percy didn’t even bother to greet Joseph or ask him to find a quieter place to talk. He just spoke directly: "Brother-in-law, can you find out who drove the ambulance from Bellshire’s Silverlake District People’s Hospital to the Suburban Equestrian today? Call them and tell me the license plate number."
"What happened?" Joseph casually asked.
"She...is injured.." Percy took a deep breath, struggling to say the simple, four-word sentence.
Even now, he felt that this all seemed somewhat unbelievable, like a dream.
Just a short while ago, she had been so annoying, accidentally slipping in the restroom of the horse field and landing on him. Then, she panicked and let go of him as if he were something extremely disgusting and repulsive.
At that time, her breath was steady and enchanting, her eyes lively and bright.
But now, she sat quietly beside him in the passenger seat, her eyes closed, seemingly not even breathing.
Despite the extreme speed and warmth inside the car, he felt his body getting colder and colder, his heart like a taut string being pulled tight by two people at both ends, straining, as if it could snap at any moment!
In a moment, the arrogant and seemingly omnipotent heir to the Thompson Empire Group appeared helpless and flustered, as if all his calm and disciplined training had vanished in an instant.
As he held the phone and stared at the road ahead, he took a few disordered breaths before continuing, his voice filled with an anxiety he didn’t even recognize: "...In this world, apart from myself, she is now the most important person to me..."
"I waited for six years, just to find her...but we’re not together...if something happens to her, I..."
As Percy reached this point, he suddenly didn’t know how to continue.
His hand clutching the phone tightened, and after a long pause, he finally spoke softly, "Brother-in-law, block a road in the city for an ambulance to leave... I need to rendezvous with the ambulance as quickly as possible."
...
Less than 10 minutes after Percy hung up, Joseph called back, giving him the ambulance’s license plate number, the driver’s contact information, and even telling him that a road in Bellshire had indeed been blocked off for the ambulance to leave.
Percy didn’t say a word in response to Joseph, merely hung up the phone and kept pressing the gas pedal, accelerating rapidly. He knew he was going fast enough, but it still felt slow to him. No one knew how torturous each passing minute and second was for him at this very moment.
